H1N1 Pandemic in Maharashtra Sep 2009 - April 2011; 941 confirmed fatalities

Re: महाराष्ट्र Swine flu toll in Maharashtra reaches 609

Re: महाराष्ट्र Swine flu toll in Maharashtra reaches 609

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed three more lives, taking the death toll in the city to 313 since August 2009. All the three who succumbed to the H1N1 infection were from rural parts of Pune.

According to state health officials, Pushpa Balasaheb Musale (30), a resident of village Manchar in Pune district, died due to swine flu at 9.15 pm at Poona Hospital on August 6. Musale had fever with chills from 10 days and breathlessness from five days. Kamal Bhage Rakshe (38), a resident of village Tawarewadi in Pune district, died due to swine flu at Sassoon General Hospital at 8.20 am on August 7. Rakshe had fever and cough from eight days. Jagdevi Nagappa Jamadar (27), a resident of village Kalumbre in Pune district, died at YCM hospital at 5.30 pm on August 7.

"All the three had tested positive for the H1N1 virus," said state health officials.

Elaborating on how the virus is making big stride in rural interiors of the state, Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon General Hospital said, "The transmission of the H1N1 infection has gone into the rural interiors of the state. Of the total 33 people who fell victim to the virus at the isolation ICU of Sassoon Hospital between April1 till July end, as many as 17 were from rural parts of Maharashra,"

Sharing the view, Mandeep Chadha, deputy director of National Institute of Virology said, "Besides monsoon, which provides conducive conditions for its spread, the virus's stride in virgin interiors of the state is making the matter worse."

Pointing out other reasons why the virus could have spread in rural parts, microbiologist Siddhartha Dalvi said, "Rural parts of the district have witnessed considerable spells of rain and could have helped in spread of the virus. As we know, moisture in the air provides a perfect setting for spread of the infection. Moreover, awareness among people living in rural areas about the signs and symptoms of the H1N1 influenza is very low."

"H1N1 casualties in the rural parts of the Pune district are largely due to delayed diagnosis and treatment,"said Sharad Agarkhedkar, president of the city unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA).

"There is an urgent need to strengthen the rural health care system. Timely administration of Tamiflu is crucial for recovery," he added. As many as 103 people have died due to the infection infection in Pune district since April this year.

After 2 deaths, NMC wakes up

NAGPUR: It took death of two swine flu patients to shake the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's health department into action. After two deaths and five patients reporting positive, the department is drawing up plans to tackle the growing infection in city.

Besides starting six swine flu screening centres at Indora hospital, Dik dispensary, Sadar hospital, Mahal Dignostic centre, Isolation hospital and Shanti Nagar hospital, NMC health department has asked all its doctors and also private nursing homes to check the patients coming with complaints of extreme cold, cough and fever for H1N1 infection and shift positive patients to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical Hospital (Mayo Hospital).

Additional municipal commissioner incharge of health department Vishnupad Bute informed that all screening centres would remain open between 8 am and 2 pm including on Sundays and holidays.

Bute said, "NMC had given permission to four private hospitals-Wockhardt, Shankar Nagar, Chandak Hospital, Central Avenue, Krims Hospital, Ramdaspeth, and J J Hospital, Dhantoli-to treat swine flu patients. Thirty eight beds in private hospitals, 20 in GMCH and IGGMC along with 21 ventilators are available to deal with patients.

"If situation worsens, we will permit a few more private hospitals to treat the patients. The hospitals having proper facilities including separate wards and ventilators etc can apply for permission to NMC medical officer (medicine)," he added. Bute further said, "Last year, 12 deaths were reported from city out of the 113 H1N1 positive patients. A few of them were from Madhya Pradesh and nearby regions of city."

Meanwhile, recently over 35 malaria patients were reported from different parts of city. "We have directed health officials to start spraying insecticides in areas where Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes are breeding," said Bute. NMC has formed a rapid action team of its medical experts and staffers of malaria and filaria department who have started visiting the affected areas.

Swine flu: Four more dead in Pune, toll 109 since April

Four more people have died of swine flu in Pune in the last two days, taking the toll of registered deaths to 109 from April this year.

A majority of these deaths have been in rural areas, Health department sources said.

At present, a total of 25 patients are in intensive care units of various hospitals in the city. At least 4,069 patients who had flu-like symptoms were given Tamiflu.

A total of 10,360 people were screened at the corporation and government run centres in the city. On Monday, 33 people tested positive for the virus.

Thirty-five-year old Vaishali More from Pulachi wadi, Shivajinagar, was admitted in the Sassoon General Hospital with symptoms of cold and cough. She died on August 8.

Shailesh Kaijkar from Nanded district, 31, had fever, cough and body ache for eight days before he was admitted in the Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital. He died on August 9.

Twenty-one year old Chaya Mahesh Shelke from Ahmednagar district was suffering from cold and fever for eight days and was admitted in Sassoon after her condition turned critical. She died late on Sunday night.

31-year-old Dhanaji Chandgude from Baramati district too succumbed to the virus at Sassoon general hospital. He had fever, cough and cold for five days after which he was brought to the city, say health officials.

Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made it mandatory for its medical staff to take the vaccine for swine flu or give in writing that the civic body will not be responsible if they succumb to any infection due to H1N1.

PUNE: Eight persons including a 10-month-old baby, have died of swine flu here in the last two days, taking the toll due to the viral infection in the city to 331 since August last year, health officials said on Thursday.

Punecivic medical officer R Pardeshi said the transmission rate of the infection had been showing an upward trend in the last few days and people needed to take proper precautions to prevent and treat the disease.

At the screening centres, 46 persons tested positive for the virus yesterday.

The Maharashtra government has not yet issued any advisory regarding mass administration of anti-swine flu vaccines that have hit markets, an official said.

Rs 1,400 for a dose of swine flu vaccine

Pune: A family in Pune was in for a shock when three of its members went to get a shot for swine flu. The doctor from Sinhagad Road charged almost Rs 1400 for the vaccine - nearly 10 times the original price, and the reason she gave for the high charges was the "quality service" rendered by her before and while administering the doses.

On top of that, the doctor also squeezed out the last drop of juice from a five-dose vaccine vial by giving six doses from it.

The actual cost of the vaccine is Rs 150 per dose.

The doctor justified the charges saying she had taken the risk of testing the vaccine on herself and even argued that giving six doses from a five-dose vial was all right.

Deepak Kokane, a resident of Manikbaug, Sinhagad Road, said his wife and two children recently went to their paediatrician for H1N1 preventive vaccination.

"The doctor told us the vaccine was available in a five-dose vial and she would give it to my family after she had found two or three other people who wanted to take the vaccine," said Kokane. "On July 25, she called my wife Rupali, son Aditya and daughter Khushi to the clinic for vaccination."

He said that besides his wife and two children, the doctor gave the vaccine from the vial to another woman and her two children.

"Firstly, how did six people get vaccinated from a five-dose vial?" said Kokane. "After the vaccination, she told my wife the charges were Rs 1,400 per person."

Kokane said his wife was taken aback by the high charges, but was even more surprised by what followed - the doctor virtually held her hostage when she said she did not have enough money on her at that moment.

"My wife had just Rs 1,500 on her as we knew the cost of the vaccine to be Rs 150 per dose and that all other clinics were giving it for Rs 250," said Kokane. "The doctor did not allow my family to leave the clinic until the money she was asking for was brought to her. This, despite the fact that my family has been going to the clinic for many years."

H1N1 claims four more lives

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed four more lives, taking the death toll in the city to 320 since August 2009. Two of the four victims hailed from other districts of the state.

According to state health officials, Vaishali Babanrao More (35), a resident of Pulachiwadi in Shivajinagar, fell victim to the virus at the Sassoon Hospital at 5.45 am on August 8. Chaya Mahesh Shelke (21), a resident of Bangarda village in Ahmednagar district, died due to swine flu at the Sassoon Hospital at 8.30 am on August 8. Shelke had fever and cough for eight days and breathlessness since two days.

Another victim, Dhanaji Shivram Chandgude (31), a resident of Moregaon Supa in Baramati, died due to the swine flu infection at the Sassoon Hospital at 10.45 pm on August 8. Chandgude had fever, cough and cold for five days. The fourth victim Shailesh Shyamrao Kaijkar (31), a resident of Mudkhed in Nanded district, died due to swine flu at the Deenanath Manageshkar Hospital at 10 am on August 9. Kaijkar had fever, cough, running nose and body ache for eight days.

Meanwhile, 33 fresh cases of swine were detected on August 9, while the condition of 25 patients continues to be critical. All of them have been put on ventilator support at various hospitals in the district, said officials. A total of 4069 people were given Tamiflu after medical examination in the district on Monday. A total 320 patients are being treated at various hospitals. Of them, 130 have tested positive for the virus and 181 are suspected to have caught the infection, said officials. The death toll has gone up to 109 since April this year.

"It is important to break the rapid transmission of the virus now as we are well into the second wave. And the only way we can do this is to build the herd immunity' which we don't have now with the help of vaccination," say experts.

Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon General Hospital said, "Already, 30 per cent of the city's population has developed natural immunity against the virus. Now with vaccines by our side, more and more people should get themselves vaccinated. This natural as well as vaccine-induced immunity will help us build herd immunity, with which the transmission of the virus can easily be cut down."

One succumbs in Satara

Pune: A forty five year old man succumbed to swine flu in Satara on Tuesday. With this, the death toll in Satara district has gone up to 14. According to doctors from the Krantisinh Nana Patil General Hospital, Rajendra Jaysingh Thombre, a resident of Kadegaon village in Sangli district, died at the hospital early morning. As many as 14 patients are currently being treated at the hospital. Of them, four have tested positive while 10 are suspected to be infected, said Padmakar Kadam, head of swine flu control room in Satara.

Re: महाराष्ट्र Swine flu toll in Maharashtra reaches 664

The first 4 are previously reported fatalities from last Sunday, Monday. The final fatality Rajendra Jaysingh Thombre was admitted and died within hours on Tuesday morning. A 48 hour delay on the confirmation would suggest that he was not under treatment elsewhere prior to admission.
