Honduras Confirms First Measles Case in Nearly Three Decades
Tegucigalpa, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The Honduran Ministry of Health (Sesal) confirmed today the first case of measles since the country was declared free of the disease in 1997.
May 21, 2026 | 7:53 PM

The head of the Sesal Health Surveillance Unit, Homer Mejía, reported that it is an imported case, a 40-year-old Honduran man from the northern department of Yoro, who is believed to have contracted the virus in Guatemala, where he had been for the past six months.

He tested positive in a laboratory test conducted yesterday and is currently stable and in isolation, Mejía stated.

According to the official, the patient presented symptoms such as fever, cough, conjunctivitis, joint pain, and a skin rash.

He indicated that the man entered the hospital wearing a mask, which helped to break the chain of transmission.

However, nine people who traveled with the Honduran man also remain in isolation and are asymptomatic, he explained...

Honduras Confirms Sixth Imported Case of Measles
June 23, 2026 - 3:45 PM

The Ministry of Health (Sesal) confirmed a new imported case of measles in Honduras this Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases detected in the country in 2026 to six.

Dr. Odalys García, head of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), reported that the case involves a 29-year-old Italian citizen who entered Honduran territory on June 13 by land from Guatemala.

According to the official, the patient was identified through the national epidemiological surveillance system after presenting symptoms consistent with the disease, including fever, cough, headache, runny nose, and subsequently the appearance of the characteristic rash.

Health authorities indicated that the case was confirmed through laboratory tests performed by specialized health teams.

The discovery triggered the corresponding epidemiological protocols for monitoring potential contacts and preventing further infections...
