H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

cartski

Advisory Board
Hi,

I've been asked to create a very brief summary of the resources currently devoted to H5N1 in terms of the percentage of a country's GDP, or percentage of the country's current national budget.

I believe I saw something like this for the US a while back, but much too detailed. Screen shots of the actual budget documents, I think.

I'm look for a small table: Country by % GDP devoted to any aspect related to H5N1.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

J.

Re: H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

Getting there....this is a table, but I don't know how to post it as such in this forum, from

http://www.fin.gc.ca/wp/2007-04e.html

on page 56. (once you get the free .pdf)

But note, for the US, also http://healthyamericans.org/reports/flurecession/FluRecession.pdf

which CIDRAP is quoting.

Re: H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

that's expected losses from a pandemic, I thought you meant
%of GDP spent for preparation

reformatting a bit...:

GDP: 1918-like, double as bad
Code:
U.S.       : -3.0, -5.5;
Canada     : -3.1, -5.7;
Japan      : -8.4,-15.8;
Europe     : -4.3, -8.0;
Singapore  :-11.2,-21.7;
Philippines:-19.3,-37.8;
LDCs       : -6.3,-12.2

almost linear to the number of expected deaths

Re: H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

You're right, gsgs, I got off topic.

The idea is to show how much countries are currently committing to preparing for a pandemic, in any manner. That info should buttress the argument "if other countries are taking the pandemic threat seriously (by committing large amount of $), we (smaller entities, sucha as companies) should too."

It would interesting, as another aside, to correlate current preparations, in terms of % GDP, with the expected impact.

Re: H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

Maplecroft has a country-list, somehow they should take that into
account, maybe they did such calculations.

Re: H5N1 Expenditures: Summary by Country

Not sure about Maplecroft. I only got risk maps from there.

WHO does have interestinng expenditure ratios on health:

This would be perfect, if it were narrowed to pandemic-related expenditures only.

There must be some think-tank that does these types of subject matter studies - $ devoted to heart attacks, breast cancer, diabetes, etc. I'll search PubMed.
