Germany: 2022/2023 Avian flu in poultry

40,000 parents are killed

A weak variant of avian influenza broke out in the Cuxhaven district

Avian influenza has broken out on a farm in the municipality of Wurster North Sea Coast.

Tue, October 31, 2023, 2:40 p.m

In the Cuxhaven district, a weakly pathogenic variant of avian influenza (LPAI) has been confirmed in the Wurster North Sea Coast community since the weekend. The NGW office reports that around 40,000 parent animals are affected.

After the LVI state laboratory had initially confirmed the AI-H5 virus, the pathogenicity was determined in the FLI reference laboratory. N1 could be excluded. The FLI is investigating which weakly pathogenic AI virus variant it is.

The killing and evacuation of the animal population was ordered. The district will set up an exclusion zone around the business. Since this is LPAI, we don't yet have any information about the size of the radius. The corresponding general order is being prepared by the district.

Please note the information, general orders and applications from the Cuxhaven district that will soon be posted online.

Due to the wild bird migration that is currently taking place, it can be seen again and again that sometimes large flocks stay in corn stubble fields, among other things, near poultry houses to take a break and graze. We would like to remind all poultry farmers to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures and hygiene rules. The avian influenza virus is not only spread by migratory birds, but is also present in domestic wild bird populations and can therefore pose a threat to our livestock.

Avian influenza | Lower Saxony
Avian influenza reaches hobby farming in Wurster North Sea coast
The Cuxhaven district has announced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype in a private poultry farm in the Wurster North Sea Coast community.
Published on
by DGS editorial team / source Cuxhaven district / TSIS / published on November 21st, 2023

In the Lower Saxony community of Wurster North Sea Coast, a restricted area was ordered after avian influenza was detected in a hobby farm.

The affected poultry farm, a hobby farm with fewer than 50 animals, was immediately classified as an epidemic stock after the positive virus was detected. As a preventive measure, a protection zone with a radius of at least 3 kilometers was established. The exact boundaries of the protection zone can be viewed online. At the same time, a surveillance zone with a radius of at least 10 kilometers was defined. Both zones together form the exclusion zone, within which partial housing for poultry farms is prohibited.

According to the general decree, poultry farmers are obliged to immediately report any suspicion of avian influenza disease. The detailed information and regulations can be found on the official website of the Cuxhaven district.

Start of the avian influenza season in Lower Saxony?

Lower Saxony plays a central role in the German poultry industry and is very important for the industry due to its agricultural structures. The state is home to numerous poultry farms, including both conventional and organic farming. The avian influenza outbreak is the first outbreak in a poultry farm in Lower Saxony this bird flu season, which again resulted in protective requirements.

According to the animal disease information system (TSIS), only infections in wild birds have been reported in Lower Saxony so far. At the end of October, the Cuxhaven district reported an outbreak of low-pathogenic avian influenza (NPAI) in a poultry farm. In this case, the district did not order a restricted zone.
