Re: महाराष्ट्र Swine flu toll in Maharashtra reaches 847

Civic body all set to tackle Swine Flu on a war footing

NAGPUR: With swine flu cases in the city going north in the past fortnight, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finally sprung into action.

Though the majority of the 36 H1N1 deaths in city are of patients from outside Nagpur who have come here for treatment, there has been a sudden rise in the number of suspected swine flu patients from all age groups including pregnant women. This has resulted in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and the NMC taking measures to tackle the disease from spreading.

Since the NMC does not have the ability and the infrastructure to handle swine flu patients who require tertiary care, it is planning to make more ventilators available to both GMCH as well as the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College ( IGGMC). However, since procuring ventilators will take at least three weeks, the NMC is promising to make them available in a day or two from distributors who would be supplying the machines later.

NMC is also starting two more swine flu screening centres, at Daji Hosiptal at Gandhibagh and Netaji Hospital at Golibar square, immediately. Additional municipal commissioner Vishnupad Bute told TOI that if needed, NMC will also start screening centres at ESIS Hospital, Central Railway and South-East Railway Hospital and CGHS Hospitals.

"Six NMC hospitals have already been screening and examining patients since the last few days with all the doctors and nursing staff being provided proper protection kits," said Bute.

Bute added that the NMC had sought permission from the state government to conduct swab tests at a private laboratory in the city. The state health department has already given such permissions to Nashik, Pune and Mumbai municipal corporations to conduct swab tests in their laboratories for faster detection of the disease.

Dr Rajendra Pradhan, the NMC deputy director of health, informed that the corporation is also asking another 4-5 private hospitals to treat swine flu patients. "That will happen only after the state government officials inspect these hospitals to check the infrastructure," he said.

Currently, Orange City Hospital and Research Institute, Wockhardt Hospital, Hope Hospital, Chandak hospital are treating the swine flu patients and now Care Hospital, Mure Memorial, Janta Hospital, Jaripatka and Radha Krishan hospital will be roped in.

H1N1 deaths down, but centre warns against taking it easy

Health officials in the city are patting themselves on the back for a good show after the decline in the number of H1N1 deaths in the city, but a report by the emergency medical relief section of the Directorate General of Health Services has pointed out that it isn't the time to relax yet.

According to the report based on data received from the Central Government, the state continues to be the epicentre of the swine flu epidemic with the city recording maximum number of deaths.

According to officials, of the 128 deaths that were reported across the country between August 30 and September 5, about 45 deaths were reported from the state which was the highest followed by Gujarat with 32 deaths.

"The disturbing trend is that the number of deaths overall across the country has increased. Even though positive cases and deaths are fewer within the city, those being affected on the outskirts and rural areas are increasing," said Dr S B Nadoni, senior regional director for health and family welfare for the Maharashtra, Goa and Daman and Diu regions.

According to official data, in the week between August 22 and 29, about 89 deaths had been reported as compared to more than 30 per cent rise in death count a week later.

"The number of positive cases has been dropping sharply and that's why maybe the guard has been lowered too. People think that vaccination cover is huge and that's why they are safe.

But this new report from central government is worrying. Even if we are better off than a few weeks ago, we are still far worse than the other states,"said a senior official from the city's swine flu control room.

Re: महाराष्ट्र Fatalities in Maharashtra 454 this wave, total 869

Re: महाराष्ट्र Fatalities in Maharashtra 454 this wave, total 869

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government decided to return 27 per cent of the swine flu vaccine stock provided by the Central government as the state health workers are reluctant to get vaccinated. With more than 2,000 registered swine flu cases since August, Maharashtra is one of India's worst-hit states.

"We have returned back about 7,300 doses to the Government of India. We are utilizing the remaining swine flu vaccine doses, says Directorate of Health Services Dr DS Dakhure.

The swine flu vaccine now in question is the injectable one, purchased from French Pharma giant, Sanofi Pasteur last on December for front-line health workers, who are most at risk of getting the disease. But some doctors in government hospitals refused to take the vaccine following fears of rare but serious side-effects like the Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Some people have refused to take the injection. So, we have taken it in written form from the health workers who refused to take vaccine, if they fall ill on work, it will purely be their responsibility, " added Dr Dakhure.

However, Maharashtra is not the only state to record low swine flu vaccinations. Delhi gearing up for the Commonwealth Games has till date not used more than 40 per cent of its vaccine stock. Both Punjab and Rajasthan also have around 40 per cent of unused swine flu vaccines.

The particular vaccine batch, procured at about Rs 45 crore of public money expires by the end of October. So it may just end up going waste.

The official number of cases of swine flu has seen a dip over the past few weeks, but the virus is still doing the rounds. So, the doctors continue to advise that people with weakened immune systems should get vaccinated.

Allow use of ward funds for vaccination drives: Corporators done/pooja Story by radhe

PUNE: After the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) decided not to carry out a compulsory H1N1 vaccination drive in the city, some corporators have demanded that the PMC should allow them to utilise ward level funds for free vaccination drives in schools.

Corporator Alka Khade has tabled a proposal before the standing committee saying that all corporators should be allowed to utilise Rs 2 lakh from their ward level funds to undertake vaccination drives in schools within the PMC limits.

Speaking during a recent debate on swine flu in the PMC general body meeting, municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade had said that corporators have continuously been demanding that the PMC undertake H1N1 vaccination programmes for citizens and hold awareness drives.

However, the PMC had made it clear that the Union government had not issued any directives in this regard and neither the PMC nor the state government would carry out a compulsory vaccination drive in the city.

"The PMC should permit corporators to use their funds for vaccination purpose in PMC and private schools," said Khade, supported by other corporators. The standing committee will decide on the proposal in the meeting on Tuesday.

The city recorded the nation's first H1N1 casualty on August 3, 2009, when 14-year-old schoolgirl Reida Shaikh died. The virus began to spread more once the monsoon set in this year, especially in the rural areas, taking the toll in the district to 404 people since August 2009. In the five-month period since April 2010, as many as 162 people have succumbed to the infection.

Zagade said that 7.23 lakh people were screened within the PMC limits since August 2009, while 1.45 lakh were given Tamiflu.

Last year, the PMC had advised all district collectors and zilla parishad executives in the state to curb the movement of people to the city during the Ganesh festival in view of the H1N1 flu. However, this year there have been no such restrictions on people's movement during the festival as the "H1N1 situation is stabilised and the isolation phase has passed" according to the PMC.

Swine flu death toll in city rises to 51
TNN, Sep 24, 2010, 05.02am IST

NAGPUR: With the deaths of three more H1N1 patients at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in this week, the swine flu toll in the city reached 51 on Thursday.

Of these, 35 deaths occurred in GMCH. But many of the deceased are from the neighbouring cities and states. The death toll within the city limits has reached 17.

The H1N1 virus however seems to be going harsh on pregnant women. It has taken the lives of nine such women till now. This week, eight-month pregnant Nanda K Ukey from Gondia died at GMCH on Wednesday while six-month pregnant Vinita Thakre, a 21-year-old woman from Betul died two days back. The third patient to die in this week was a two-year-old boy from Wanadongri Saksham Sakhre who died in the prenatal intensive care unit (PICU) at GMCH on Monday. He was admitted to PICU on September 16.

According to Dr MM Borkar, public relations officer of GMCH, of the 248 samples sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune since April this year, 89 have tested positive. The 35 deceased include nine pregnant women and three women who had delivered babies just a few days before their death.
