Poultry: Gabon warns of the return of avian flu and barricades itself
post by Griffin Ondo Nzuey / May 17, 2022

Carried out recently after the recording of a poultry mortality deemed “abnormal” in three breeding sites in the province of the Estuary last April, the CIRMF analyzes revealed the presence of the H5N1 virus. The government immediately decreed the suspension of the import of poultry from neighboring countries and the closure of all points of sale of live poultry in the markets.

The results of the analyzes carried out by the International Center for Medical Research in Franceville (CIRMF) have just been released. Poultry that died in large numbers at three breeding sites in the Komo-Mondah department (Estuary) last April bear traces of the H5N1 avian flu virus. If this virus can be synonymous with investment losses for poultry farmers, scientists agree that it does not constitute a real danger for humans.

The fact remains that, faced with what they present as a pathology having "an impact on public health", in addition to the "high economic stakes" that this situation represents for professionals in the sector, the ministers in charge of Livestock and Health announced on Monday May 16 an epidemiological investigation supposed to determine the origin of the return of the virus to Gabon. This will take into account all the farms in the province.

The government also announces among the precautionary measures the ban until further notice on the circulation of live poultry in Greater Libreville. To prevent any other risk of contamination, a ban on the import of poultry from neighboring countries has been decreed, as well as the closure of all points of sale of live poultry in the markets.

Gabon/Avian flu: The government prohibits the import and sale of live poultry

By Steven Mpono-May 17, 2022

Communique-conjoint.jpg

A joint statement from the Ministries of Health and Livestock after detection of cases of avian flu from the three farms.

The Gabonese government has just banned the import of all live poultry species from neighboring countries as well as their circulation in Greater Libreville until further notice. The announcement was made on May 16, 2022 by a joint press release from the Ministries of Health and Livestock after detection of cases of avian flu from the three farms.

With this decision, the government wants to preserve the health of consumers, protect farms and strengthen controls at borders and then in markets throughout the national territory.

It is motivated by the identification of the H5N1 virus in the samples taken from three farms located in the Meyang area in the Komo Mondah department (Estuary province) after observation of "abnormal poultry mortalities" by the teams of the Directorate General for Livestock from April 13, 2022. Analyzes by the Interdisciplinary Center for Medical Research in Franceville (CIRMF) revealed the presence of "highly pathogenic avian influenza" virus.

The joint meeting of the Ministries of Health and Livestock this Monday, May 16, therefore allowed the implementation of precautionary measures knowing the dangerousness of this virus on human health and its consequences on economic activity. This is "the opening of an epidemiological investigation in farms, the ban on the movement of poultry in greater Libreville until further and the ban on the import of poultry from neighboring countries. . »

The government has also decided to close all live poultry sales points without special authorization and to strengthen biosecurity measures in all farms in Gabon. To answer all the questions raised by the discovery of this virus, 060 00 76 79 is made available to the public.

A multisector unit will visit the farms located in the estuary to take samples and raise awareness among breeders.

Fight against avian flu: FAO support in Gabon

By Saint-Paul Meviane July 5, 2022 67 No Comment

Libreville, Tuesday July 5, 2022 (Infos Gabon) – The United Nations Food Fund has just handed over to the government a large batch of rapid tests and laboratory tools.

Gabon should further step up in the fight against avian flu (H5N1) after having received support from the United Nations Fund for Agriculture in rapid tests and laboratory tools in this area. The important donation was handed over by the coordinator of the sub-regional office of this UN organization for Central Africa, Helder Muteia, to the Minister of Agriculture, Charles Mve Ella.

This donation will make it possible to identify this infection in poultry in order to limit the spread of the virus. As a reminder, last April this flu broke out in farms in the 1st arrondissement of the commune of Ntoum near Libreville. Thanks to the mobilization of public authorities with the support of the FAO, the disease was brought under control.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
As part of the epidemiological surveillance for avian influenza, samples were taken at the Mont Bouet poultry market (Libreville city) on May 3rd, 2024. An initial diagnosis was conducted by the Laboratoire National de Santé Publique (National Public Health Laboratory)on May 3rd, 2024, after which 2 out of 26 samples were found to be positive. Following these results, the samples were redirected to the Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherches Médicales de Franceville (Franceville Interdisciplinary Medical Research Center) for confirmation. The latter confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in 2 samples. Furthermore, the samples identified as positive were taken on birds from untraced farms, making traceback to the virus source impossible.
