Behaviour change

The community phase is the most dreadful period of an epidemic. It is during this time that the virus actively circulates between people (men, women, young people and children) in families, homes, administrations, public places, transport (taxi, bus), shops. etc.

To curb the speed of spread of the virus, changing our behavior and our habits becomes more than essential. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, our new way of life must include the systematic wearing of masks, social distancing, greeting each other without shaking hands, washing hands regularly with soap and water or a hydro-alcoholic gel. It is only by adopting this new way of life that we will be able to stop the Covid-19 pandemic in our country.

Invitation to screening

Apart from the barrier measures, we invite the population to take the screening test in the various dedicated sites. Knowing your status early by doing the screening test is essential to break the spread of Covid-19 and for rapid management in case of positivity.

Epidemiological situation

Of the 213 samples taken, we recorded 41 new Covid-19 positive cases, distributed as follows:

In Franceville: 28 new cases out of the 157 samples taken, for a total of 58 positive cases out of the 297 samples taken;
At Libreville: 13 new cases out of the 56 samples taken.

In total, there are 661 reported Covid-19 positive cases, including 110 cured and 8 deaths.

In terms of treatment, we have eight (8) resuscitation patients, three (3) of whom are under artificial ventilation.

The death was registered at the Libreville University Hospital. A 56 year old lady, known hypertensive.

Gabon recorded a new Covid-19 death on Monday, 141 new positive cases and 17 healings.

The total assessment is 802 cases positive for the coronavirus including 127 cures and 9 deaths.

DIG / The state of the Covid-19 health response in Gabon was the subject of a lively press conference on May 12, 2020 at the Arambo building in Libreville, by the spokesperson of the Comit? de piloting the watch and response plan against the Coronavirus epidemic (Copil), Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong.

In total, out of the 5,530 samples taken since the start of the crisis, there are 863 positive cases, 137 cures and 9 deaths.

"The national response to the Coronavirus has been articulated in different phases. The first phase consisted in slowing down the massive importation of the virus into Gabon with the establishment of health systems at the border level, the establishment of institutional bodies, the preparation of health professionals, the purchase of equipment, 'identification of the sites of care in Libreville and in the provinces, and the identification of the sites of containment,' said the spokesman of the Copil.

Today, Gabon is in phase 4, which is to avoid the generalization of the epidemic.

This will consist, said the Copil spokesperson, of increasing awareness of the barrier measures, the extension of the Covid-19 screening sites, and the outpatient management of simple cases.

The results of the two months of the Covid-19 pandemic in Gabon yesterday showed us the strong progression of the epidemic in our country, with 5 affected provinces (Estuaire, HautOgoou?, Moyen Ogoou?, Ogoou?-Maritime and Woleu Ntem). In Libreville, the 6th arrondissement is the most affected, in the Moyen Ogoou?, the epicenter of the epidemic is the city of Bifoun. In Franceville, the starting point of the epidemic was at the Amissa Bongo Regional Hospital Center (CHR), in Port-Gentil, the barge off Port-Gentil and in Bitam the students who were returning from Cameroon.

The same assessment revealed to us yesterday that all strata of the population are affected: men, women and children; that the most contaminated age group is that of 30-59 years old; and that high blood pressure (hypertension), the combination of hypertension and diabetes are the main risk factors for this disease, which can lead to worsening or even death.

Epidemiological situation

Regarding the evolution of the Coronavirus at the national level, we recorded 141 new positive cases out of the 886 samples distributed as follows:

In Libreville, 101 new cases out of 541 samples among which 15 compatriots repatriated out of 62, for a total of 836 positive cases;

In Franceville, 36 new cases out of 280 samples, for a total of 137 positive cases;

In Lambar?n?, 4 new cases out of 65 samples, for a total of 11 positive cases.

There are no new cases in Bifoun, Port-Gentil and Bitam.

In terms of care, we have recorded:

25 new healings, for a total of 162 people healed;

161 hospitalized patients and 13 people in intensive care including 3 on artificial respiration.

In total, out of the 6,183 samples taken, we have 1,004 positive tested cases including 162 cured and 9 deaths. 161 patients are hospitalized, including 13 people in intensive care.

Coronavirus: Gabon deplores its 10th death and 1,104 cases positive for Covid-19!

After crossing the threshold of 1,000 pandemic cases yesterday, Gabon recorded a new death from the coronavirus. The coronavirus, which reached new records during this 10th week, is spreading rapidly in the provinces of Haut-Ogoou? and Moyen-Ogoou? where the cities of Mvengu?, Moanda, Mounana and Makouk? are now affected. Only 20 new healings were recorded yesterday, bringing the toll to 1,104 confirmed cases including 10 deaths and 182 healings.

The coronavirus pandemic is in full swing in Gabon despite the response strategies put in place by the authorities to deal with it. Yesterday, 100 new cases were tested positive for Covid-19. This progression is also accompanied by death. On Wednesday evening, a 70 year old hypertensive patient admitted to hospital for respiratory distress died there. After 11 days in hospital, after deteriorating health conditions, she was transferred to intensive care before dying on the night of May 13.

The other fact detailed yesterday by the health authorities is the spread of the pandemic in Haut-Ogoou?. In addition to Franceville, it is Mvengu?, Moanda and Mounana who are won by the new coronavirus. But also in the Moyen-Ogoou? with a first case at Makouk?. Of the 100 new cases announced on Thursday, 28 are listed in these Altogov? localities, namely: Franceville (21 new cases), Mvengue (3 new cases), Moanda (2 new cases), Mounana (1 new case). The rest, 72 new cases are located in Libreville where 309 tests out of the 434 carried out yesterday in the country.

To explain this contagion in the cities of the hinterland, the health authorities indicated that "This phenomenon is in particular related to the multiple movements of the populations in a context of community transmission". The epidemiological assessment as of May 14 is thus 1,104 cases positive for Covid-19 including 10 deaths and 182 cures. Note that 158 ​​people are still currently hospitalized in the country including 11 people in intensive care (2 of them are in serious condition and placed on artificial respiration).

Learn to live with Coronavirus

Protect the most vulnerable

As you know, 80% of people with Covid-19 are healthy carriers because they do not have the disease, 15% have mild symptoms and 5% develop severe forms that can go as far as death. In short, 95% of people with Coronavirus recover from this disease.

It is not a disease which is systematically fatal but which can worsen in people who are over 65 and those with comorbidities such as high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, asthma and obesity.

Epidemiological situation

In terms of epidemiological surveillance, out of the 433 samples taken, we recorded 105 new positive cases distributed as follows:
- In Libreville, 103 positive cases out of 400 samples, for a total of 1,011;
- In Franceville, 1 case out of 26 samples, for a total of 159 positive cases;
- In Lambar?n? 1 case out of 7 samples, for a total of 12 positive cases.

However, it should be noted that in the Haut-Ogoou? province, outside of Franceville, there are 3 cases in Mvengu?, 2 cases in Moanda and 1 case in Mounana.

Regarding treatment, we recorded 37 new healings, for a total of 219 people healed, 125 hospitalized, including 11 in intensive care.

6 out of 9 provinces affected

The Coronavirus epidemic in our country is experiencing an increasing evolution, resulting in the appearance of a high number of new cases and at the same time a progressive migration in the majority of the provinces. Today, 6 out of 9 provinces are affected by this pandemic.

Tribute to our heroes

Medically, since the start of the epidemic, healthcare professionals have been courageous and dedicated and continue to fight despite the large influx of Covid-19 patients in our hospitals. We must salute our brave heroes.

Establishment of 20 outpatient treatment centers

As part of the decongestion of hospitals, we have set up since last Monday, 20 integrated outpatient treatment centers for the care of asymptomatic and pauci-symptomatic patients. This made it possible to take care of 201 people affected by Covid-19 on an outpatient basis.

This new ambulatory strategy will improve the management of Covid-19 patients. From now on, Covid-19 healthy carriers will no longer be hospitalized, only symptomatic patients will be able to be admitted to health facilities.

In terms of epidemiological surveillance, of the 345 samples taken, we recorded 65 new positive cases, for a total of 1,567 cases tested positive. The new cases are distributed as follows:
- Estuary: 52 new cases out of 175 samples, or 39 cases from mass screening and 13 cases from active screening, for a total of 1,219 positive cases;
- Haut-Ogoou?: 13 new positive cases in Franceville out of 170 samples, or 270 positive cases in Franceville, for a total of 301 positive cases;

Regarding care, we have:
- 86 people hospitalized;
- 6 people in intensive care;
- 47 healings including 7 in Franceville for a total of 365 people healed.
In total, out of the 8,622 samples taken, we have 1,567 positive cases, 365 cured, 86 hospitalized, 6 people in intensive care and 12 deaths.

Gabon recorded 37 cases of healing on May 22. This brings to 402 the number of people healed in the country which has simultaneously registered 161 new infections and no deaths on the same date.

In Gabon, the number of confirmed Covid-19 positive cases continues to be reported per hundred. If on March 20 the Steering Committee of the monitoring and response plan against the Coronavirus epidemic (Copil) notified 65 new cases out of 345 tests carried out, on May 22 these figures exploded. According to the Copil, out of 499 samples, 161 tests were positive. This increased the number of Covid-19 positive cases to date from 1567 to 1728.

Of the 161 new cases registered in two of the six provinces affected by the pandemic, 158 are in the province of Estuary. According to information from Copil, 479 samples were taken and 153 cases came from mass screening and the other 5 from active screening. This brings to 1,377 the number of positive cases in this province as of May 22. In the province of Moye-Ogoou?, 3 new cases were declared positive out of 17 tests carried out. A total of 39 positive cases in this province including 22 in Lambar?n?.

If the Copil indicates that on May 22, 82 people were hospitalized against 86 to May 20, 9 people in intensive care against May 6 to 20, it also announces 37 new healings against 47 to May 20. This increases the number of people healed from 365 to 402 on May 22. "In total, out of the 9,121 samples taken, we have 1,728 cases tested positive (18%), 402 cured, 82 hospitalized, 9 people in intensive care and 12 deaths," summed up the spokesman for the Copil, who calls for respect barrier gestures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

Covid-19 Patient Stigma

The perception of the Coronavirus in our society by some of our compatriots can jeopardize the efforts of national response against this pandemic. Coronavirus is not a disease of shame, a curse, a divine punishment, or a curse
thrown, nor a night rifle.

Covid-19 is a respiratory disease caused by a virus called Sars-cov 2. It is spread by respiratory and salivary droplets emitted by a person infected with Covid-19. It is a well-known mode of transmission of the virus with simple prevention means such as wearing a compulsory mask, physical distancing and regular washing of hands with soap or hydro-alcoholic gel.

Indeed, a large number of our compatriots hide in their homes because of fear, even shame, to take the Covid-19 test. This phenomenon is linked to the stigmatization of infected people on the one hand and the denial of the disease on the other using traditional and spiritual treatments. This leads to late treatment in health facilities and worsening of the disease.

In terms of epidemiological surveillance, of the 787 samples taken, we recorded 206 new positive cases, for a total of 1,934 cases tested positive. The new cases are distributed as follows:
- Estuary: 180 new cases out of 591 samples from mass screening, i.e.
a total of 1,557 positive cases;
- Haut-Ogoou?: 21 new cases out of 167 samples, including 18 positive in Franceville out of 136 samples, 2 positive cases in Moanda out of 5 samples and 1 positive case in Mvengue out of 26 samples, for a total of 322 positive cases;
- Moyen-Ogoou?: 4 new positive cases including 2 in Lambar?n? on 15 samples and 2 in Bifoun on 5 samples, for a total of 43 positive cases;
- Woleu-Ntem: 1 new case out of 9 samples, for a total of 6 positive cases.

Regarding care:
- 93 people hospitalized;
- 10 people in intensive care;
- 57 healings, making a total of 459 people healed.
In total, out of 9,908 samples, we count 1,934 positive cases (18%), 459 cured, 93 hospitalized, 10 people in intensive care and 12 deaths.

Covid-19: 2 new deaths linked to Coronavirus this Monday in Gabon

Gabon has recorded two new deaths linked to Covid-19 including one in Franceville and another in Libreville, announced Monday the spokesman of the Covid-19 pandemic steering committee, doctor Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong in a point of daily press.

The death recorded in Franceville was that of a 51-year-old lady who worked for the Ogoou? mining company (COMILOG). Placed in isolation on May 20 at Moanda Hospital, she tested positive on May 21 and hospitalized in Franceville on May 23 before dying on May 25 in the early hours of the morning.

The second death was that of a 54-year-old man who died at Libreville University Hospital. He was known to have hypertension and diabetes.

Gabon also recorded 201 new cases of contamination and 103 new healings, which brings to 2,131 the total number of people tested positive, including 14 deaths.

The average of 100 contaminations per day remained effective for this 57th daily press point held by the spokesperson for the Steering Committee of the monitoring and response plan against the Coronavirus epidemic in Gabon (Copil-Coronavirus), Dr. Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong during which he once again returned to the figures of a new wave of contamination which every day, increases the balance sheet of the pandemic in Gabon.

With regard to the figures relating to the massive and active samples of today, Dr. Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong indicated that “out of the 656 samples taken today, we recorded 103 new cases, for a total of 2238 cases positive for Covid-19 in Gabon. For distribution, the Estuary records 90 new cases, all resulting from mass screening. In the Haut-Ogoou? province, we recorded 4 new cases out of 79 samples taken, including 3 in Franceville and one case in Moanda. As for the province of Moyen-Ogoou?, we have 8 new positive cases ”.

In the same vein, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health has informed the public that the city of Oyem has now registered its first person to test positive for coronavirus. "In Woleu-Ntem province, we have registered the first case in the city of Oyem," he said.

On treatment, the vice-president of the steering committee for the watch and response plan against the Coronavirus epidemic in Gabon indicated that he had "123 people hospitalized, 11 in intensive care, 31 patients cured",

As of Friday, May 29, there were 182 new cases of infection compared to 112 for Thursday, May 28. For the Copil-Coronavirus spokesperson, Dr. Guy-Patrick Obiang Ndong, this drop in the number of cases on Weekends is due to the fact that the populations are not tested enough during this period of the week.

Gabon currently has exactly 2,655 cases of infection and the virus is beginning to spread to all provinces of the country. If the counter now marks high numbers of cases of contamination compared to March, the Copil said nevertheless observe a drop in new cases of infection as the weekend approaches.

"For some time now, we have noticed that when we enter the weekend phase, there is a drop in activity. Many people do not come to be tested and this is what can justify the fact that very often during the weekends there is always a drop in screening activities in the different care sites and screening sites ”, a explained Dr. Guy-Patrick Obiang Ndong.

Recall that last Saturday, May 30, during his daily press briefing, the spokesperson for the Copil-Coronavirus announced 42 new contaminations out of 289 samples taken. Monday, May 25, Gabon crossed the symbolic bar of 2000 positive cases by registering 201 new infections. On Thursday, there were 112 cases against 182 cases for Friday, May 29, 2020.

It must be said that the figures recorded last Saturday were rather low compared to those recorded during the other days of the same week. However, this observation by the Copil-Coronavirus spokesperson is not entirely convincing. We still remember that on Saturday May 23, 2020, Gabon recorded 206 contaminations out of 787 samples taken. A very high figure, like that of Saturday, May 16 which posted 111 new positive cases.

"Critical phase of the epidemic
The period we are currently going through is the most critical of the epidemic, given the high number of positive cases and the large number of people with fever, cough or breathing difficulties in public and private health facilities. This critical phase of the epidemic could last several days, weeks, or even months depending on the behavior of the population.
This is why, each of us must be an ambassador for the fight against Covid-19 by raising awareness of the barrier measures, those close to us, our family, professional or community, to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus in our country. We must be vigilant, self-monitor, raise awareness, educate and bring to reason all those people who are reluctant to comply with barrier measures.

Epidemiological situation
Of the 1,143 samples taken, we recorded 148 new positive cases, for a total of 2,803 cases tested positive. The new cases are distributed as follows:
- Estuary: 145 new cases out of 1,136 samples, including 115 out of 824 samples from mass screening and 30 out of 312 from follow-up of contact cases, for a total of 2,248 positive cases;
- Moyen-Ogoou?: 3 new positive cases including 1 in Lambar?n?, 1 in Ndjol? and 1 in Makouk?, for a total of 73 positive cases.
Regarding care:
- 96 people hospitalized;
- 12 people in intensive care;
- 57 healings, making a total of 779 people healed;
- 3 deaths including 2 men and a hypertensive woman;
In total, out of the 15,265 samples, we recorded 2,803 positive cases (18.3%) including 779 cured and 20 deaths, 96 hospitalized including 12 people in intensive care.

In terms of care, he stressed that 99 people are hospitalized, including 15 people in intensive care, noting that 22 new healings have been reported, for a total of 801 people healed.

In total, out of 15,689 samples, we count 2,902 positive cases (18.4%) including 801 cured and 20 deaths, 99 hospitalized including 15 people in intensive care, he said.

In addition, he recalled that a few days ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) had temporarily suspended clinical trials on hydroxychloroquine and certain countries decided to stop prescribing this molecule, noting that 'in Gabon, in view of the satisfactory results of hydroxychloroquine in patients with coronavirus, this treatment protocol has been maintained.
