Number of deaths exceeds 700

And again the number of reported corona cases has risen: currently to more than 67,000. The number of deaths has now exceeded 700 (as of March 31, 8pm).

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) also observed that the number of cases continues to increase. The pandemic will continue for months, predicts RKI boss Lothar Wieler (59).

Containment, protection of particularly vulnerable people and increased capacities remain important. A study found that only 41 percent of Germans thought Covid-19 was dangerous. This worries him that the disease cannot be taken seriously enough.

In Europe, while Italy and Spain are the worst hit countries with over 100,000 cases each, as of Friday, Germany has recorded 84,794 confirmed cases but has witnessed just 1,107 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The low mortality rate in Germany, at just over 1%, is far below its neighboring European countries, and this has been put down to Germany’s decision to implement widespread testing of people suspected of having the virus, as opposed to Italy or the U.K.’s decision to only test symptomatic cases.

Karl Lauterbach, a professor of health economics and epidemiology at the University of Cologne, and a politician in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany, told CNBC that Germany’s less severe experience of the pandemic so far was down to a handful of factors.

“I think so far we’ve been lucky because we were hit by the wave of new infections later than many other European countries, for example Italy, Spain and France,” he told CNBC Thursday.

11:23 Hamburg has reported a higher number of coronavirus recoveries than infections for the first time since the pandemic hit Germany. While a total of 3,217 people have tested positive for the disease in the city, 1,790 have recovered. That leaves 1,427 who still have coronavirus, or a difference of 300 people.

Hamburg residents were also met with a few other hopeful statistics: The basic reproduction number, which is the expected number of cases resulting from one single case, has declined, Hamburg mayor Peter Tschentscher told a state press conference on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the doubling time, or period after which the number of infected persons doubles, has increased to 14 days — a sign that the epidemic is spreading less aggressively, the Hamburger Morgenpost reported.

Germany currently has almost 108,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and over 2,000 related fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Health chiefs there have managed to keep the death rate relatively low, while the actual number of daily deaths actually seemed to be falling earlier this week. But hopes Germany had seen the worst of the outbreak have been dashed after 254 people were announced to have died today.

The number is the biggest daily jump the country has seen, taking the total death toll to 1,861.

The number of new confirmed cases in Germany also rose by 4,003 in the past 24 hours to 103,228 – climbing for the second straight day after four previous days of drops.

Germany's mortality rate now stands at around is 1.8 per cent – meaning approximately one death for every 56 confirmed cases.
