The Ministry of Health and its partners including WHO facilitated a Saturday press conference in Conakry to discuss the outbreak of Ebola fever now raging in southern Guinea and in the capital. The toll available from the services of Department of Health is 72 deaths out of 112 cases detected .

In his introduction, the National Director of Health Promotion has the status of epidemiological Ebola to 29 March 2014. Dr Rafiou Diallo said that ten cases were detected including five deaths and here is the breakdown: Gueckédou 4 cases Macenta : 1; Dabola 1 and Conakry : 4 with 0 deaths . Since the onset of the disease , the prefecture of Gueckédou was the most affected with 51 deaths out of 73 cases. It is followed by Macenta with 12 deaths out of 22 cases. Kissidougou has two deaths reported 7 cases . While Dabola , two cases have been reported with two deaths.

According to Dr Rafiou Diallo, the disease manifests in its infancy with fever , fatigue , accompanied by diarrhea , vomiting , sometimes with bleeding. It is transmitted by direct contact with the infected person . He appealed to the population to avoid the manipulation of monkey meat , save the mice, but also against non-essential travel in epidemiological areas. To believe Dr. Diallo , the Ministry of Health and its partners have developed a contingency plan to counter the spread of the disease. Finally , he calls everyone to serenity.

For its part , the National Director of Prevention said during the meeting that answers the maximum incubation period is twenty-one days questions. Exceeded this time , there are chances that the disease will not develop in the body because the person is not considered risk has he said. For Dr Sakoba Keita is amplified quite the spread of this disease in Guinea. Now, he says , everyone does not die of this disease. As proof, he defends himself , seven (7 ) people resisted Ebola virus Macenta fourteen Guékédou eight in Conakry and a person Kissidougou , who are alive today, but monitored.

"The Ebola virus is a disease of dirty hands . By washing hands with disinfectants, can block the road to this epidemic, " insist the director of prevention . According to him, the disease would have been sent from Central Africa where the disease has wreaked havoc . For hygiene measures and to avoid contamination of the disease, he recommends hygiene of the house, disinfecting rooms and handwashing . Dr Sakoba Keita calls Guineans not to panic and rumor.

Now he has announced , for greater efficiency, preventive hygiene measures will be taken in health facilities including washing hands with disinfectants to limit the spread of the virus. Finally it should be noted that six (6) doctors were swept away by Ebola in the forest region where they were in service.

Ebola epidemic could become global crisis, experts warn

8 confirmed cases in capital of Conakry, city of 2 million with an international airport

The Associated PressPosted: Mar 29, 2014 1:24 PM ET|Last Updated: Mar 29, 2014 1:24 PM ET
...
Health officials warn that the arrival of Ebola in this sprawling city of some 2 million people with an international airport could spell disaster. Among the poorest countries in the world, Guinea has severely limited medical facilities and a large population living in slums where the virus could spread quickly.

"Poor living conditions and lack of water and sanitation in most parts of Conakry poses a serious risk of this epidemic spiralling into a crisis," said Ibrahima Toure, country director for the aid group Plan International.

Panic already has grown among residents since the government announced the Conakry cases late Thursday on national television. While most days up to 300 patients seek treatment at Donka Hospital, less than 100 came on Friday as news spread that the Ebola patients were being quarantined there.
...
Medical teams have been travelling on foot to villages where cases have been reported. The number of people possibly contaminated expanded exponentially when the Conakry patient travelled some 430 kilometres across the country in search of help.
...
Joseph Gbaka Sandouno, a program unit manager with Plan International in the village of Gueckedou, said it's been especially difficult for people to stay calm after having witnessed "frightening scenes where people have died with severe bleeding."

"People are getting desperate as every other day somebody is dying," he said, noting that 51 of the deaths had taken place there. "People are saying only God can save us now."

Re: Guinea - Hemorrhagic fever killed 70 people with 111 suspected cases - Ebola lab confirmed in 19 cases

This is exactly what 'experts' have to avoid: to fuel panic.

The situation is concerning, but with proper containment of suspected cases and with implementation of procedures for infection control in health care settings the number of new cases could be reduced, with the needed provisions of materials and resources.

In the past Ebola menaced other big urban settings such as Kinshasa but the situation had been controlled.

The poor conditions of health infrastructures in these regions is the main reasons behind the rapid and sometimes apparently unstoppable spread of these diaseses, as well as the lack of all other essential basic services like water reservoir, sewage system and affordable settlements for people.

It could be several weeks away an effective control of this outbreak but the alarming messages do not help much; instead, clear guidance for population, those with suspected symptoms that need to isolate themsevels and their close contacts before attempt to travel are of utmost importance to enhance both the containment and confidence among people.

International community must recognize the urgent need of basic supplies for management of cases, establishment of isolation units, provision of funds, resources and materials to fullfill every aspect of this situation, included the guarantee of free access to care and food.

Ebola: should we worry?
By By Dr Jonathan Sitali on Saturday 29 March 2014, 14:00:00 CAT (88 Reads)

...

Since the first case of Ebola was reported, there have only been a handful of sites at which outbreaks of Ebola have emerged. During each outbreak, the infection has been more or less contained to that particular area. Perhaps this is because signs of the infection appear early (within three days of exposure) or that most people infected die (up to 90%) making it almost impossible for infected people to move from one area to another. The other reason is that the heightened surveillance that surrounds each outbreak makes it difficult for people exposed or infected to move outside the outbreak zone. Because of all this, it is highly unlikely that we are in immediate danger.
Having said that though, it is up to each one of us to take responsibility and adhere to the precautions outlined above. Furthermore, we all need to be vigilant and report to the relevant authorities at the slightest hint that something is amiss. As we move together to ensure that we do our part to see that this latest outbreak is quickly contained and also keep our country safe, let us remember our brothers in West Africa and lend any help we can so that no more lives are lost.

Doctors suspected hemorrhagic fever : " They are at home , waiting for results"

"The person suspected of being contaminated Ebola virus , which was received here did no have surgery. This is a student in thesis situation came to work here with us during his internship . He came yesterday when he had a fever. He was given an infusion here in the room that is closed there. But , since he was in the hospital Sino Guinea when the Dabola patient was treated there and that he showed signs , we asked him to go to Donka to give samples . He actually went to Donka where samples were taken before returning home. All hospital doctors Sino- Guinea Kip? of which have been in contact with the patient Dabola underwent samples before going home ...

"These are the explanations this morning given to Guineenews by doctors found at flag number one (1 ), where the student - doctor was admitted yesterday , Friday, March 28, 2014 .

In the absence of the head of this department , the doctors met have not accepted a formal response to the charges against their service. According to a doctor who contacted Guineenews yesterday night under the guise of anonymity, patient ( medical student) had vomit at Ignace Deen during his infusion before getting towards Donka .

In addition, another patient who came from Gu?k?dou would have been operated on before knowing he was carrying hemorrhagic Ebola virus through the post surgery examinations. After being informed , the director of the national Ignace Deen Hospital , Doctor Awada , have asked the doctors and staff who have been in contact with the patient to put all quarantined . Which would have caused howls of protest from them at the hospital around 15 pm . Doctors have not only refused to quarantine , but continue to come to the hospital . "This is false" categorically denies the first doctor met on Saturday.

"The case is still a suspect. His name is Kollie. He is native from N'z?r?kor? and not Gu?k?dou and he resides in Conakry here . He did his internship with us . He still is not a confirmed patient . He is only suspect. And that is why we asked him to go for samples at Donka . And at Donka , they said to wait three days to see if it is confirmed or not . Therefore can not know anything until Monday. and even if I did , I can tell you anything without the permission of the department head , "added the doctor we found the office of Pavion1 .

Finally, we will have neither the contact ( or maintenance) of the department head , who was absent at 11am , this Saturday, March 29 , nor any other officer of the national Ignace Deen hospital. Officially, all the suspects are expected to remain in quarantine , pending confirmation or denial of their contagion exams, etc. .

The doctor who joined Guin?enews by the phone last night was most worried about the obvious risk that those patients who have been in contact with sick Ebola infect patients lying in hospital , members of their families who are unaware , enclosures even the rest of the population in the various districts .

Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever, Guinea (Situation as of 30 March 2014)

30 March 2014

As of 28 March, the total number of suspected and confirmed cases in the on-going Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (EHF) outbreak in Guinea has increased to 112, including 70 deaths (Case Fatality Rate 62.5%).

New suspected cases have been reported from Conakry (4 cases), Gu?k?dou (4), Macenta (1) and Dabola (1) prefectures.

The date of hospital admission of the most recent suspected case is 28 March.

Two of the new suspected cases have been in health care workers indicating the need to further strengthen health facility-based infection prevention and control.

Domestic infection prevention is being supported for patients managed in the community, including training carers in safe practices and the community in safe burials.

In addition, 235 contacts have been traced of whom over 130 require continued follow-up. Active contact tracing is proceeding.

To date 24 clinical samples from Guinea have tested positive by PCR for the ebolavirus in samples from cases in Conakry (11), Gu?k?dou (6) and Macenta (7).

In addition, Liberia has reported 2 laboratory confirmed cases in persons who had travelled to Guinea.

Both Sierra Leone and Liberia have revised down the number of suspected cases reported previously.

Liberia reported that 3 persons from Gu?k?dou developed symptoms and signs suggestive of EHF and died in Liberia. Pre-mortem samples collected from these cases tested positive for ebolavirus at the Institut Pasteur (IP) Dakar mobile laboratory in Conakry.

Sierra Leone has identified 2 suspected cases, both of whom died.
All of the confirmed and suspected cases reported by Liberia and Sierra Leone had travelled to Guinea before illness onset.

Investigations into these suspected cases are on-going. No new suspected cases have been reported from either Liberia or Sierra Leone.

In accordance with the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005), the Ministries of Health of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia together with WHO and other response partners are implementing a coordinated response to the outbreak.

WHO has alerted countries bordering Guinea about the outbreak and to heighten surveillance for illness consistent with a viral haemorrhagic fever, especially along land borders.

As this is a rapidly changing situation, the number of reported cases and deaths, contacts under medical observation and the number of laboratory results are subject to change due to enhanced surveillance and contact tracing activities, ongoing laboratory investigations and consolidation of case, contact and laboratory data.

The national authorities of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have activated their national emergency committees, prepared EHF response plans and carried out needs assessments.

Rapid Response Teams to investigate cases and trace contacts.
Priority activities include active case finding in affected communities, case isolation and management, contact tracing and raising awareness of EHF risk factors and prevention among health care workers, affected communities and the general public.

Case isolation facilities have been established and planned in collaboration with international partners, information and education materials developed and distributed, intensive multimedia communications are underway and psychosocial support is being provided to patients, their families and the affected communities.

WHO and response partners are continuing to support the outbreak response through mobilising international expertise (clinical care, infection prevention and control including isolation services, surveillance and epidemiology, laboratory diagnosis and reference, logistics and social mobilisation. WHO is also supporting countries in financial and human resource mobilisation and supplies such as personal protective equipment (PPE).

WHO does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone based on the current information available for this event.
