Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

As at noon today (July 14), 12 COVID-19 confirmed patients (case numbers: 1153, 1168, 1202, 1209, 1210, 1214, 1215, 1233, 1239, 1250, 1251 and 1252) were discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. So far, a total of 1,229 patients with confirmed or probable infection have been discharged.

At present, there are 632 negative pressure rooms in public hospitals with 1,174 negative pressure beds activated. A total of 278 confirmed patients are currently hospitalised in 12 hospitals, among which six patients are in critical condition (case numbers: 595, 1315, 1338, 1350, 1401 and 1450), eight are in serious condition (case numbers: 1269, 1322, 1346, 1428, 1439, 1443, 1463 and 1472) and the remaining 264 patients are in stable condition.

CHP investigates 48 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has announced that as of 4pm today (July 14), the CHP was investigating 48 additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), taking the number of cases to 1 570 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 1 569 confirmed cases and one probable case).

The newly reported cases announced today involve 27 males and 21 females aged between 6 and 90 years. Among them, eight had travel history during the incubation period.

In light of the local cases announced today, the CHP will distribute deep throat saliva specimen bottles to residents of buildings where the patients live, as well as to those with whom they might have had contact during the infectious period. People are also urged to seek medical attention early if symptoms develop.

The CHP's epidemiological investigations and relevant contact tracing on the confirmed cases are ongoing. For case details and contact tracing information, please see the Annex.

The CHP again urged members of the public to maintain an appropriate social distance with other people as far as possible in their daily lives to minimise the risk of infection. In particular, they should go out less and avoid social activities such as meal gatherings or other gatherings to reduce the chance of contacting infected persons who may not present any symptoms, and minimise the risk of outbreak clusters emerging in the community.

As at noon today (July 15), 12 COVID-19 confirmed patients (case numbers: 1127, 1207, 1238, 1242, 1245, 1246, 1259, 1261, 1273, 1277, 1379 and 1380) were discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. So far, a total of 1,241 patients with confirmed or probable infection have been discharged.

At present, there are 639 negative pressure rooms in public hospitals with 1,186 negative pressure beds activated. A total of 314 confirmed patients are currently hospitalised in 13 hospitals, among which seven patients are in critical condition (case numbers: 595, 1315, 1338, 1346, 1401, 1428 and 1450), nine are in serious condition (case numbers: 1269, 1322, 1365, 1439, 1443, 1463, 1470, 1472 and 1562) and the remaining 298 patients are in stable condition. In view of the latest COVID-19 situation and expert views, admission screening in public hospitals will be further extended today to cover particular high-risk groups, such as residents living in Tsz Wan Shan, workers of food premises and taxi drivers. Screening for inpatients will also be enhanced. Besides patients with influenza and pneumonia symptoms, patients with new loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath, and gastrointestinal symptoms during their stay in hospitals will be arranged for COVID-19 testing.

However, as there are recently a large number of confirmed cases, the relevant testing capacity remained limited even though the DH has earlier procured testing services directly from local private laboratories to enhance public testing capacity. Hence, the CHP will, based on risk assessment, accord priority to people with higher risk (for example, those who live in buildings with more than one unit with confirmed cases of unknown source) when distributing specimen bottles for testing. People are also urged to seek medical attention early even if mild symptoms develop to help prevent the spread of the disease in the community.

In view of the severe epidemic situation, the CHP called on members of the public to avoid going out, having social contact and dining out. They should put on a surgical mask and maintain stringent hand hygiene when they need to go out. As a number of recent cases involve elderly people, the CHP strongly urged the elderly to stay home as far as possible and avoid going out. They should consider asking their family and friends to help with every day tasks such as shopping for basic necessities.

Senior technical officer of Housing Department tests positive for COVID-19

The Housing Department today (July 16) learnt that a senior technical officer has tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The officer works on the seventh floor of Block 3 at the Hong Kong Housing Authority Headquarters in Ho Man Tin. The floor concerned is not a public floor and is not open to the public. He last performed duties on July 13. Since his family member was identified as a close contact of a confirmed case, he was tested for COVID-19 in a private clinic on his own accord and preliminarily tested positive for the disease, and he was then admitted to hospital. CHP investigates 67 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) has announced that as of 4pm today (July 16), the CHP was investigating 67 additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), taking the number of cases to 1 656 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 1 655 confirmed cases and one probable case).

The newly reported cases announced today involve 34 males and 33 females aged between four and 94 years. Among them, four had travel history during the incubation period.

In view of an upsurge of confirmed cases in Hong Kong recently and the tight capacity of quarantine centres, the DH has reviewed the quarantine facilities and available capacity. After risk assessment, the DH considered that a certain number of units in quarantine centres must be reserved for quarantining of close contacts of confirmed patients as priority in view of their higher risk of infection. For Hong Kong residents returning from places with high risk of COVID-19 (including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and South Africa) via the Hong Kong International Airport, after excluding confirmed patients and their close contacts on arrival, the rest of them with negative test results are of relatively lower risk of infection. Hence, starting today (July 16), if the capacity of quarantine centres is saturated, the DH might arrange to send this group of people, who need to be quarantined but are of relatively lower risk, to undergo quarantine in hotel rooms rented by the Government when circumstances warrant.

The DH will assess the capacity of quarantine centres every day. The above arrangement will be implemented if the number of returnees from the above high-risk areas exceeds the capacity of quarantine centres available for use that day as these quarantine centres must be reserved for close contacts of confirmed patients as priority.

Upon arrival, these returnees will first have to collect their deep throat saliva samples at the DH's Temporary Specimen Collection Centre at AsiaWorld-Expo. If the test result is negative, they will be transferred in coaches to hotel rooms to complete their 14-day compulsory quarantine. If the test result is positive, they will be sent to hospitals for treatment while their close contacts will be sent to quarantine centres.

The DH will issue quarantine orders to these returnees in accordance with the Compulsory Quarantine of Persons Arriving at Hong Kong from Foreign Places Regulation (Cap. 599E). The relevant government department will also arrange electronic wristbands for them. According to quarantine orders, they shall neither leave their hotel rooms nor move around in the hotel during the entire quarantine period. Leaving designated rooms will be regarded as a breach of the quarantine order and constitutes a criminal offence. Offenders are subject to a maximum imprisonment for six months and fine of $25,000.

The DH will closely monitor the situation locally and overseas, and will adjust the arrangement in a timely manner if necessary.

The community spread of Covid-19 continued in Hong Kong on Friday as the city recorded 58 confirmed infections, with a potential new cluster emerging in another elderly care centre, health authorities revealed, while a 71-year-old patient who tested positive died in the afternoon.

At least 12 more cases emerged from clusters in Tsz Wan Shan, including staff working in restaurants at a shopping mall, and some stall owners at a market. Some family members of those infected earlier contracted the virus as well.

The latest cases – 50 local infections and eight imported ones – pushed the city’s tally to 1,713. The latest death is the city’s 11th fatality...

Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at noon today (July 17), 10 COVID-19 confirmed patients (case numbers: 1212, 1213, 1281, 1284, 1303, 1327, 1378, 1384, 1415 and 1460) were discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. So far, a total of 1,264 patients with confirmed or probable infection have been discharged.

At present, there are 650 negative pressure rooms in public hospitals with 1,207 negative pressure beds activated. A total of 375 confirmed patients are currently hospitalised in 14 hospitals, among which eight patients are in critical condition (case numbers: 595, 1315, 1338, 1346, 1401, 1428, 1562 and 1640), 11 are in serious condition (case numbers: 1269, 1322, 1348, 1365, 1424, 1439, 1443, 1449, 1470, 1485 and 1557) and the remaining 356 patients are in stable condition.

A 71-year-old female patient (case number: 1707) passed away this afternoon. Including this case, 11 COVID-19 patients have passed away in public hospitals so far.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

Government's COVID-19 testing services are not for private use

A Government spokesman said today (July 17) that the objective of the Government in providing COVID-19 testing services free-of-charge is to encourage members of the public with symptoms to take the test as early as possible. Through early detection and diagnosis of infected persons in the community, coupled with community surveillance for COVID-19, we strive to break the chain of infection as early as possible in order to safeguard public health. The COVID-19 testing services currently provided free-of-charge by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority cover patients attending the Accident and Emergency Departments of public hospitals, General Out-patient Clinics, public hospitals and private clinics. The Government also arranged testing through private organisations for persons in high-risk and high-exposure groups.

"The Government is committed to enhancing the COVID-19 testing capacity in the public sector. Testing for around 13 000 specimens was completed yesterday (July 16) alone, and the community surveillance arrangement for high-risk and high-exposure groups has already commenced in stages. If a sample tests positive, the Government will notify the person concerned as early as possible and arrange for admission to a public hospital for treatment. If the test result is negative, no certificate of negative result will be given to the person concerned. Likewise, private organisations that carry out community surveillance will not issue certificate of negative result to the person concerned for general or specific purposes," the spokesman said.

The spokesman stressed that if members of the public need to take a COVID-19 test for personal reasons in order to obtain a relevant test result for private use, including immigration purposes, they should arrange testing services on their own. Persons who wish to enter Guangdong should arrange a COVID-19 test with testing institutions recognised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, as listed in the Annex.

The spokesman reiterated that given the severe situation of the epidemic, members of the public should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene as well as an appropriate social distance with other people as far as possible in their daily lives. Members of the public are advised to seek medical advice promptly when feeling unwell. If suspected of being infected, they should proactively make a request to a doctor for testing with a view to achieving early identification, early isolation and early treatment.

QEH announces passing away of COVID-19 patient

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) today (July 18) announced that a 94-year-old male COVID-19 confirmed patient (case number: 1365) passed away at 10.08am today.

The patient with chronic disease was admitted to QEH Accident and Emergency Department on July 9 due to fever and cough. He was confirmed positive of COVID-19 and transferred to isolation ward for treatment. His condition had deteriorated on July 13. The hospital had communicated with the family about the patient's condition. The patient's family agreed to have Do-Not-Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) if the patient condition further deteriorated. The hospital provided oxygen as supportive treatment to patient. The patient eventually succumbed on today morning.

The hospital was saddened about the passing away of the patient and would offer necessary assistance to his family members.

Including the above case, 12 COVID-19 patients have passed away in public hospitals so far.

Customs Officer preliminarily tests positive for COVID-19

The Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) today (July 18) learned that a Customs Officer has preliminarily tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The officer works on 23/F of the Customs Headquarters Building in North Point. The floor is not a public floor and is not open to the public.

The officer is responsible for logistic duties. He last performed his duties this Thursday (July 16) and felt unwell yesterday (July 17) morning. After seeking medical treatment at a private clinic, he was notified last night to have preliminarily tested positive for COVID-19. Isolation treatment in hospital is being arranged for the officer.

The officer has no recent travel history. He has been wearing surgical masks when performing duties and has properly maintained social distancing with people he has had contact with. His body temperature was normal when undergoing temperature screening during work.

The department has been closely co-operating with the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) on the CHP's epidemiological investigations. The colleagues working with the officer are asymptomatic. Customs has liaised with the CHP for arranging those officers to undergo COVID-19 testing. The concerned floor has also been arranged to undergo a thorough cleaning and sterilisation.

C&ED is highly concerned about the epidemic of COVID-19 and has remained highly vigilant since the epidemic broke out. Relevant hygienic measures for infectious diseases provided by the CHP have been strictly adopted. All officers have their body temperatures checked before performing their duties. They are also required to wear proper personal protective equipment.

The department has stepped up the cleaning and sterilising measures for all working locations and will remind all officers to strictly comply with the hygienic measures of infectious diseases provided by the CHP. The officers will also be reminded to consult a doctor promptly if they have any discomforting symptoms.

CHP investigates 64 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) has announced that as of 4pm today (July 18), the CHP was investigating 64 additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), taking the number of cases to 1 778 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 1 777 confirmed cases and one probable case).

The newly reported cases announced today involve 23 males and 41 females aged between 16 and 86 years. Among them, four had travel history during the incubation period.

As for the local cases, the CHP will distribute deep throat saliva specimen bottles to residents of buildings where the patients live, as well as to those with whom they might have had contact during the infectious period. However, as there are recently a large number of confirmed cases, the relevant testing capacity remained limited even though the DH has earlier procured testing services directly from local private laboratories to enhance public testing capacity. Hence, the CHP will, based on risk assessment, accord priority to people with higher risk (for example, those who live in buildings with more than one unit with confirmed cases of unknown source) when distributing specimen bottles for testing. People are also urged to seek medical attention early even if mild symptoms develop to help prevent the spread of the disease in the community.

The CHP's epidemiological investigations and relevant contact tracing on the confirmed cases are ongoing. For case details and contact tracing information, please see the Annex.

In view of the severe epidemic situation, the CHP called on members of the public to avoid going out, having social contact and dining out. They should put on a surgical mask and maintain stringent hand hygiene when they need to go out. As a number of recent cases involve elderly people, the CHP strongly urged the elderly to stay home as far as possible and avoid going out. They should consider asking their family and friends to help with every day tasks such as shopping for basic necessities.

A spokesman for the CHP said, "Given that the situation of COVID-19 infection remains severe and that there is a continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.

"The CHP also strongly urges the public to maintain at all times strict personal and environmental hygiene, which is key to personal protection against infection and prevention of the spread of the disease in the community. On a personal level, members of the public should wear a surgical mask when having respiratory symptoms, taking public transport or staying in crowded places. They should also perform hand hygiene frequently, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

"As for household environmental hygiene, members of the public are advised to maintain drainage pipes properly, regularly pour water into drain outlets (U-traps) and cover all floor drain outlets when they are not in use. After using the toilet, they should put the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading germs."

To prevent pneumonia and respiratory tract infection, members of the public should always maintain good personal and environmental hygiene. They are advised to:

• Wear a surgical mask when taking public transport or staying in crowded places. It is important to wear a mask properly, including performing hand hygiene before wearing and after removing a mask;
• Perform hand hygiene frequently, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes, after touching public installations such as handrails or doorknobs, or when hands are contaminated by respiratory secretions after coughing or sneezing;
• Maintain drainage pipes properly and regularly (about once a week) pour about half a litre of water into each drain outlet (U-trap) to ensure environmental hygiene;
• Cover all floor drain outlets when they are not in use;
• After using the toilet, put the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading germs;
• Wash hands with liquid soap and water, and rub for at least 20 seconds. Then rinse with water and dry with a disposable paper towel. If hand washing facilities are not available, or when hands are not visibly soiled, performing hand hygiene with 70 to 80 per cent alcohol-based handrub is an effective alternative;
• Cover your mouth and nose with tissue paper when sneezing or coughing. Dispose of soiled tissues into a lidded rubbish bin, then wash hands thoroughly; and
• When having respiratory symptoms, wear a surgical mask, refrain from work or attending class at school, avoid going to crowded places and seek medical advice promptly.

One more outsourced worker of Water Supplies Department preliminarily tests positive for COVID-19

The Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (July 20) said that one more outsourced contractor's worker at the department's Pak Kong Water Treatment Works preliminarily tested positive for COVID-19, subsequent to the outsourced contractor's worker testing positive yesterday (July 19). There is no effect on drinking water safety.

The outsourced contractor's transportation worker last went to work yesterday. In light of an outsourced contractor's worker testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday, he was arranged to undergo virus testing. The WSD was notified in the early hours today that he preliminarily tested positive. He has been admitted to hospital under isolation. He is now in stable condition.

The outsourced contractor's worker wore a surgical mask at work. He underwent temperature screening at work and his body temperature was normal. The WSD thoroughly cleaned and disinfected Pak Kong Water Treatment Works yesterday. The department will maintain close liaison with the Centre for Health Protection. Staff have been reminded to pay attention to personal hygiene and to stay vigilant. They should seek medical advice immediately if feeling unwell.

The CHP stated that there were 73 new cases of coronavirus in 2019 in Hong Kong, seven of which were imported and 39 were related to other confirmed cases.



Zhang Zhujun, director of the Infectious Diseases Division of the Center for Protection, said at a briefing today that multiple confirmed cases were related to restaurants. Among the people who attended the birthday party of Fulin Restaurant in Tuen Mun Central Plaza on July 11, two more people were diagnosed, and there were also guests who came to the restaurant on the same day contracted the disease. The Protection Center has requested the restaurant to be thoroughly cleaned and arranged for employees to undergo testing.



In addition, at least six people who went to the restaurant of Metropark Mong Kok on different days for a meal were diagnosed. Zhang Zhujun said that because he was worried about the environmental pollution of the restaurant or the employees were sick, he had requested the restaurant to be cleaned and arranged for employees to be tested.



Three more people in the Kwai Fong Chao Ting gathering group contracted the disease, and some cases were related to Binji Congee and Noodles in Pingshi Village, the central point of Ciyun Mountain Center. The Tuen Mun Eye Centre and the table tennis group were each diagnosed by one more person.



As for the 27 unidentified cases, the patient included private doctor Chen Jiming of Causeway Bay Kindness Medical Centre. He had previously diagnosed a diagnosed patient. He also went to the Jiayi Nursing Center at Jupiter Street in North Point. The CHP will follow up The situation of the residents in the elderly center.



The other confirmed person was the caregiver of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Jian Yi Home. Last Friday, she was assigned to work at the Jockey Club Long Yat Ju who had a confirmed case earlier. Since she had been tested when she arrived at Long Yat Ju, and later found a diagnosis, the Protection Center will investigate her source of infection.



Other patients include the staff of Choi Hun Choi Dishwashing; the customers of Ciyun Mountain Center restaurant and Tsim Sha Tsui bar; the employees of the Sparrow House in Sham Shui Po; the cleaners of the **** Hom Municipal Building Gymnasium;



On the other hand, the Hospital Authority said that a family member of the Eastern Hospital who underwent caeitis surgery last week was diagnosed with 2019 coronavirus disease. The hospital arranged for the patient to be tested for viruses. The initial result was positive and the patient was transferred to the isolation ward.



Yu Huiling, Chief Administrative Manager (Medical Efficacy and Technology Management) of the Hospital Authority stated that medical staff wear appropriate protective equipment when contacting the patient, and ten patients in the same room have been listed as close contacts.



Yu Huiling also said that the HA has conducted tests for 170 staff and outsourced staff of the Tuen Mun Ophthalmology Center. All the results were negative. The center will maintain limited services in the coming weeks. The test results of staff and patients of the kidney dialysis center in the same building were also negative.



She said that in response to the epidemic, the HA is considering further reducing non-emergency services, and is discussing arranging some employees to work from home to reduce the risk of virus transmission.

CHP announces incident concerning mixing up of virus testing results

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) announced an incident concerning the mixing up of virus testing results and apologised for the two affected people.

The Public Health Laboratory Services Branch under the CHP yesterday (July 20) when following up on the test results of COVID-19 found that the results of two people had been mixed up, where the test report for the person who should have been tested negative had been inputted as positive, while the test report for the person who should have been tested positive has been delayed until yesterday.

The CHP has immediately contacted the two affected persons to explain and apologise for the incident, as well as carried out corresponding follow-up actions. The patient whose test result should be positive had already been sent to the North Lantau Hospital on July 19 as she was identified as a close contact of another confirmed case and had onset of symptoms. She was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment in isolation yesterday. Relevant tracing of close contacts will be carried out.

As for the person tested in fact negative, as she had stayed in the same negative pressure room with a confirmed patient for several hours after being admitted to the hospital for treatment, the CHP will arrange to send her to a quarantine centre for quarantine and follow up with further virus testing.

The CHP will carry out an investigation of the incident and review test workflow to prevent reoccurrence of similar incidents in future and ensure the integrity of test results.

Queen Mary Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital announce passing away of COVID-19 patients

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Hospital Authority today (July 21) announced that a 77-year-old male COVID-19 confirmed patient at Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) (case number: 1562) passed away at around 2am today. The patient with chronic diseases attended Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 14 due to fever. He was confirmed positive of COVID-19 and transferred to QMH's isolation ward for treatment. His condition deteriorated on July 16 and the patient was transferred to Adult Intensive Care Unit for treatment and oxygen support. The patient eventually succumbed today.

In addition, a 87-year-old male COVID-19 confirmed case of the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) (case number: 1348) passed away at around 2.50am early this morning. The patient, with chronic diseases, was admitted to PWH on July 9. He presented with fever and his condition was stable. He had been deteriorating subsequently and eventually succumbed this morning.

The hospitals were saddened about the passing away of the patients and would offer necessary assistance to family members.

Including the above two cases, 14 COVID-19 patients have passed away in public hospitals so far.

LCSD outsourced horticultural service contractor worker tests positive for COVID-19

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (July 21) said that an outsourced horticultural service contractor worker has tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The outsourced horticultural worker concerned worked at Fire Dragon Path Amenity Plot, Lau Sin Street Temporary Sitting-out Area, Lin Fa Kung Garden, Tin Hau Temple Garden and Wun Sha Street Children's Playground in Wan Chai District. She last performed duties on July 18. She felt unwell earlier and sought medical treatment, and was notified last night (July 20) that she had tested positive for COVID-19. She was admitted to hospital and has been treated under isolation. She is now in stable condition.

The horticultural worker concerned has no recent travel history. She wore surgical masks when performing duties, and her body temperature was normal when undergoing temperature screening during work.

The LCSD will arrange thorough cleaning and sterilisation at areas of Fire Dragon Path Amenity Plot, Lau Sin Street Temporary Sitting-out Area, Lin Fa Kung Garden, Tin Hau Temple Garden and Wun Sha Street Children's Playground as well as its facilities according to guidelines provided by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP).

The LCSD is highly concerned about the COVID-19 epidemic and will continue to maintain close liaison with the CHP. Staff are reminded to pay attention to personal hygiene and to stay vigilant. They should seek medical advice immediately if feeling unwell.

CSD responds on case involving lawyer who visited persons in custody preliminarily testing positive for COVID-19

The Correctional Services Department gave the following response today (July 21) on a case involving a lawyer who visited persons in custody preliminarily testing positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as covered by the media this morning:

According to the visit records, the lawyer conducted an official visit to two remand persons in custody in Stanley Prison on July 3 and 4 and one remand person in custody in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre on July 11.

In view of the development of COVID-19, the department has enhanced the prevention and disinfection measures for official visits since late March. They include:

1. Measuring the body temperature of official visitors;
2. Requiring official visitors to fill in a health declaration form;
3. Requiring official visitors and persons in custody to wear masks during visits;
4. Installing transparent plastic partitions in official visit rooms to prevent transmission of respiratory droplets between official visitors and persons in custody during visits; and
5. Adding two periods of cleaning and disinfection for official visit rooms in the morning and the afternoon, on top of the regular cleaning routine.

The persons in custody concerned are currently asymptomatic. The department immediately separated the persons in custody concerned and placed them under medical surveillance. Furthermore, the facilities concerned have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The department will closely liaise with the Centre for Health Protection and monitor the situation.

Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at noon today (July 21), 23 COVID-19 confirmed patients (case numbers: 1208, 1265, 1270, 1283, 1290, 1299, 1319, 1320, 1361, 1381, 1383, 1385, 1386, 1387, 1397, 1429, 1505, 1591, 1593, 1595, 1637, 1732 and 1734) were discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. The list of discharged patients released yesterday (July 20) mistakenly included a patient (case number: 1530) who had been discharged earlier. Upon verification, a total of 1,324 patients with confirmed or probable infections have been discharged so far.

At present, there are 650 negative pressure rooms in public hospitals with 1,207 negative pressure beds activated. A total of 609 confirmed patients are currently hospitalised in 14 hospitals, among which 29 patients are in critical condition (case numbers: 595, 1315, 1338, 1346, 1401, 1424, 1428, 1470, 1483, 1485, 1491, 1497, 1573, 1630, 1640, 1644, 1679, 1680, 1710, 1718, 1730, 1779, 1795, 1806, 1835, 1940, 1944, 1955 and 1956), 11 are in serious condition (case numbers: 1306, 1439, 1449, 1456, 1468, 1557, 1558, 1767, 1798, 1843 and 1934) and the remaining 569 patients are in stable condition.

The HA will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

Government clarifies rumours on "lockdown"

Regarding the rumour that the Government may impose a so-called "lockdown" in the coming few days in view of the COVID-19 outbreak, a Government spokesman today (July 21) clarified that the rumour is unfounded.

“In view of the severity of the epidemic situation, we should fight the disease together. Members of the public should not be misled by fake news, nor should they spread any rumour that can lead to unnecessary fear,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman urged members of the public to continue to comply with the guidelines on social distancing, go out less and maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene. The public should also stay alert to the Government's announcements on the latest news regarding COVID-19.

There were 61 new confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia in Hong Kong today, and there are still many local cases of unknown origin. Zhang Zhujun, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Center for Health Protection, said that most of the third wave of epidemics came from a single virus strain, and it is believed that the case was caused by taxi drivers and restaurants.

Updates on COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong East Cluster

The spokesperson for Hong Kong East Cluster made the following announcement today (July 21):

Following the announcement yesterday (July 20) about a preliminarily positive case of COVID-19 infection in a surgical ward, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) has continued to follow up on the 10 patients who had stayed in the same cubicle with the patient concerned. The COVID-19 test results were negative for all five patients who are still in the hospital. The patients concerned have been transferred to Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms (AIIRs) for isolation and surveillance.

The other five patients had been discharged earlier. One of them is a 41-year-old male patient who reported persistent fever after discharge and was immediately admitted yesterday to an AIIR for isolation. His nasopharyngeal swab specimen preliminarily tested positive for COVID-19. The hospital has reported the result to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) and will follow up closely with the CHP on the condition of the other discharged patients.

PYNEH has conducted thorough cleaning and disinfection in the ward concerned. All staff members and patients have been reminded to follow strengthened infection control measures and observe hand hygiene.

In addition, a 79-year-old female patient (case number: 1956) sought medical treatment in Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 19 and her test for COVID-19 was confirmed as positive yesterday. The patient was admitted to Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals (RTSKH) for colonoscopy on July 16 and was discharged on the same day.

Thorough cleaning and disinfection at the Combined Endoscopy Unit and a day ward (B6) was completed yesterday. The Infection Control Team of RTSKH is working closely with the CHP for close contact tracing. After assessment, no staff members has been classified as a close contact as all staff concerned were equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment. The hospital has communicated with 10 female patients who stayed in the same day ward with the infected patient on July 16, and eight of them require quarantine arrangements.

CHP investigates 61 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) has announced that as of 0.00am today (July 21), the CHP was investigating 61 additional confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), taking the number of cases to 2 019 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 2 018 confirmed cases and one probable case).

The newly reported cases announced today involve 27 males and 34 females aged between four and 84 years. Among them, three had travel history during the incubation period.

The CHP's epidemiological investigations and relevant contact tracing on the confirmed cases are ongoing. For case details and contact tracing information, please see the Annex or the list of buildings with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the past 14 days and the latest local situation of COVID-19 available on the website "COVID-19 Thematic Website" (www.coronavirus.gov.hk).

In view of the severe epidemic situation, the CHP called on members of the public to avoid going out, having social contact and dining out. They should put on a surgical mask and maintain stringent hand hygiene when they need to go out. As a number of recent cases involve elderly people, the CHP strongly urged the elderly to stay home as far as possible and avoid going out. They should consider asking their family and friends to help with every day tasks such as shopping for basic necessities.

A spokesman for the CHP said, "Given that the situation of COVID-19 infection remains severe and that there is a continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.

"The CHP also strongly urges the public to maintain at all times strict personal and environmental hygiene, which is key to personal protection against infection and prevention of the spread of the disease in the community.
