Coronavirus: Germany reports 8 new infection cases

febr 27 2020

Eight more people were found to be infected with Covid-19 on Wednesday (Feb 26) across three German states, in addition to the two diagnosed cases on Tuesday, the authorities have confirmed.

The caseload includes one in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, three in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and four in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The German armed forces Bundeswehr said late on Wednesday that a soldier was diagnosed with the coronavirus and is being treated at Bundeswehr's central hospital in Koblenz.

The soldier was also the first confirmed case of Covid-19 infection in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The neighbouring state of Baden-Wuerttemberg also reported three more cases on Wednesday.

Two of the new infections in the town of Tuebingen were directly linked to a previously known patient from the Goeppingen district, who tested positive on Tuesday, according to the state ministry of health.

The third person from the district of Rottweil, though having no connection to the other three cases, had recently been to Italy.

Meanwhile, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, a sick couple are being treated at the University Hospital in Duesseldorf. The man was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Tuesday, followed by his wife on Wednesday.

The authorities from the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia announced late on Wednesday that in the course of checking the contact persons of the sick couple, three new cases of infections were just confirmed.

Rhine-Westphalia. District Administrator Stephan Pusch appealed to the sympathy of the people in the social networks. The couple with whom the new infections are connected are currently massively criticized because, among other things, they participated in a carnival event. "You deserve our sympathy, not reproaches," said the CDU politician. The 47-year-old husband is still in critical condition.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) informed at a press conference about the current findings on the corona virus. "We have to save time," said RKI President Lothar Wieler. What is special about the virus is the high rate of spread and the high number of serious illnesses.

Update of February 27, 2020 9:46: The coronavirus is back in Germany. Ten people in the Federal Republic of Germany have been infected with the virus since Tuesday evening . Experts also say that this number will continue to grow. This could also be due to the fact that one of the infected was at a carnival event attended by 300 people. The party guests must now spend 14 days in quarantine at home .

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany is at the beginning of a coronavirus epidemic after new cases sprung up that can no longer be traced to the virus’s original source in China, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Wednesday.

A total of five new cases of coronavirus in the west and south of Germany - taking the country’s total to around 20 - meant the disease appeared to be moving to a new phase, Spahn told a news conference, urging health authorities and employers to review their pandemic planning.

“The infection chains are partially no longer trackable, and that is a new thing,” Spahn said.

Thursday, February 27: Coronavirus in NRW: 20 infected in NRW confirmed, hundreds in quarantine

In North Rhine-Westphalia, 14 other people have been shown to be infected with the novel corona virus. The district of Heinsberg and the NRW Ministry of Health announced on Thursday evening that the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the district of Heinsberg had increased to 20.

Around 400 are under domestic quarantine. Among them are 300 people who attended a carnival session on February 15 in Gangelt in the Heinsberg district.

Thursday, February 27: Four more coronavirus cases in Baden-W?rttemberg

In Baden-W?rttemberg, four other people have been infected with the novel corona virus. The Ministry of Social Affairs announced on Thursday evening in Stuttgart. This means that the number of confirmed infections in the state has risen to eight.

Current information about the corona virus
In order to combat the corona epidemic, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health has set up a crisis team as set out in the federal pandemic plan. The aim is to protect the population as well as possible and to contain this epidemic as much as possible. The expertise of the other departments is also used. Already existing voting procedures would be institutionalized, said Health Minister Spahn. "The structure of the crisis team shows that we take the outbreak of the corona virus seriously and respond to the fact that the epidemic has now reached Germany," said Spahn.
...
The state does everything to protect its citizens in the best possible way. Fast, appropriate and effective. We have agreed that it is better to test for the virus once more than once too little. In any case, the money should not fail.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn
So far, it has been possible to isolate and treat infected people in Germany and to provide close contact to the contact persons. However, it is now unclear whether the infection chains can still be broken. The crisis team has therefore taken its first decisions. Air travelers from infection areas will in future have to fill out exit cards and provide information about their whereabouts. This no longer only affects air travelers from China, but also from Italy, Japan, South Korea and Iran. In future, travelers should also receive information not only on airplanes and airports, but also on trains and buses about how they can recognize the respiratory disease and how they can protect themselves against it.

The day before, the Minister of Health had met with representatives of doctors, pharmacists, health insurers, hospitals and nursing staff to discuss possible reactions to the outbreak of the virus.

Professional associations and organizations promised to provide their members and the public with even better information about the new type of respiratory disease in the future. Medical staff should also ask patients about suspected cases of travel to infection areas or contact with infected people. And for the population, the advice is: don't go to the emergency room every time you cough, but call the doctor if you get infected after a stay in infected areas or get in contact with the infected, flu, respiratory problems or fever.

The crisis team plans to procure medical protective equipment such as respiratory protection, gloves and the like. For this purpose, production capacities in Germany are to be increased and the resources of the European partners are pooled.

Contact persons of the infected would have to be identified and examined and then looked after in the home quarantine for the incubation period of two weeks. The German health system is well prepared for this situation, said the Minister of Health. However, it is also important that both medical personnel and the population follow the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute and the regional authorities.

Doctors are therefore encouraged to ask about suspected cases of possible contacts to infected people or trips to infection areas.

In the event of suspicion, citizens should call the doctor and discuss how to proceed. "We recommend that the population does not suspect a corona infection after every cough, but that they call their family doctor and clarify the treatment if they have a fever, cough or shortness of breath within 14 days after traveling to areas where infections have occurred develop, "said Spahn.

Spahn also ordered pilots to report the health of their passengers to the tower on even more flights than before before landing in Germany. In the future, this will also apply to flights from Iran, South Korea, Japan and also from Italy. So far this was only valid for direct flights from China.

In addition, Germany has contacted bus, train and airline companies to inform travelers about current developments and provide action instructions in the event that they notice symptoms.

At the European level, it is planned to procure protective equipment for medical personnel.

The health ministers of Italy, Austria, Croatia, Switzerland, Slovenia, France and Germany have agreed to inform travelers to and from Italy about the virus in the same way. The countries also want to exchange epidemiological data and information on the clinical management of the epidemic between the countries. The health ministers rejected general border closings. Whether large events have to be canceled should be checked on a case-by-case basis.

Current situation (02/27/2020 - 3 p.m.)
A total of 26 laboratory-confirmed cases of Covid-19 are known in Germany . Of the 16 cases that were known before February 25, 2020, 15 are already healthy and have been discharged from the clinic.

82,548 cases have been reported worldwide , of which 2,810 people have died.
