Increase in number of students falling victim to H1N1

PUNE: Fresh cases of swine flu infection among students is piling up with each passing day. The virus has infected a total of 417 students, of which four students have succumbed to the contagion till date.

"The students who succumbed to the H1N1 infection were in the age group of 6-15 years," said a state government official.

Commenting on it, microbiologist Siddhartha Dalvi said, "As compared to young adults, immune system is relatively underdeveloped among children below 10 years."

Dalvi elaborated, "The world has experienced recurrent epidemics and pandemics of H1N1 influenza in the past, albeit with a different strain of H1N1. Those people who have been previously exposed to the old H1N1 strain are also somewhat protected from the current novel H1N1 strain. This includes children above 10 years of age. Those under 10 years of age, with relatively naive immune systems, are at a higher risk for suffering from H1N1 influenza or its complications. This age group has not encountered the H1N1 virus previously."

It may be recalled that the analysis of the H1N1 casualties in Pune earlier had shown that 61.6 per cent of the deaths occurred in the 16 45 age group. It is the same age group which has registered 64.3 per cent deaths till date since April this year.

"As per the estimates of World Health Organisation (WHO), globally 51 per cent of swine flu deaths have so far occurred in young adults (aged 20 49 yrs). Seven per cent and 10 per cent deaths occurred among children under 10 and 10-19-year-olds respectively," said Sharad Agarkhedkar, president of the city chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA)

Dilip Sarda, former president of the city unit of the IMA, said, "Children under 10 are the most vulnerable as they constantly mingle with each other."

With vaccine on our side, children can now be protected from the H1N1 infection. Parents and teachers should encourage vaccination among them, he added.

Pune still not immune to H1N1 virus: NIV

After a year?s exposure to H1N1 virus and 379 deaths, Pune?s population is still not immune to swine flu.

The level of antibodies that has developed among the high-risk groups is not sufficient to control the infection and break the transmission of the virus, said Dr A C Mishra, Director of National Institute of Virology (NIV).

A study conducted by NIV shows that the risk of infection (seropositivity) was highest among schoolchildren during 2009 and those among the 15-19 age group were badly affected. While the good news is that this young population has developed antibodies against the virus, scientists are concerned that a higher level of immunity is required before the transmission can be broken.

The study on sero-epidemiology of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infections in Pune was published in the August 25 issue of BioMed Central Infectious Diseases, 2010, journal.

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) had undertaken serosurveys among the risk groups and general population to determine the extent of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus infections. Mishra told The Indian Express that blood samples had been collected from the high-risk groups of doctors, schoolchildren, commuters, office goers and slum dwellers between August 15 and December 11, last year.

The survey studied more than 9,000 people from different age groups and found that the level of antibodies developed among the general population was less than 20 per cent.

For instance, among the 2,527 schoolchildren whose samples were collected in September last year, the risk of infection was as high as 25 per cent.

Sassoon General Hospital doctors save H1N1-positive pregnant woman, baby

The Sassoon general hospital recently helped save a pregnant woman who was in a serious condition after being hit by swine flu.

A team of doctors from the hospital performed an emergency C-section and helped save both the baby and 19-year-old mother Sarika Jare from Ahmednagar.

According to Dr Arun Jamkar, dean of B J Medical College and Sassoon General hospital, Sarika was admitted to the hospital with a severe swine flu infection. She was in the ninth month of her pregnancy and on Wednesday, after an ultrasound examination detected that the amniotic fluid around the baby, an emergency C -section was done. This is the third such operation done on a pregnant mother with swine flu.

She was managed by Dr HB Prasad and physicians of the medicine department, Sassoon General Hospital, Pune. According to Jamkar it was a challenging task to manage the patient successfully by giving her anaesthesia and doing an emergency operation.

At Sassoon, so far out of the 170 patients treated from April, 68 have died as they had been critically ill upon admission. Out of these 68, at least 24 had co-morbid conditions like diabetes.

Meanwhile even as another three deaths have been registered by the health department increasing the toll to 171, deputy director of health services Dr Uddhav Gavhande admitted that a majority of the deaths are from the peripheral areas of the city and district. At a meeting held on Wednesday, Gavhande urged that medical officers in the district should be alert and treat patients accordingly. Workshops to train the doctors will also be held, he added.

Delay in treatment often leads to the death of a patient due to the H1N1 virus, and Gawhande directed the officials to even issue notices to private general practitioners to start early treatment.

Mandals gear up for Ganeshotsav

PUNE: With barely 10 days remaining for this year's Ganeshotsav, Ganapati mandals in the city are a hive of activity.

Mandal volunteers are out on the streets collecting contributions from citizens, while artisans are putting their concepts into shape and form for the very many tableaux. And, unlike last year, when the H1N1 flu pandemic subdued the festivities, this year the celebrations have been planned on a large scale by most mandals.

"This year, people are more aware of H1N1, but we are still going to do our bit by putting up banners on precautions that need to be taken," says Ravindra Malwadkar, president of Sakhalipeer Maruti Trust Mandal.

The Kasba Ganapati Mandal is also planning to chip in for the cause. "We are going to make the H1N1 vaccine available at the mandal stall throughout the festival. We have also planned a special Ganesh Yadnya' for everyone's well-being," says Anil Panse, treasurer of the mandal.

There will be a daily round of rituals and pujas' at the pandal of Tulshibaugh Ganapati mandal. The deity of this mandal will don a 5 ft high crown made from 18 kg of silver, which has been donated by a devotee.

The celebrations will be big with a big tableau, adds Panse. "But we will cut down on certain things. We are thinking of having less number of dhol-taasha' groups during the procession on the immersion day."

Meanwhile, the Guruji Taalim Mandal has increased its budget one-a-half times. "Decorations of our pandal are in full swing with a huge tableau on the cards. Our usual advertisers will support us," says Praveen Pardeshi, president of the mandal.

As of now, however, the enthusiasm is yet to pick up, says Ulhas Sadare, treasurer of Jilbya Maruti Trust Mandal. "Since the last year, people have been sceptical about stepping out of their homes during Ganeshotsav because of the H1N1 flu scare. But we hope the celebrations will be big this year. Fortunately, we have got good contributions from well-wishers and members alike. Our decorations are going to be simple but we are also planning a grand procession during the visarjan'," says Sadare.

Re: महाराष्ट्र Swine flu toll in Maharashtra reaches 820

3rd H1N1 peak showing signs of slowdown

Has the immunity level of Puneites improved against swine flu infections or is it that the third peak of H1N1 is finally ebbing? That's the question health authorities seem to be debating over these days, as not only has the death rate due to swine flu infections reduced in the past month but also the number of fresh infections.

"Yes it is true that the swine flu situation is improving. There are fewer positive patients and even lower is the number of those who need ventilator support," said Dr P S Pawar, medical superintendent, Sassoon General Hospital. "There have been times when critical patients have become well and gone home; overall deaths have decreased too. Maybe it is because of wide immunisation that fewer people are getting infections, or maybe the third peak is on its way out."

The statistics show that swine flu has lost much of its lethal sting. Health department figures reveal that from August 9 to 15, 27 people died of the infection while 268 tested positive.

In the following week, from August 16 to 22, there were 19 deaths and 243 positive reports, while the following week saw 15 deaths and 135 patients.

Even among schoolchildren, the numbers of new cases has gone down from 99 in the first week to 63 and 46 in the following weeks.

"Even though the third peak seems to be on the wane, it might be worthwhile to wait for another two weeks before we lower our guard even a bit. This should not be a temporary phase," said Dr C A Kante, officer at swine flu control room.

Dr Sharad Agharkehdkar, president of the Pune chapter of the Indian Medical Association, said that vaccination could be credited for fewer infections.

"The frenzy over the vaccination and the good response to vaccines the past few weeks might finally be bearing fruit as the number of cases is ebbing. It is good and we hope that this enthusiasm continues till at least 70 per cent of the population is inoculated as at that time we would be in a position to arrest spread of infection."
