No compulsory H1N1 vaccination: PMC


PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will not carry out compulsory influenza H1N1 vaccination drive in the city.

The PMC's in-charge medical officer R R Pardeshi said on Tuesday, "The Union government has not issued any directives in this regard. The PMC or the state government will not carry out a compulsory vaccination drive in the city."

State chief secretary J P Dange had convened a meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday to decide about the vaccination programme. Municipal commissioners and health department officials across the state were present for the meeting.

PMC corporators have been demanding that the PMC undertake H1N1 vaccination programmes for citizens and hold awareness drives.

"Soon, two new companies will be bringing out H1N1 vaccines into the market and it is up to the citizens to decide about taking the same," Pardeshi said.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade had on Monday told corporators in the general body meeting that there was no second wave of the H1N1 virus in the city. As of now, around 50 swine flu patients are admitted in Pune hospitals, of which only 13 are from within the PMC limits. Till date, the number of H1N1 deaths within the PMC limit is 115, including five from the cantonment areas.

"It is being wrongly projected that the city is assailed by the virus. We need to consider the fact that many of the patients being treated here for swine flu are from other parts of the state," Zagade had said.

H1N1: 3 more deaths in city, toll reaches 154


As many as three H1N1 deaths were reported in different hospitals in the city on Monday.

Navnath Baban Bankhele, 36, of Ambegaon in Pune district, was suffering from fever from July 31 and dies at the Sahyadri Munot Hospital here on Monday. Vijay Damdhere, 38, of Warje Mawadi died at KEM Hospital on Monday. Asha Musale, 28, succumbed to the virus at the Deeenanath Mangeshkar Hospital .

A total of 154 deaths have been registered by the health department since April this year. Officials said the total number of deaths due to swine flu in Pune from August last year is 365.

Over 12,000 people are screened for the virus daily. On Monday 4,047 persons with suspected swine flu symptoms were given Tamiflu. At present, 97 confirmed swine flu patients aer being treated at various hospitals in the city while 25 patients are on ventilator support, officials said.

PUNE: Three more persons succumbed to swine flu in the city taking the death toll to 368 even as health authorities stepped up efforts to combat the pandemic which has started showing an upward trend once again with the onset of monsoon.

The number of designated hospitals to treat the H1N1 infection has been increased to 25 with provision of 501 cots in the isolation wards. About 25 patients are reported to be on ventilator, according to the latest figures circulated by district officials.

They said civic health department was gearing up to meet a possibility of further spurt in transmission of the virus during the ensuing Ganesh festival that would attract large crowds for the ten-day celebrations.

While Tamiflu tablets continues to be the main line of treatment for the affected patients, no official word has come from government authorities on the advisability of specific vaccination for public.

Medical professionals in the city, have, however, started administering the intra-nasal spray vaccine introduced in the market by the Serum institute, to children, a spokesman of Indian Medical Association (IMA) said.

At the screening centres in various parts of the city, many people suspected of have contracted the virus are being hospitalised or home quarantined.

Pune has emerged as the epicentre of the H1N1 pandemic since the first casualty in August last year.

My brother was suffering from cold and cough since the first week of August. So, we thought he should be administered the vaccine as a precaution. So, we took him to the Fatima Convent Sahyadri Clinic where he was administered Nasovac by a doctor there.

Thirty-five-year-old Bhupendra Thakur died on Tuesday night after losing the battle with swine flu. What was different about this techie?s death from scores of other victims is that the Bhairobanala resident had approached a doctor at the Fatima Convent Sahyadri Clinic to take a precautionary dose of the H1N1 vaccine ? Nasovac ? while he was suffering from cold and cough.

The unidentified doctor, who administered the vaccine to him, allegedly did not tell his family that a person suffering from respiratory diseases should not take the vaccine. Moreover, the clinic claims Bhupendra?s name does not figure in its medical records, though his brother alleges otherwise.

Family speaks up
Bhupendra?s family is now claiming that he died owing to negligence on the part of the unidentified doctor who administered the vaccine to him. The deceased?s brother, Rajnikant, said, ?My brother was suffering from cold and cough since the first week of August.

So, we thought that he should be administered the H1N1 vaccine as a precautionary measure. That is why we purchased the vaccine from a pharmaceutical store in Camp and took him to the Fatima Convent Sahyadri Clinic where he was administered the nasal drops by a doctor there.?

He added, ?But after that, he developed fever and his cold deteriorated. So, we took him to Sassoon General Hospital on August 17, where he tested positive for swine flu.

While talking to the doctors at Sassoon, we came to know that this vaccine should not be administered to people who are unwell. They said Bhupendra?s condition worsened after taking the vaccine. If the doctor at the Clinic had warned us about this, we wouldn?t have used the vaccine.

I had accompanied my brother to the Clinic and the doctor, without asking any questions related to his health, immediately administered the vaccine. It was total negligence on the part of that doctor that cost us Bhupendra?s life.?

On being asked if they plan to take any legal action, Rajnikant said, ?We are still in shock over Bhupendra?s death. Once we come out of it, we?ll contemplate what to do about this.?

Dr S A Sangle, associate professor of Medicine, Sassoon General Hospital, who was treating Bhupendra, said, ?When Bhupendra?s family brought him to our hospital, he tested positive for swine flu. We immediately admitted him and started treatment.

But as was suffering from cold and cough at the time the vaccine was administered to him, the infection worsened. He developed bilateral pneumonia, due to which he had intensive coughing, breathlessness and very high fever. He was constantly on ventilator, but his condition was getting stable slowly.

But on Tuesday morning, he started getting loose motions and his condition worsened. We immediately changed the antibiotics and also sent his stool for testing. Later, on Tuesday night, he died of a cardiac arrest.?
Dr Sangle added, ?Just blindly taking the H1N1 vaccine as a precaution is not enough.

People need to be made aware that if a person is suffering from cold, cough, fever, diarrhoea, sore throat ? basically any upper respiratory illness or even acute asthma ? they should keep away from the vaccine.

Even a person allergic to eggs should not be administered this vaccine. Taking the vaccines under such conditions worsens the health problem, leading to complications.?

Bhupendra is not on our patient record: Clinic
Jyotiraj Mohite, administrative manager, Fatima Convent Sahyadri Clinic, said, ?We always ask the patients if they have cold, fever or any other illness before administering the vaccine.

And though the family claims that he was given the vaccine here, Bhupendra Thakur?s name is nowhere in our records.? Interestingly, the hospital authorities called up this correspondent many times to clarify their stance.

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Aug 25:
Two more suspected swine flu patients succumbed to the pandemic at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) during the last 24 hours, pushing the toll since April this year to 31, official sources said today.
Thirtyfive-year-old Dyneshwar Bankat Kale, resident of Sav village in Buldhana district, died last night.
Another victim, identified as Rambhau Damodhar Ugade (50) hailing from Ambad in Jalna district, was admitted to the special isolation ward of GMCH on Monday night. He succumbed to the disease yesterday at 0900 hrs. His throat swab samples had been sent to NIV, Pune, for testing, a hospital spokesperson said.
At present, 20 patients including six positive cases of swine flu, were undergoing treatment at isolation ward of GMCH, he added.

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed two more lives, taking the toll in the city to 370. According to state health officials, Bhupandra Thakur (35) of Bhairobanala died due to swine flu on August 24. He was suffering from cough and fever for eight days. Harshal Palaskar (30) of Akurdi died at YCM hospital on August 25. Palaskar had cold from August 13 and later had fever and cough from August 15. He had developed breathlessness and cough from August 18.

Meanwhile, 23 fresh cases of swine flu were detected on Wednesday. With this, the number of people who have caught the infection in the district has gone up to 1,668, of which 28 are being put on ventilator support at various hospitals.

As many as 300 patients queued up on Thursday at the swine flu screening centre at Khinswara Hospital of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Thergaon. Two feet away, patients and relatives form a parallel queue for medicine from the pharmacist. There is yet another long queue of women waiting to meet the gynaecologist.

A lone doctor examines suspected swine flu cases in the serpentine queue extending outside the gates. From 9 am to 1.30 pm, she examines over 300 patients. The number is roughly the same on Mondays.

?On Mondays and Thursdays, we have over 300 patients undergoing checks for suspected swine flu. On other days, around 150-200 troop in,? says V D Sawant, hospital in-charge. NAGPUR: The death of three more H1N1 positive women in the isolation ward of Government Medical College and Hospital on Thursday, has again underlined the higher susceptibility of women to the virus. Although all the three women died on Thursday, the hospital declared their death as H1N1 positive only on Friday after their reports were received from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

Each of them had some other underlying condition like diabetes, sickle cell and pregnancy. The death of these women has brought the death toll of swine flu patients at GMCH to 13 since April 1. Of these, 11 deaths have occurred since August 5.

Three more suspected swine flu patients, including an infant, died at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here in the past 24 hours.



One-year-old Rahul Jadhav of Mehtana, Jalna and Nilima Atre, 24, of Jadhavwadi here died on Saturday morning while Kesarbhai Devali, 55, of Hingoli died on Friday night. ?Their swab samples have been sent for tests at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. It will not be proper to term them swine flu cases now. We will confirm once we get reports from NIV, probably in three-four days,? GMCH swine flu isolation ward chief and medicine department head Dr Mangala Borakar said. The three deceased were on ventilator support ever since they were admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome. ENS

PUNE: The city's dubious distinction of being the swine flu casualties capital due to the high number of deaths is not entirely true, say experts.

Going by the official figures, almost 50 per cent of the people who succumbed to the H1N1 infection in various city hospitals were from outside Pune, while the rest were residents of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

"It is wrong to term the city as the swine flu casualties capital when most of the people who died were from the rural areas of the district or from other parts of the state," municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade said.

"Of the 368 swine flu deaths occurred in Pune between August 3, 2009 and August 25 this year, only 183 people were residents of the city areas of Pune (61) and Pimpri-Chinchwad (122), while the rest hailed from other parts of the state, who had come to Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad for treatment. Since these people died in the city hospitals, their deaths are also being calculated among the city's total toll," said Devendra Shirole, past-president of the state unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Among the 185 people who came from outside the PMC and PCMC limits and succumbed to the H1N1 infection at city hospitals, 116 were from the rural parts of the district, while 69 were from other parts of the state, says a health department report.

People who died due to the Influenza A H1N1 at city hospitals had come from nearby districts of Ahmednagar (22), Satara (19), Solapur (6), and even from far off places like Aurangabad (2), Akola (1), Latur (2) and Nanded (1). Two of them came from Karnataka, says the report.

Sharad Agarkhedkar, president of the city chapter of IMA, said: "Equipment like ventilators and blood gas monitors, which are required for managing critically ill patients, may not be available with them. So, patients are being referred to city hospitals."

Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon general hospital, said: "The foremost thing is the confidence to handle swine flu cases, manpower and machinery which is available in adequate amount in Pune."

"However, when such patients are referred to city hospitals, they are not sent with transport ventilators and ambulance equipped with cardiac facilities. Hence, by the time they land in Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad, their condition is almost irreversible. It becomes difficult to save them," said Agarkhedkar.

NAGPUR: The H1N1 death toll in various city hospitals since April 1 this season reached 22 excluding two suspected deaths. The number of deaths at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has reached 15 (thirteen in August. But these deaths still continue to be mainly from various cities and small towns in Vidarbha as well as cities from adjoining states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.)

The 22 deaths besides 15 from GMCH include three deaths at Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI), two at Chandak Hospital on Central Avenue and two deaths at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC). Besides these, two suspected deaths whose reports are still awaited and have not been declared as swine flu deaths include one death each at GMCH and IGGMC.

Of the 15 deaths at GMCH, four are from towns and villages in Nagpur district, two from Gondia, two from Gadchiroli, one from Chandrapur district and one from Seoni in Madhya Pradesh and two from the city.

A 58-year-old man, Ashutosh Agarwal from Akola who had tested positive on August 14 at OCHRI, died on Sunday. However, he was on ventilator only for one day.

With this death, the toll at OCHRI has touched three which includes one patient each from Jabalpur, Akola and one from the city. At OCHRI on Monday seven positive patients were undergoing treatment including one on ventilator.

Two patients, who died at GMCH in last three days, include 55-year-old Renuka Tapankar from Jaitala and Sheikh Ismail from Armori in Gadchiroli district. Renuka was admitted earlier at OCHRI and was shifted to GMCH as her family could not afford the expenses there. She was shifted to GMCH on Friday where she died on Saturday.

Her daughter-in-law 28-year-old Chandrabhaga Tapankar had died at OCHRI last Tuesday. On Monday, ten patients were admitted at GMCH which include four positive and six suspected cases. All of them were said to stable. At IGGMC only one patient was admitted.

GMCH dean Dr R Powar continued to maintain that there was no need to panic as these were sporadic deaths. Most of these patients were medically compromised and many reached the hospital very late, he said.

He stressed that 21 patients including five doctors and one public health official have been successfully treated in the isolation ward.

"If patients reach on time they can be treated successfully. But unfortunately this time, almost all patients are reaching very late," said Dr Arun Humne, head and professor of preventive and social medicine.

Forty-four-year-old Tukaram Kandhare from Katraj was suffering from flu like symptoms for a while before he turned breathless and was admitted to Sassoon Hospital. ?The minute he was put on artificial ventilation, the family hoped he would survive the swine flu attack,? recalled Dr P S Pawar, medical superintendent of Sassoon Hospital. He did and was discharged on August 8 this year.

So was 22-year-old Manisha Naphade who was rushed from Jalgaon to Sassoon?s ICU for swine flu treatment. ?She was put on artificial ventilation and was discharged on August 28,? said her husband Ramesh.,

Even as swine flu deaths continue to make news, according to the figures released by the health department, the number of deaths due to swine flu has decreased in the last month.

Statistics showed that the number of deaths has decreased. For instance, from August 9 to 15, there were 27 deaths and 268 positive patients, from August 16 to 22, there were 19 deaths and 243 positive patients and from August 23 to 29, there were 15 deaths and 135 patients positive with H1N1 virus. The number of schoolchildren with the infection too has decreased in the same period from 99, 63 to 46.


Dr Aarti Kinikar, Head of Department of Paediatrics at Sassoon Hospital said this year of 370 children examined for influenza- like illness, 37 tested positive for H1N1. While four out of seven children on mechanical ventilation died, 18 who were given non-invasive ventilation survived.

Says Dr Ujwal Rao, Deputy Medical Superintendent of Jehangir hospital, ?Patients are completely overwhelmed when they survive despite being incubated and attached to a ventilator for more than 15 days. It is like coming out of death?s grip. Since August last year we have ventilated 150 patients out of which ten succumbed to the virus and the rest survived,? , says Rao.

?For the family that sees their child going into respiratory distress, it?s truly a miracle when the patient does walk out of the ICU and goes home,? said Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, chief of the city unit of the Indian Medical Association who has treated three swine flu patients who survived after being on ventilator for over 15 days. He said there was a herd immunity now as people have been exposed to the virus for a year.
