Germany saw the smallest increase in coronavirus deaths in 10 days and the total number of new infections slowed, offering a glimmer of hope for one of Europe’s worst-hit nations.

More than two weeks after the government ordered citizens to adhere to strict limits on public life, the number of fatalities rose to 2,736 on Saturday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. That’s an increase of 129 and the smallest since April 1.

The number of new coronavirus infections rose by 3,936, bringing the total to 122,171. It was the smallest gain in four days.

 All 16 federal states are affected. The incidence (cases per 100,000) of COVID-19 is highest in Bavaria (241), Baden-Wuerttemberg (213), Saarland (204) and Hamburg (199).

 Most cases (69%) are between 15 and 59 years old; men (51%) and women (49%) are almost equally affected.

 86% of deaths, but only 16% of all cases, occurred in persons aged 70 years or older.

 Reports on COVID-19 related outbreaks in nursing homes and hospitals are increasing. In some of these outbreaks, the number of deaths is relatively high.

There were 3,699 new infections in the 24 hours through Saturday, taking the total to 141,397, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The pace of increase in new cases had declined steadily for six days until Thursday from a peak of 5,633 on April 9.

The number of German fatalities rose by 300 to 4,352, while 83,114 people have recovered from the disease, more than in any other country, including China where the outbreak originated.
