Hong Kong: CHP is monitoring the variant of seasonal H3N2 virus (7/29/09)

In response to media enquiries on an overseas media report concerning the detection of variant of seasonal H3N2, a spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) today (July 29) said the H3N2 viruses recently isolated by CHP's Public Health Laboratory Centre showed similar genetic changes with the reported variant.

"Such antigenic drift is common and expected for influenza viruses," the spokesman said. Although overseas countries including Canada reported that the variant of seasonal H3N2 virus showed reduced response to antibodies generated by the current vaccine recommended by World Health Organisation for Northern Hemisphere, the spokesman said seasonal flu vaccination would still offer some protection.

"People at risk of influenza-related complications are recommended to receive the vaccine before the arrival of the peak of seasonal flu.

"The H3 variant is now circulating in Hong Kong and there is no evidence showing that the variant is more severe and resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu).

"No flu vaccine with the variant virus component has been manufactured in the world," he said.

The spokesman noted that CHP would closely liaise with overseas health authorities to monitor the latest development.

Hong Kong: Parainfluenza outbreak in child care centre under close watch (7/29/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (July 29) urged members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against influenza-like illness (ILI) by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following CHP's investigation into a report of parainfluenza outbreak in a child care centre, affecting a total of 18 children. The centre concerned is SKH St. Thomas' Child Care Centre in Shek Kip Mei, which had been closed earlier to avoid the spread of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the centre.

Yet, the centre still provided day care service to around 60 children who are in need. The affected comprised 12 males and six females, aged between five months and three years. They developed symptoms of ILI, including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat between July 14 and 28. Among them, five were admitted to hospital in stable condition. Another 12 children sought medical treatment from private doctors and did not require hospitalisation.

The nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) specimen taken from a hospitalised case was tested positive to parainfluenza virus. A CHP spokesman said, ''In view of an increased number of sick children, CHP advised the centre to reinforce infection control measures. CHP officials have conducted field visits to the centre and provided health advice to the staff. To prevent respiratory tract infection, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:

  • Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
  • Maintain good personal hygiene, wash hands after sneezing or coughing, and wear a mask when having symptoms of respiratory tract infection;
  • Maintain good ventilation; and
  • Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation.

Hong Kong: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine to be introduced in Hong Kong's Childhood Immunisation Programme starting September 1, 2009 (7/30/09)

Speaking at a press conference today (July 30), the Controller of the Centre for Health Protection(CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Dr Thomas Tsang, said Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) would be introduced in DH's updated Childhood Immunisation Programme (CIP) starting September 1, 2009.

Under the updated CIP, all infants born on or after July 1, 2009 are eligible to receive free PCV vaccinations at the Department's Maternal and Child Health Centres (MCHC) during scheduled CIP visits. An estimated 70 000 newborns will be covered annually. When the baby reaches two months old, he/she will receive the first dose of pneumococcal vaccine. In addition, a one-off catch-up PCV vaccination will be provided free for eligible children born between September 1, 2007 and June 30 this year inclusive at MCHC.

Explaining the PCV vaccination arrangement, Dr Tsang said, "If your child was born on or after September 1, 2007, check if he/she has a scheduled MCHC vaccination visit for other vaccines between this September and November.If yes, your child will get the catch-up vaccination during the scheduled visit at MCHC and there is no need to book a separate visit.

"If your child does not have a scheduled MCHC visit between this September and November, please come to your MCHC in person to obtain an advanced vaccination appointment.

Booking for appointment slots will start on August 3 at all MCHCs during Mondays to Fridays, and the vaccination visit itself will take place on Sundays, the first one being September 6."

Parents/carers are reminded to bring the child's Hong Kong Birth Certificate or other valid identity documents showing his/her resident status as well as all immunisation records to obtain an appointment. It is not necessary to bring the child along to MCHC to get an appointment. A total of 29 MCHC will be opened on Sundays starting from September 6.

They will be manned by Auxiliary Medical Service nurse supervisors and trained vaccinators.

Cheung Chau and Mui Wo MCHCs will not open on Sundays. Parents of children who have registered with these MCHCs may call the respective MCHC for vaccination arrangement during the session time. A telephone line (2125 2125) has been set up to handle public enquiries, which will operate Monday through Friday from 9am to 5.30pm. Latest information on the updated CIP can be obtained from the Department's Family Health Service website (http://www.fhs.gov.hk) and the CHP website (http://www.chp.gov.hk).

Hong Kong: A case of invasive Haemophilus influenzae under investigation (7/30/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a case of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection and urged the public to be vigilant against the disease.

A spokesman for the CHP said today (July 30) the case affected a two-year-old girl who has underlying congenital problems and has been staying in Caritas Medical Centre since October 2007. She developed fever and tachycardia on July 23. Her blood culture grew Hib. She is now in stable condition. The spokesman noted that Hib is a bacteria which may cause meningitis and other infections in children, including pneumonia, epiglottis and septicemia.

"Hib infections usually occur in children aged below five years. The risk of disease among older children is relatively low," he said.

To prevent infection, members of the public are advised to adopt the following measures:

  1. observe personal hygiene;
  2. keep hands clean and wash hands properly;
  3. wash hands when they are dirtied by respiratory secretions e.g. after sneezing;
  4. cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose nasal and mouth discharge properly;

Hong Kong: Case of necrotising fasciitis under investigation (7/30/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (July 30) received a report of a necrotising fasciitis case (flesh-eating disease) involving a 87-year-old man.

The patient lived in Ma On Shan. He presented with right calf swelling and fever on July 27 and was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital on July 28. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and he passed away yesterday.

Laboratory tests on the tissues from his right ankle yielded Vibrio vulnificus, a type of bacteria causing necrotising fasciitis.

A CHP spokesman said necrotising fasciitis was a serious bacterial infection of the soft tissue and fascia. It could destroy tissue and cause death within 12 to 24 hours after infection.

People are reminded to adopt the following preventive measures:

  • Avoid exposure of open wounds or broken skin to seawater or salty water;
  • Wounds should be thoroughly cleansed and properly covered;
  • Wear thick rubber gloves when handling raw shellfish.

Patients should seek medical advice promptly if they developed symptoms and signs of infection like increasing redness, pain and swelling.

The Department of Health today (July 31) advised Ng Wah Catholic Secondary School to suspend summer classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1).

The advice was made following the report of 17 Form IV students, four Form II students and a staff who developed influenza like illness symptoms since July 24.

Their ages range between 14 and 54. All of them are in stable condition and no hospitalisation is required. Among them, two Form IV students were confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza. The department advised the school to suspend summer classes and to carry out thorough disinfection. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

The department provided health advice to the school and put the students of the summer class concerned under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
