Poultry: Gabon warns of the return of avian flu and barricades itself
post by Griffin Ondo Nzuey / May 17, 2022
Carried out recently after the recording of a poultry mortality deemed “abnormal” in three breeding sites in the province of the Estuary last April, the CIRMF analyzes revealed the presence of the H5N1 virus. The government immediately decreed the suspension of the import of poultry from neighboring countries and the closure of all points of sale of live poultry in the markets.
The results of the analyzes carried out by the International Center for Medical Research in Franceville (CIRMF) have just been released. Poultry that died in large numbers at three breeding sites in the Komo-Mondah department (Estuary) last April bear traces of the H5N1 avian flu virus. If this virus can be synonymous with investment losses for poultry farmers, scientists agree that it does not constitute a real danger for humans.
The fact remains that, faced with what they present as a pathology having "an impact on public health", in addition to the "high economic stakes" that this situation represents for professionals in the sector, the ministers in charge of Livestock and Health announced on Monday May 16 an epidemiological investigation supposed to determine the origin of the return of the virus to Gabon. This will take into account all the farms in the province.
The government also announces among the precautionary measures the ban until further notice on the circulation of live poultry in Greater Libreville. To prevent any other risk of contamination, a ban on the import of poultry from neighboring countries has been decreed, as well as the closure of all points of sale of live poultry in the markets.
