Press Press releases Avian influenza Cottbus Zoo
Avian influenza detected in Cottbus/Chóśebuz Zoo
- Published on January 2nd, 2024 - Press Release 001/2024

After three black-necked swans and an eider duck were found dead within a very short time in the Cottbus/Chóśebuz Zoo, five swans and a duck have so far been officially diagnosed with the avian influenza pathogen. Initially, the Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory detected the avian influenza virus of the H5N1 subtype. On December 31, 2023, the national reference laboratory, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), confirmed the result that it was the highly pathogenic variant of the virus.

The responsible veterinary office in the Spree-Neiße district has initiated all necessary measures. The epidemiological investigation is being carried out with the support of the country's animal disease control service. Further extensive samples are currently being taken from the population in order to be able to determine the possible extent of the spread. Since the birds are rare breeds and protected species, there is currently no precautionary killing of animals or the establishment of exclusion zones. The zoo will remain closed to visitors for the time being for further investigation and control of avian influenza.

Since October 2023, there has been a significant increase in the number of outbreaks in wild birds and domestic poultry flocks in Germany...

Avian influenza in the Vogelsberg districtDead greylag goose found at the Nidda dam

VOGELSBERG (ol). A dead greylag goose was found in the Vogelsberg district and was diagnosed with the highly contagious influenza virus (H5N1). The veterinary office is calling on poultry farmers to take urgent hygiene measures to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus. 28 cases of avian influenza have already been reported in Germany, although the risk of transmission to humans is considered to be low. Immediate registration with the veterinary office is important for all poultry farmers.

A greylag goose was found dead on the banks of the Nidda dam near Schotten and an influenza virus (H5N1) was detected through molecular biological tests in the state laboratory in Giessen. This was confirmed yesterday by the Friedrich Löffler Institute as the central reference laboratory, the Vogelsberg District Veterinary Office announced in a press release.

The H5N1 variant of the influenza virus causes birds to become ill with the highly contagious avian flu. Since it is probably a migratory bird, it is unclear where the goose became infected. However, it is very likely that she excreted and spread the virus until the end, they said.

Particularly in the Schotten area, but also in other areas in the Vogelsberg district, poultry farmers are therefore called upon to take hygiene measures when entering and leaving their poultry farms to prevent the introduction of the virus and its spread.

According to the national reference laboratory, the avian influenza virus is now endemic in Germany, which means that poultry farmers must expect the presence of the virus in the environment at any time. The danger is particularly great in winter when it is wet and cold, as the virus remains infectious in the environment for a particularly long time under these conditions. In the last four weeks alone, 28 cases of avian influenza were detected in Germany, 20 of which were in wild birds and eight in domestic poultry...
