Since the announcement of the presence of an outbreak of Ebola in Guinea which has sixty dead in the forest region, neighboring countries are concerned and are now on alert.

These neighboring countries are currently in a battle against the killer Ebola virus and fear spread haemorrhagic fever after the discovery of suspected cases in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The side of the neighboring Côte d'Ivoire, which is some 150 km around the outbreak of the virus, authorities say fear "real risk of spreading" of the epidemic.
It is for this reason that a ministerial meeting took place on Tuesday, with the main concern, the measures to bar the way to the Ebola outbreak raging in Guinea, which 6 cases were detected Liberia, another neighboring country.

To the Director General of the National Public Health Institute (INHP) in Côte d'Ivoire, Simplice Dagnan, health districts, particularly in western Côte d'Ivoire, near the region of Guinea and Liberia were put on alert to detect "early" all suspected cases, whereas the controls were strengthened land and air borders, we do we relate.
"We are concerned. Disease can travel easily. Pets (which carry the virus, Ed) know no borders" said Mr. Dagnan.

Mali also is not left behind in this mobilization following the emergence of Ebola virus in Guinea. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Health has urged people to be alert to the situation prevailing in Guinea.
In Liberia, the authorities have also established a health monitoring system, as well as Sierra Leone, last neighboring country of Guinea to record two suspected Ebola cases, including one death.

Senegal has fear that the spread of the disease reaches its territory. Therefore, emergency measures were taken to strengthen the surveillance system in all medical areas of the country and even in private facilities or the provision of means of protection in certain border to Guinea. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has recently consolidated all of its prevention services to reflect on a plan to protect its people.

"We have taken a number of measures," assured Dr Mamadou Ndiaye, director of the Prevention Department of Health and Social Action, after an emergency meeting held on the occasion.
Epidemic hemorrhagic fever was declared in parts of southern Guinea near the border with Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

On Tuesday, the Guinean government, through the Minister for Public Health, welcomed the actions of all the technical and financial partners involved with the mobilization of CDC Atlanta to support the management of the response to the epidemic.

At the same time, he recalled that the last 24 hours, no new cases of haemorrhagic fever have been recorded throughout the territory.
However, a new case of death was recorded at Guekedou in Forest Guinea.

Ghana MPs issue ebola alert!

Wednesday 26th March , 2014 4:25 pm]Ghana’s lawmakers have called for an “urgent” national preparation to forestall possible outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the country.
It follows a wave of fatal outbreaks of the virulent disease in neighboring Guinea and Liberia, where health workers have been battling to contain the virus since Monday.
At Wednesday’s sitting of the 275-Member Ghanaian Legislature, a former Minister for Health, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, read a pressing statement, calling for an “urgent meeting between the Ministers of Health, Interior, Foreign Affairs and the National Security Coordinator to discuss the Ebola outbreak that threatens our borders”.
That meeting –– the Wa West MP told the House ––– must also “propose measures to contain” the disease “in the event of the outbreak here”.
“Further, I recommend that an inter-agency taskforce be set up, consisting of relevant institutions under these three ministries and the National Security,” he added.
Mr. Chireh said, “We must not wait until the disease gets here before we act! The...:tiphat:http://www.citifmonline.com/?p=8878

Ebola outbreak 'contained', death toll rises

Thu, 27 Mar 2014
Authorities in Guinea say they have stopped an outbreak of deadly Ebola fever from spreading beyond the country's remote southeast, although the number of deaths from suspected infections has risen to at least 63.
U.N. agencies and medical charities such as Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have scrambled to help Guinea - one of the world's poorest countries - cope with the virus, amid fears it might spill across borders into neighbouring West African nations.
Liberia, which shares a border with southeastern Guinea, reported at five deaths this week from suspected infections in people who had come across the frontier to seek treatment. Sierra Leone has also uncovered two deaths in the border town of Boidu suspected to be linked to Ebola, one of the most lethal infectious diseases known to man.
Laboratory tests have so far only confirmed 13 cases of the disease, from 45 tests. More samples, some of them from Sierra Leone and Liberia, have been sent for examination.
"The epidemic is not spreading to other regions," Guinean Health Minister Remy Lamah told Reuters by telephone from the affected area in Guinea's remote Forest region. "Medical equipment has been shipped in. MSF is helping us to control the outbreak."
An MSF spokesperson said the number of suspected infections had risen by just two from Tuesday to 88, according to government figures. Four more people died, however, bringing the death toll to 63.
MSF flew in 33 tonnes of medical equipment at the weekend, enabling the creation of an isolation ward in Gueckedou, the epicentre of the outbreak. Ten patients with Ebola symptoms were receiving treatment there, MSF said.
Another isolation facility is being set up in the town of Macenta to deal with suspected cases there, said the medical charity, which is reinforcing its emergency team of 30 staff.
BAN ON BUSHMEAT, BATS
Since its discovery in 1976 in what is now Democratic Republic of Congo, only around 2,200 cases of Ebola have been recorded. Of those, 1,500 were fatal.
The outbreak of mysterious haemorrhagic fever was first detected in Guinea in February. Scientists have since identified it as the most virulent Zaire strain of the Ebola virus.
The virus is believed to reside primarily in bats between rare outbreaks in humans. Some experts believe it may have been carried by bats from central Africa, where it is more common.
In an effort to stop the transmission of the disease, Guinea has banned the sale and consumption of bats and other types of bush meat, and banned public funerals for those killed. Volunteers from the Guinean Red Cross were disinfecting the homes of victims and dealing with infected bodies.
The disease incubates for up to three weeks and its symptoms are similar to malaria and cholera, making it difficult to detect in West Africa, where such diseases are endemic.

UNICEF swiftly responds to Ebola outbreak in Guinea

CONAKRY, Guinea/DAKAR, Senegal ? With an Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (Ebola HF) outbreak declared in the Southern part of Guinea, 11 suspected cases of children infected have been reported, three of whom have died. In an effort to prevent the severe, often-fatal disease from spreading further, UNICEF immediately rushed in aid and delivered health supplies to the most affected areas.
When the official declaration was made by the Government last week, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Guinean Ministry of Health, sent five metric tons of equipment including calcium hypochlorite, chlorine, gloves, raincoats, plastic mats, blankets, tarpaulins, and syringes to health workers and at-risk communities.
Additionally, when the first signs of the disease appeared, UNICEF distributed 5,500 boxes of liquid chlorine, 50,000 pieces of soap and chlorine powder to medical workers and communities in the affected areas. Rehydration fluids and oral rehydration salts have also been supplied to help with some of the symptoms of Ebola HF, although there is no known cure or vaccine for the disease.
?Ebola HF is an extremely serious disease and UNICEF has taken immediate action to reduce the risks for children. ....

Last Saturday, three suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever were reported in Conakry. Since then, laboratory tests conducted by the Ministry of Health and Institut Pasteur have led to the conclusion that there was no confirmed case of Ebola HF in the capital.;):tiphat:http://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=186498#.UzMzbM46tvk

Re: Guinea - A hemorrhagic disease killed 61 people including 8 health workers in Forest Guinea - Ebola lab confirmed in 13 cases

Recognizing that containing an outbreak of Ebola may require several weeks or months (as seen in the past) may help to guide public reaction from an uncontrolled panic to a needed vigilance and implementation of the suggested measures to avoid infection, such as the contact with body fluids from ill patients and butchering and consuming meat from wild animals.

Secondly, wealthy world has little to feel scared by these outbreaks because one of the main causes is the state of the dilapidated health infrastructure in the sub-saharian Africa, the presence of many other infectious diseases, the striking poverty and the persistence of civil unrests, wars and violence.

If really interested in saving the world from exotic 'monsters' is to face the reality of the facts that where poverty and violence plague millions of people there will no any Assurance of safety for the rest even wealthy and fat nations.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever in Guinea (Situation as of 26 March 2014)

26 March 2014

The total number of suspected cases in the ongoing Ebola hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Guinea remain 86.

Two more cases died bringing total deaths to 62 (CFR: 72%).

The cases are spread across three districts in south east Guinea (Guekedou, Macenta, and Kissidougou districts).

Seven of the cases are currently undergoing treatment in isolation units in Guekedou district.

Investigations on reported cases in Liberia and Sierra Leone along the border with Guinea are ongoing.

Eleven of the reported cases have been confirmed by Institut Pasteur Lyon, France, Institut Pasteur (IP) Dakar, Senegal and Bernhard-Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine Hamburg, Germany using PCR test.

The MOH together with WHO and other partners continues to implement measures to control the outbreak and prevent further spread.

The MOH and MSF have established isolation facilities in Gu?k?dou district, and plans are underway to establish an additional isolation ward in Macenta district. WHO and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) have deployed experts to support operational response in the areas of: coordination; Infection Prevention and Control (IPC); surveillance and epidemiology; case management; public information and social mobilization; anthropological analysis; and logistics.

The necessary supplies and logistics required for supportive management of patients and all aspects of outbreak control are also being mobilized. The MOH is also preparing a request to the African Public Health Emergency Fund (APHEF) as well as to other potential donors to support outbreak response. APHEF supports timely deployment of rapid response teams during outbreaks and emergencies, and procurement and prepositioning of epidemic and emergency response supplies.

The Emerging and Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory Network (EDPLN) has been working with the Guinean VHF Laboratory in Donka, the Institut Pasteur in Lyon, the Institut Pasteur in Dakar, and the Kenema Lassa fever laboratory in Sierra Leone to make available appropriate Filovirus diagnostic capacity in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Institut Pasteur Dakar has already deployed a mobile laboratory team in Guinea, and a European Union Mobile Laboratory (EMLab) team with staff from Germany (Bernhard-Nocht Institute, Hambourg), France (Institut Pasteur Lyon) and Italy (National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Roma) will be deployed by 27 March 2014.

WHO does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied to Guinea in respect to this event.

CDC prepared to assist in outbreak of deadly Ebola virus in Africa

By Amanda Woerner /
Published March 27, 2014 /
FoxNews.com
...
?We have been in discussion about how we might be able to participate,? Dr. Barbara Knust, an epidemiologist in the viral special pathogens branch of the CDC, told FoxNews.com. ?We don?t have any people in the field as of yet, but the situation continues to change so every day there might be a change in that status. We have certainly been preparing and making sure we are ready in case the call goes out.?

Ebola virus is a rare, highly contagious and often deadly form of hemorrhagic fever -- and the current outbreak in Guinea is particularly unusual due to several factors, according to the CDC.

?[Zaire Ebola] has never been found outside of central Africa until this outbreak,? Knust said. ?Also, Guinea had never had an Ebola outbreak before and this is the furthest West we?ve had one. ?That?s another goal of the outbreak investigation, to try to investigate if we can trace back the initial spillover event from animal to person.?

As the situation in Africa continues to evolve, the CDC is prepared to open their laboratories to test specimens for evidence of the disease, if necessary. Currently, samples sent from Guinea are being tested in France.
