REGIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL POINT GUYANA
DENGUE January 18, 2024
Summary of the epidemiological situation
Over the past two weeks, the circulation of the dengue virus was increasing sharply and
a high level. Epidemiological indicators were on the rise in town and in emergency rooms,
particularly on the Island of Cayenne and the Savanes where viral circulation continued to intensify.
The indicators reached levels higher than those observed during the peak of the previous
epidemic in 2020. A more moderate increase is observed on the western coast and after several
relatively calm weeks, the number of consultations in CDPS on the Maroni like the Oyapock
was on the rise.
Serotypes DEN-2 and DEN-3 co-circulate in Guyana. The DEN-2 serotype has become the majority on
the Island of Cayenne and is also progressing in the Savanes sector.
As a reminder, in order to be able to best assess the epidemiological situation, it is important to
prescribe biological testing for dengue fever for any case clinically suggestive of dengue fever, preferably by RT-PCR.

Epidemiological situation in S01-02 - data as of January 14, 2024
The estimated number of cases clinically suggestive of
dengue fever seen in general medicine consultation was
clearly increasing over the last two weeks: 1321 cases
were estimated in S01-02 compared to
779 in S51-52 (Figure 1).
The number of biologically confirmed cases of dengue
was at a high level and increasing sharply with 860
biological confirmations identified in S01-02 (in progress
consolidation for S02) compared to 343 in S51-52
(Figure 1).
DEN-3 and DEN-2 serotypes co-circulate with
respectively 57% of DEN-3 and 43% DEN-2 identified
these last two weeks, mainly in the
Cayenne Island sector.
At the same time, a sharp increase in transitions to
emergencies was also observed with 308 passages
for suspected dengue fever in S01-02 (vs. 146 in S51-52).
Thus, the last two weeks have been marked by
a sharp acceleration in the circulation of the virus
dengue fever in Guyana.
It mainly concerned the Island of Cayenne but the
traffic was also at a high level in the other
sectors. In particular, we note an increase
consultations for dengue-like syndrome in
Maroni and Oyapock health centers (notably in
St Georges) during the last week S02.
