Germany: 2022/2023 Avian flu in poultry

Source: https://www.dgs-magazin.de/aktuelle...-hobbyhaltungen-in-brandenburg-ausbruch-.html

Avian influenza broke out in two hobby farms in Brandenburg
The avian influenza pathogen H5N1 was detected in a small farm in the district of Uckermark and another small farm in the district of Prignitz. Both animal keepers had previously visited the state association show of pedigree poultry breeders in Demmin (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).

by DGS editorial team / source Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Integration and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg / published on December 5th, 2022

The avian influenza pathogen was first detected in one of the exhibitor's poultry flocks. From there, the virus spread to several hobby farms in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and recently also in Schleswig-Holstein.

First, the Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory had detected the avian influenza virus of the H5N1 subtype. In the meantime, the national reference laboratory (Friedrich Loeffler Institute) has confirmed that it is the highly pathogenic variant of the virus.

All necessary measures to contain and combat avian influenza have been initiated. The stocks of the very small holdings were immediately blocked and sampled by the responsible veterinary authorities. A protection zone with a radius of three kilometers and a surveillance zone with a radius of ten kilometers have been set up in the district of Prignitz. The surveillance zone extends to the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin and the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The exact borders of the mentioned restricted areas are determined by the competent veterinary authorities.

The Ministry of Consumer Protection urges all poultry farmers to strictly comply with all biosecurity measures.

Poultry shows drive up avian influenza case numbers
As reported by the Friedrich Lofffler Institute (FLI) in its current risk assessment of the avian influenza situation in Germany, the number of outbreaks of avian influenza with the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus is increasing, particularly in small animal holdings in several federal states.
Published on
by DGS editorial team / source Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) / published on December 9th, 2022

Thuringia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are particularly affected

The reasons for this were at least three poultry exhibitions and the sale of pedigree poultry that took place there. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is particularly affected due to a breed and hobby poultry show in Demmin at the end of November, which led to scattering in the state itself, but also to Schleswig-Holstein and East Westphalia. Thuringia is another focus. These events do not appear to have ended and have already caused significant losses in the population of rare breeds of poultry.

In addition to its risk assessment of November 8, the Friedrich-Lofffler-Institut (FLI) once again expressly points out the high risk of entry of the avian influenza virus H5N1 through spread between holdings and spread via poultry shows. There remains a high risk of H5N1 avian influenza virus spreading in wild birds and transmission to poultry and other farmed birds. Regardless of the size of the poultry or bird farm, animal keepers should definitely check the biosecurity measures and improve them if necessary.

The Friedrich-Lofffler-Institut (FLI) advises in view of the epidemic events mentioned above to suspend the organization of further exhibitions of pedigree poultry until further notice.

A breeding stock with a small number of ducks and chickens is affected.

After a pedigree poultry exhibition in Saxony, there were first indications of an infection in the animals, it said. The veterinary office had detected the H5N1 virus in a subsequent investigation. According to a spokeswoman for the district, the affected animals must now be killed. Samples were also taken from two poultry farms in the immediate vicinity. The results of these tests are not yet available....

Bird flu broke out in the Lake District and in Western Pomerania

In the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, bird flu (H5N1) has been officially detected in a poultry stock. The district administration reports that around 8,000 animals are affected in the operation in the district of Mecklenburgische Kleinseenplatte, which must now be killed in an animal-friendly manner. Furthermore, a protection zone of three kilometers and a surveillance zone of ten kilometers will be set up around the excavation site. Because the bird flu pathogen has also been detected in a wing of a house in Heilgeisthof in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, a protection zone was also set up there. This also includes the city of Greifswald.

Bird flu in NRW: Avian influenza is also spreading in Coesfeld
Created: 02/21/2023, 9:32 p.m
By: Marvin K. Hoffmann

The bird flu H5N1 is spreading in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over 120,000 animals had to be killed in Paderborn. Now Coesfeld is also sounding the alarm about avian influenza.

Update from February 21, 9.39 a.m .: The avian influenza continues to spread in NRW. Now the district of Coesfeld is apparently also affected. "Last week, the avian influenza virus, also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza, was detected in a dead wild goose that was found at Klutensee in Lüdinghausen," said the district of Coesfeld. There are also other indications of "dead wild fowl" in the city of Lüdinghausen and in Rosendahl-Darfeld, among other places. “Three dead wild geese were also found at Vischering Castle; a carcass was sent directly to the laboratory to be examined for the pathogen," explained the district of Coesfeld.
Avian influenza arrived in Coesfeld: Dead wild goose discovered in Lüdinghausen (NRW).

All poultry farmers are now being asked to monitor the biosecurity measures they have taken to prevent the introduction of avian influenza virus into their own poultry stock. "In particular, it must be ensured that domestic poultry is fed and watered only in those places that are inaccessible to wild birds, but also that feed, bedding and other objects that the poultry can come into contact with are also kept out of the reach of wild birds." , the district of Coesfeld further announced. These measures would apply regardless of the size of the stock and thus also for smaller hobby keeping.

Since avian influenza is currently increasing in wild birds, the district veterinary office also recommends housing the poultry in closed stalls or protective devices for all poultry farms in the Coesfeld district.

First report from February 20th: Paderborn – The bird flu broke out in NRW. In Delbrück in the Paderborn district, the disease, which is very contagious for poultry, has been detected on a farm for rearing young hens. Tough measures had to be taken.

For fear of a further spread of bird flu, the State Ministry of Economics announced on Monday that around 122,000 animals from the stock had been killed by order of the district veterinary office - in technical jargon this means the animals were culled. The Federal Research Institute for Animal Health had therefore confirmed "the outbreak of the insidious animal disease". The Paderborn district, where there had already been a major outbreak of the disease at the end of 2021, also reacted promptly.

"Poultry farmers in Europe, in Germany and also in North Rhine-Westphalia are currently experiencing one of the strongest epidemics of avian influenza, also known as bird flu or avian influenza," it said in a statement. The district of Paderborn therefore took further measures to contain the avian influenza.
The Paderborn district tightened the containment measures after the bird flu outbreak

All necessary measures are currently being implemented by the district to prevent further contagion. "This also includes setting up a protection zone within a radius of three kilometers and a surveillance zone within a radius of ten kilometers around the affected company," said the Paderborn district. In these areas, particularly strict requirements would now apply to poultry farmers: “Poultry, poultry meat, eggs, animal feed, manure and bedding may not be taken out of or into stocks. Exceptions are possible and must be requested. In addition, there is an obligation to house poultry in both zones.”

The detected virus is extremely aggressive and causes great suffering for the animals affected, said Minister of Agriculture Silke Gorißen (CDU). In the winter months of 2022/23, the virus has so far been detected in more than 20 poultry farms in North Rhine-Westphalia. There are many farms with poultry farming in East Westphalia.

The virologist Stephan Ludwig from Münster recently warned in an interview with the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" of the spread of bird flu and the resulting dangers for humans. In his eyes, the risk of transmission of the H5N1 bird flu virus to humans is increasing.

Chickens and geese died of avian influenza in the Rottenburg area
Editorial office Landshut district, 22.02.2023 - 4:11 p.m

The suspected case has been confirmed: A case of HPAIV H5N1, or known as avian influenza or bird flu, was found on a poultry farm in the municipality of Rottenburg. Chickens and geese were kept on the affected farm, most of which have already died from the pathogen itself.

In order to contain the risk of infection, the state veterinary office is setting up a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers (most of the municipality of Rottenburg), surrounded by a surveillance zone with a ten-kilometer radius (parts of the municipality of Rottenburg, the municipalities of Hohenthann, Pfeffenhausen, Neufahrn and Weihmichl, as well as parts of the rural districts Kelheim, Regensburg and Straubing-Bogen). In this area, husbandry, trade and transport restrictions for resident poultry farmers will come into play. These apply until further notice.

Outbreak of avian influenza in Haselünne - subtype H5N1 in laying hen farm - protection and surveillance zone established
February 27, 2023

meppen An outbreak of bird flu was detected in a poultry flock in the town of Haselünne. On Saturday (February 25th) the official findings of the Friedrich-Löffler-Institute were available: It is the highly pathogenic influenza A virus of the subtype H5N1. The district of Emsland immediately took the necessary measures to combat animal diseases and, among other things, defined special restriction zones by general decree, which will come into force on February 28th.

The infection in the affected flock of laying hens with 23,400 animals was detected during self-checks by the operator and the veterinarian before official samples confirmed this suspicion. In coordination with the responsible authorities of the state and in compliance with animal welfare regulations, the Emsland district already carried out the appropriate measures to clear the stock and culling the animals at the weekend. The affected facility is currently being cleaned and disinfected.

Avian influenza in Schleswig-Holstein: detection in poultry farming in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg

07/10/2023 News Created by | Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Areas, Europe and Consumer Protection

In the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, avian influenza was found in a commercial goose farm after the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed an infection with the avian influenza virus of the H5N1 subtype on Friday evening. The legally prescribed humane killing of all remaining geese on the farm and the professional disposal of the killed and dead animals has already taken place.

A restricted zone will be set up around the excavation site, consisting of a protection zone of at least three kilometers and a surveillance zone of at least ten kilometers. There are strict legal requirements for poultry farming in the exclusion zone. These include, among other things, a stall ban and a ban on the movement of live poultry. Further information is provided by the district of Schleswig-Flensburg.

Against the background of the tense avian influenza situation worldwide - the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Areas, Europe and Consumer Protection (MLLEV) once again urgently appeals to all keepers to comply with the country-wide biosecurity measures to protect domestic poultry and reminds of the November 23, 2021 issued nationwide binding general decree on biosecurity measures for all private and commercial poultry farmers.

The general decree stipulates, among other things, that special protective clothing including separate footwear must be worn in the holding areas. All poultry holdings must also set up disinfection mats or tubs for shoe disinfection in front of the entrances to the stables. Persons must wash and disinfect their hands immediately before entering the facility. Means of transport such as vehicles and containers must be cleaned and disinfected immediately after each use. The intake of poultry via markets, stock exchanges or mobile trading is also prohibited. In order to avoid contact between wild birds and domestic poultry, wild birds should be kept away from poultry holdings as far as possible or incentives for wild birds to visit the holdings should be eliminated. This applies in particular to free-range husbandry who are urged to review and, if necessary, improve the location of the poultry feeders. The Avian Influenza Ordinance contains mandatory requirements in this regard. According to this, poultry may only be fed in places that are inaccessible to wild birds. In addition, no surface water may be used for watering the animals, to which wild birds also have access. Feed, bedding and other items that the poultry may come into contact with must be kept out of the reach of wild birds. It is important to be vigilant and to consistently implement all operational biosecurity measures to protect your own animals. In the event of increased animal losses in the herd or clinical signs that indicate avian influenza, a veterinary examination is also required. This is the only way to clarify an unclear disease process in the stock and to rule out the presence of an infection with avian influenza viruses.

Background:

The highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as avian influenza, is an animal disease that must be reported and controlled by the state, which can lead to massive deaths in kept birds and wild birds after sometimes severe symptoms. Since October 2021, Schleswig-Holstein has been affected by persistent avian influenza, including in wild birds, which, like in the previous year, continues over the summer. Since the beginning of the year, the virus with the subtype H5N1 has been detected by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in 105 samples from wild birds from all districts of Schleswig-Holstein and the independent cities of Neumünster and Lübeck. Additional samples are in confirmatory testing. The range of species affected in 2023 currently primarily includes various breeding colonies and seabirds.

In domestic poultry, six outbreaks of avian influenza have been officially detected in Schleswig-Holstein in 2023. In addition to the current outbreak in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, three small farms in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district and two commercial laying hen farms in the Ostholstein and Dithmarschen districts were affected.

Low-pathogenic avian influenza detected in the Cuxhaven district

INFECTION PRESSURE ON DOMESTIC POULTRY IS HIGH DUE TO AUTUMN BIRD MIGRATION - MAINTAIN BIOSECURITY ON FARMS

Hanover . Low pathogenic avian influenza (NPAI), also known as low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), was detected in a farm with so-called fattening grandparents in the Cuxhaven district. This has now been shown by studies by the national reference laboratory of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI). A farm with around 39,000 animals is affected. Infections of poultry with low-pathogenic avian influenza A viruses often have mild clinical manifestations or even have no symptoms. This is the first case of domestic poultry in Lower Saxony since June 2022. The Cuxhaven district has put in place the necessary protective measures and is carrying out investigations in surrounding businesses; these have already been informed about this by the responsible veterinary office.

The last detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was in February this year. In principle, it cannot be ruled out that NPAI viruses mutate into HPAI viruses. In the current risk assessment, the FLI classifies the risk of a flare-up of HPAI avian influenza in the wild bird population and the reintroduction of the virus through autumnal bird migration as high. The avian influenza virus HPAIV H5N1 continues to be widespread in the wild bird population, particularly in the coastal areas of Lower Saxony. This means that the infection pressure on domestic poultry is correspondingly high. Protecting poultry farms from wild birds is therefore a protective measure that can prevent domestic poultry from becoming infected with avian influenza.

In this context, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture reminds that the biosecurity measures in the companies must be strictly adhered to and, if necessary, improved. Animal owners who notice any abnormalities such as reduced food and water intake of the animals or other clinical symptoms should immediately contact the responsible veterinary office.
