Guess this is the same species which was infected with Reston-Ebola in the Philipines. (crab eating)

Food Habits

Long-tailed macaques are omnivores, and exploit many different food types, reflecting the diversity of habitats they can utilize. The average length of feeding bouts is 18.3 minutes. There may be on average of twenty bouts per day. They eat a wide variety of foods such as fruits, crabs, flowers, insects, leaves, fungi, grasses, and clay. Clay may be eaten for the potassium found in it, although the potassium levels in the clay are low. However, 96% of the feeding time per day is spent eating fruit. Some limited observations suggest that long-tailed macaques select fruit based on ripeness, which is based on color.

Snip from a long article, some explanation on H5N1 bij dr. Nidom

Chairman Peneliti Bird Flu University of Airlangga, Dr drh C.A. Nidom Ms mentioned although the number of casualties died in Indonesia most in the world, but, the Indonesian researchers had never carried out the autopsy to the sufferers.

So, in Indonesia still could not be known, the diagnosis that was brought forward by the Thai researcher true or not
. According to the Thai researcher, initially, the virus H5N1 entered through the previous nose crept into the upper respiratory tract.

Afterwards in the interior lungs, because of the characteristics of the aggressive virus, he could take a short cut to two so as easily entered blood vessels. From there flowed all through the organ in the body so as to be able to result in the multi-organ dysfunctions or other organ damage. Apart from the lungs, the other organ like the heart also was found by this virus.
Continued Nidom, when being permitted, we could get anywhere the location of the spreading of this virus.

So, for the medical field will be known treatment what was exact for the patient. ‘’ While for the researcher, could be known by the process of the mutation of this virus ,” he revealed. Nidom that also the Chairman the team of the researcher Collaborative Research Center For Emerging and Re- emerging Infectious Diseases (CRC-ERID) Jepang–Indonesia this added the matter that most was feared by the researchers was the mutation of this virus.

When being found by the virus H5N1 that could live and develop on the respiratory tract also was found on the heart or the other organ in the condition hidup. then that became the question, was whether the mutation of this virus was temporary or was permanent.

” If this change was permanent, then could become the new spreading model that was not difficult to be detected again, ” he stressed.

Apart from knew from where the arrival, continued he, that important was to learn the spread method of the virus and immediately prevented him minimising his spreading. The virus H5N1 could spread through air from the waste of the animal that contained the virus.

There this virus could survive for 7 days. While in the cold temperature like this rainy season, this virus could remain till 1 month. ” We did not know, this virus adhered anywhere. So as to be able to be inhaled by humankind. Moreover, this virus could be flown to the best of 1 km ,” he said. (airborn, ed)

So, he added, the government must carry out the prevention. With relocation the place of poultry livestock breeding and relocation of the poultry butchering that in accordance with the standard of the health.

Moreover, the government could make the work program of the mass service in the traditional market every week.

With the existence of the work of the mass service, was expected by the cleanliness of the traditional market to be able to be awakened ,” he said.

Apart from spreading out the work of the mass service, he continued, the government could also carry out spraying disinfekta so as germs, the bacteria and the virus that were not yet lost could die.

ANALYSIS: fly and Bird Flu ===> By: Prof. drh R Wasito MSc PhD

09/02/2009 08:35:41
"Fly, enter the year 2009 should diwaspadai". This is not a statement of the author, but it is one of the statements important oracle famous woman Mama Lauren. Emphasized that the health if we dally, is the disease a new bird flu and all kinds of flu that can be transmitted through the fly in the year 2009 (Kartini, No. 2234, 25 December until 8 January 2009, p. 10).
Truly great terawang 2009 Mama Lauren is. At the beginning of the year 2009 this course, at least, bird flu has been merebak in Berbah, Sleman, Yogyakarta. In the year 2008 in Sleman have 1735 cases of bird flu (KR, 4/2/09). It seems, the problem of bird flu in Indonesia, the more complex. Look innovation research on the fly and the bird flu, which continues to grow based on the findings of the research of Professor Hastari Wuryastuti and Tim, the re-issue terawangan Mama Lauren concerning the importance fly as a carrier bird flu in Indonesia. The fact, that based on the analysis of sequencing and phylogenetic genes HA, that, isolat avian influenza virus (AIV) from fly home (Musca domestica) has a relationship that of a very closely with the isolat AIV from poultry in Indonesia. Results analysis sequencing and phylogenetic genes NP prove that isolat AIV from fly home has a gap 12 basa with isolat AIV from poultry in Indonesia. Analysis of phylogenetic indicate that isolat AIV from fly home closer to AIV groove of Hong Kong, Korea and Vietnam.
Importance fly this, also reflected in the various diseases in animals and humans related to the fly, such as: Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Escherichia, Enterococcus, Chamydia, transmission of food poisoning, typhoid fever, dysentry, tuberculosis, Anthrax, aphthalmia and parasitic worms. Must be recognized that the eradication fly not become the basis for health care environment and has not been a concern of communities in Indonesia. Look at how many fly swarm and fly around us.
Globally enter the year 2009, in the middle of the disease in livestock and poultry that is already infecting in Indonesia, efforts penanggulangannya the digembar rant by the government so far have not been effective. Again, a new society subside, at finding the meat waste which he said first dikomersialisasikan to feed pigs, but at the time of food crisis, sold for consumption of humans. At the almost same time, Ironically again, in Indonesia as a country agrarian, many found, especially in big cities people memunguti waste-waste of fruits and vegetables. This is still mending because the recognition of the collector, only consumed for the family itself. But, imagine, if later, vegetable and fruit waste is cooked and flavored the next dikomersialkan to the public, as well as with what happens to the relatives proximity, that is meat (read: meat waste).
What food Indonesia easy teetery, subject to so appear more distended hungry and forgery of meat, vegetable waste, fruit waste, meat waste and meat expired and meat glonggongan?. That's about which the complaint (read: a question) people lay Indonesia at this time. Complaint that is almost the same always happens every year. If at the beginning of the government of SBY-JK are Dicanangkan revitalization of agriculture in a sustainable, properly cases of meat glonggongan, meat waste, and also edema hungry mainly due to the low consumption of food of animal protein can diminimalisir or even will not ever happen. The emergence of cases of milk imported bermelamin, milk, false, eggs, fake, and the various forms of meat fresh and processed to date to complete the problems in the field of health and agriculture that are not rational. Failure revitalization of agriculture, would be not just hydropic hunger, but also accelerate the senescent (in adults) and can also disrupt the optimization grow the flower children and the function of the brain that may never terpikirkan earlier by the government.
In situations that have been mentioned above, the necessary creativity for people to help preserve the health environment of Indonesia. Of course the government should start in the initiate follow-evident in the field with full of creativity and intelligent. Hopefully the health and care of the environment we are better in the year 2009 and years with the government and the community that mutual cooperation creative, productive, innovative and efficient for the benefit of us all.

Poultry Smugglers Adding to Bali Bird Flu Fears

Poultry smugglers in Bali are putting people?s lives at risk by importing chickens that may be infected with bird flu, an official said on Wednesday.
?It?s frustrating to have to repeat this to these people. They only care about profits and give no thought to the environment and health issues,? said Dewa Made Ngurah, the head of the animal husbandry, marine and fisheries agency in the provincial capital, Denpasar.
Ngurah said that a 2005 bylaw stipulated that the unregulated flow of poultry in and out of the province was prohibited. Poultry is still successfully smuggled in, however, largely because effective patrols are too costly to operate, he said. Those caught face hefty fines and even jail sentences.
Following a suspected case of avian influenza in Badung district on the resort island, local authorities on Wednesday conducted a drive to disinfect live poultry markets in nearby Denpasar to stop the spread of the virus.
Nguarh called the drive a precautionary measure. ?We don?t want to take any risks when it comes to bird flu,? he said.
The agency sprayed disinfectant in Satrio and Sanglah markets, the two busiest poultry trading areas in Denpasar, Ngurah said, adding that the local administration had earmarked Rp 122 million ($10,370) for disinfectant and an additional Rp 83 million to treat suspected victims.
Ngurah also said that the agency would more tightly supervise the transportation of poultry in border areas to stem smuggling. To step up bird flu prevention measures, he said the agency had urged local owners of chicken farms and slaughter houses to spray disinfectant on their own.
?We can help by providing the disinfectant, but it would be much more efficient if poultry owners would spray the farm themselves,? Ngurah said.
After random testing last week in Badung showed one in every five birds to carry the H5N1 virus, authorities culled 133 chickens from Jagapati Abiansemal village. Ngurah said his agency was investigating to find out whether the infected poultry had been from local stock or smuggled in from another province.
A small outbreak of the virus struck the district in 2007, killing two residents

Re: General Indonesian News - 27 September 2008 +

We have the shelf life extension program, which extends the life of Tamiflu by 2 years.

From my understanding, and anyone with different info can feel free to correct me, it just involves testing the drug prior to the expiration date to make sure it's still effective.

Have there been any tests showing it degrades after the ex. date? If not, and if the Tami in Indonesia has been properly stored, it still should be effective.

Journalist?s Violent Death Confirmed by Autopsy

Autopsy results have confirmed that Anak Agung Prabangsa, a journalist from Bali Island, died as a result of a violent attack against him, a forensic doctor said late on Monday.

The body of Prabangsa, a journalist from Radar Bali, a newspaper belonging to the Jawa Pos Group, was found floating at Bias Tugel Beach, west of Padangbai Harbour, on Monday, almost a week after he disappeared.

?We confirm that the victim died as a result of violence,? said Dudut Rustiyadi, the forensic team coordinator at Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

According to Dudut, the two-hour autopsy revealed that the victim?s head had signs of having been hit by a dull object and his right wrist was broken, as if he had been holding onto something when he fell or was pushed into the sea.

Results also showed that he had salt water in his digestive system, indicating that he had been alive when he entered the water.

Comr. Gde Sugianyar, Bali?s police spokesman, said police had not yet determined the cause of death and were still collecting evidence, including data from the victim?s cellphone to identify who Prabangsa had last contacted before he went missing.

The police were also questioning several witnesses, including the victim?s family members and work colleagues, he said.

?We will investigate any questionable facts and alibis, and hopefully we will have the result in two days,? Sugianyar said.

Justin Herman, the director of Radar Bali, told the Jakarta Globe that it had emerged that Prabangsa had been reporting on sensitive issues, and two weeks ago had received threatening calls and text messages on his cellphone.

?However, we cannot conclude yet if the threats and the reports were linked to his death,? he said.

Journalists condemned the death of one of their own.

?We urge the police to investigate this mysterious case,? Bambang Wiyono, the head of the Bali chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists, or AJI, said.

Leo Batubara, the deputy head of the Press Council, said that it was unclear whether the journalist?s cause of death had been related to his work

?I urge the police to investigate the case, whether it is linked to any journalistic work,? Leo said, adding that if there was any connection, it would demonstrate that press freedom was still under threat.

Nezar Patria, AJI?s chairman, said the 1999 press law protected journalists in carrying out their reporting duties.

?We always carefully look into a case if there is a death among journalists,? Nezar said, adding that the AJI would become seriously involved in the investigation if it proved to be linked to journalism work.
