FG intensifies surveillance on ebola virus, says official

March 27, 2014 by NAN
The Federal Ministry of Health on Thursday in Abuja said it has intensified surveillance to prevent the transmission of the ebola disease across the country. The ministry?s Chief Consultant Epidemiologist, Dr Akin Oyemakinde, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the current outbreak of the disease in Guinea necessitated the measures taken.
...
Oyemakinde said the country?s port authorities? health care officers have been sensitised to identify individuals suspected of being with the disease?s symptoms, and notify the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
?There is no cure for the disease and no vaccine, and anybody with the disease will only get supportive therapy. Therefore preventing the disease from coming into Nigeria is paramount..
?Guinea is close to us, and there is a report that about 60 people have died from the disease. Now, every country is at alert because the disease is spreading to neighbouring countries.
?We have sent an alert to all State Commissioners for Health, with the attention of the state epidemiologists, to sensitise the public and the health workers,? he said.
NAN reports that a recent UNICEF report says the haemorrhagic fever has spread quickly from southern Guinea, hundreds of kilometres away.
A media report also stated that Sierra Leone?s Health Ministry said it was investigating two suspected cases of ebola.
The World Health Organisation said the infection had emerged through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes and porcupines.
These were those found dead or ill in the rain forest.
?Later, Ebola spreads in the community through human-to-human transmission, resulting from close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people.
?Burial ceremonies where mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of ebola.
?Transmission through infected semen can occur up to seven weeks after clinical recovery,? it said:tiphat:http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-intensifies-surveillance-on-ebola-virus-says-official/

26 March 2014

U.S. Embassy Conakry, Guinea
U.S. Embassy Medical Practitioner attended the World Health Organization (WHO) Ebola Task Force meeting hosted by WHO today and reports:

  • There are a total of 88 suspected individuals of hemorrhagic fever in Guinea.
  • 63 of these individuals have died.
  • Out of 37 samples, 11 have tested positive for the Ebola virus to date.
  • All of the positive tests have come from the far South Eastern Region of Guinea.
  • There have been NO proven Ebola cases in Conakry and at this time there are NO suspected cases in Conakry.
Ebola is not spread by casual contact; it requires direct contact with the body fluids of someone severely ill with - or recently deceased from - the disease, or by eating contaminated bush meat.
The direct risk of infection is negligible if one has not been in close contact with the body fluids of those actively sick with Ebola. Schools and embassies in Conakry remain open and movement through town should remain unaffected by this disease.
As a reminder, practice good hygiene with frequent hand-washing and avoid the severely ill.
For more information on Ebola hemorrhagic fever, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola.

The CNOSCG invite Guineans to respect the rules of hygiene to prevent Ebola .

The National Council of Organizations of the Guinean Civil Society ( CNOSCG ) made this Wednesday, March 27, 2014 , a statement following the emergence of Ebola in the south to invite Guinean populations to observe the necessary preventive measures and even mandatory at this stage , learned your daily Guin?enews .

These measures are summarized in several points including the strict observance of hygiene rules ( eat and drink clean, be clean , wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet ... ) , avoiding contamination pathways ( sweat, saliva , blood, urine, semen about sick ... ) , limit contact with suspicious persons , inform the usual health or emergency services immediately or to ensure the safety and disinfect with chlorine public toilets in mosques , churches , markets, bars , restaurants , hotels , medical centers or other public place .

The CNOSCG also informs all that hemorrhagic fever is not othordoxe beginning with '' a little insidious , with nonspecific flu-like signs such as fever, muscle aches , diarrhea and vomiting. It is only in a second time as signs of bleeding occur ,'' reads the statement signed by the chairman of CNOSCG Dr. Dansa Kourouma .

Challenging health authorities at all levels as well as development partners and national and international NGOs to stop the spread of this disease through a communion of ideas and action in active solidarity , the platform of civil society said it remains focused to provide a contribution to the Guinean citizen populations tested or tormented by Ebola .

And all his condolences to the bereaved families and people of Guinea , the national office of CNOSCG invited its branches and partners across the country to mobilize around the Guinean populations by organizing information campaigns, awareness and education on hygiene and contamination pathways Ebola hitherto regarded by specialists as a deadly disease that has no vaccine and no treatment rules.:tiphat:http://guineenews.org/2014/03/le-cn...pecter-les-regles-dhygiene-pour-eviter-ebola/

Health : the fight against Ebola intensifies in Guinea

Domestic and foreign health teams intensified Thursday Guinea their struggle to stop the spread of an outbreak of Ebola , a highly contagious and often fatal, causing dozens of deaths since January.

The latest figures from the Guinean Ministry of Health indicate that 88 cases of viral hemorrhagic fever detected in southern Guinea , there have been 63 deaths since January , a case fatality rate of 71.5 %.

City Gu?k?dou is the most affected with 45 deaths in 61 cases , followed by cities Macenta ( 12 deaths out of 19 cases) Kissidougou ( 5 deaths in 7 cases) , and Kankan with one fatal case .

Tests carried out on samples analyzed in specialized institutes in Europe and Dakar have established that at least eleven cases of hemorrhagic fever were caused by the Ebola virus.
No indication has so far been provided on the origin of other cases of fever.

Since the announcement there is a week of the outbreak, the Guinean health authorities and international organizations in Guinea , foremost among them the World Health Organization (WHO) and M?decins Sans Fronti?res ( MSF) have increased the action to contain the epidemic and strengthened their teams on the ground.

There is no vaccine or cure against Ebola and only preventive measures can help control the spread of the epidemic , such as the installation of isolation of patients and routine disinfection of homes of people living centers.

Several tons of equipment, including " hygiene kits " which should allow local residents to protect themselves, were shipped in southern Guinea and information and awareness campaigns through the media and the " door -to-door " - including the most remote villages - are gaining momentum .

Dr. Sakoba Keita , head of prevention Guinea Ministry of Health said Wednesday that he thought the " peak " of the epidemic was exceeded, which was not confirmed by other international health sources.

- Avoid cross-border transmission -

Vigilance is up in six countries bordering Guinea , five dead six suspected cases have been registered in Liberia and two cases , including one death , in Sierra Leone , the two closest to the south of Guinea countries , home of the epidemic.

No further cases have so far been detected in four border states such as C?te d' Ivoire, Mali , Senegal and Guinea -Bissau. However, these have strengthened their epidemiological warning systems and enhanced their health checks at borders.

" We make every effort " to monitor the territory, mainly in health centers and borders "to prevent cross-border transmission ," said Wednesday AFP Daouda Coulibaly, a medical epidemiologist at the National Institute of public hygiene ( INHP ) of C?te d' Ivoire.

The incubation time of the disease caused by Ebola (2 to 21 days ) does not rule out the presence of infected individuals in the neighboring countr...:tiphat:http://www.kababachir.com/index.php...d=57087:afp&catid=104:faits-divers&Itemid=472

Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever, Guinea (Situation as of 27 March 2014)

27 March 2014

The Ministry of Health of Guinea has today reported 4 laboratory confirmed cases of Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (EHF) in the capital, Conakry.

In addition, a fifth suspected case died without laboratory confirmation.

Intensive case investigations are underway to identify the source and route of these patients? infection, record their travel histories before arrival in Conakry and determine their period of infectivity for the purposes of contact tracing.

Rapid Response Teams are carrying out these investigations and sensitizing health care workers and the affected communities about EHF to reduce the risk of further transmission.

The total number of suspected and confirmed cases in the on-going EHF outbreak in Guinea has increased to 103, including 66 deaths.

Today 15 new suspected cases were reported in Guinea (8 in Guekedou and 2 in Macenta, in addition to the 5 cases in Conakry). The case fatality rate (CFR) is 64%.

All age groups have been affected but most of the cases are adults aged 15-59 years.

Four health care workers are among the deaths attributed to the Ebola outbreak.

As this is a rapidly changing situation, the number of reported cases and deaths are preliminary and subject to change due to enhanced surveillance activities and laboratory testing of cases.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, most of the cases have been reported in three districts in south east Guinea (Guekedou, Macenta, and Kissidougou districts). Contact tracing and follow up continues in these areas.

To date, 15 cases have tested positive by PCR testing for the Ebola virus, confirmed by collaborating laboratories including the Institut Pasteur Lyon, France, Institut Pasteur (IP) Dakar, Senegal and Bernhard-Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine Hamburg, Germany. Laboratories studies demonstrated that Zaire ebolavirus is the virus responsible for the outbreak.

The number of laboratory confirmed cases is subject to change as the laboratory results from the participating laboratories are still being consolidated and new samples are being tested.

WHO has alerted countries bordering Guinea about the outbreak and to heighten surveillance for illness consistent with a viral haemorrhagic fever, especially along land borders.

Both Sierra Leone and Liberia have reported suspected cases and deaths consistent with EHF to WHO among people who had travelled to Guinea before symptom onset.

To date, WHO has received no reports of viral haemorrhagic fever from either country in individuals who have not travelled to Guinea.

The three countries are sharing information with each other and with WHO daily.

Liberia has reported 8 suspected cases of EHF, including 6 deaths, with travel histories to Guekedou district.

Sierra Leone has reported 6 suspected cases, including 5 deaths. Investigations into these suspected cases are on-going.

The MOH together with WHO and other partners continues to implement measures to control the outbreak and prevent further spread. As part of the international response to the outbreak, WHO and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) have deployed experts deployed to support Guinea in the following areas: outbreak coordination, clinical case management, surveillance and epidemiology, diagnostics, infection prevention and control, social mobilisation outbreak logistics and medical anthropology. Training health and community workers to detect, notify and manage suspected and confirmed cases and in measures to strengthen infection prevention and control, including the safe burial of the deceased, are priority interventions.

The Emerging and Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory Network (EDPLN) is working with national laboratories in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to ensure access to laboratory testing of suspected cases and for supplementary testing.

WHO does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone based on the current information available for this event.

Guinean Health Minister Remy Lamah told Reuters that four cases of the haemorrhagic fever - one of the most lethal infectious diseases known to man - had been confirmed in the capital and the victims had been placed in quarantine.
...
Lamah said the virus appeared to have been transmitted by an old man who showed signs of haemorrhagic fever after visiting Dinguiraye in central Guinea, more than 150 km (90 miles) from the previously identified outbreaks of Ebola.

Four of the man's brothers started to show the same symptoms after attending his funeral in the central town of Dabola, 200 km (125 miles) from Conakry, and were tested for Ebola on their return to the coastal capital.

"The four tested positive," Lamah told Reuters. "They have been placed in an isolation ward in Donka hospital."

The old man's family has also been quarantined, the minister said.

Medical sources said two staff at the Kipe University Hospital in Conakry, where the victims had initially been treated, had also developed signs of the disease.
