Case of Monkeypox: update in France

As of June 3, 2022 at 2 p.m., 51 confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported in France: 37 in Ile-de-France, 6 in Occitanie, 4 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 2 in Normandy, 1 in Hauts-de-France and 1 in Centre-Val de Loire.

Out of 45 confirmed cases as of June 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., 43 were investigated, one refused and the last could not be reached.

All the cases investigated are men, aged between 22 and 63 years (median age: 37 years). Among the cases investigated, two are immunocompromised, one was hospitalized but is no longer so; none died.

To date, as in other European countries, these cases have occurred mainly, but not exclusively, in men who have sex with men (MSM), with no direct link to people returning from endemic areas.

Among the cases investigated, 22 traveled abroad before the onset of their symptoms, some of them to several different countries: 13 trips are thus reported to Spain, 3 to Belgium, 3 to Germany, 1 to Portugal, 1 to the United United, 1 in the Netherlands, 1 in Morocco, and 1 in India. Most of the cases investigated declare that they cannot identify the person who allegedly infected them. Finally, two of the cases investigated are secondary cases, not vaccinated, of cases confirmed in France.
The next update of this report will take place on Tuesday 7 June.

MONKEY POX: INFECTIOLOGIST KARINE LACOMBE CONFIDES HER CONCERN

Juliette Desmonceaux
the06/05/2022 at 12:17

The head of the infectiology department at Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris warns of an "epidemic outbreak" in France, when no specific vaccine has yet been found to prevent the disease.

The number of cases is climbing. With 51 people infected on the territory , monkeypox is progressing in France, according to figures from Public Health France. Cause for concern? “Rather” yes, for Karine Lacombe, head of the infectiology department at Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris, who confides that the disease still has “many unknowns”, in Le Parisien .

After the Covid-19 pandemic, France, like many of its neighbours , is experiencing an increase in cases of monkeypox, a disease that is most often mild, characterized by its impressive pustules.

For Karine Lacombe, the disease is experiencing a "full epidemic outbreak" in the country.

"For now, there is no treatment," she recalls. Only an antiviral, preventive medication or taken as early treatment, is currently available. Still in the development phase, it only exists in small quantities.

While the executive has chosen to only vaccinate people at risk of contact cases against smallpox , the only vaccine currently available, the doctor also wonders about the relevance of this strategy.

"Will this so-called 'ring' vaccination be enough to curb the epidemic? Or will it be necessary to go further by also vaccinating contacts of contacts?", She wonders.

Figures "most likely underestimated"

Despite the increase in cases, the trend still has little impact on the hospital system.

"We do not necessarily see patients arriving at the hospital because many consult their doctor for fever or a rash", explains Karine Lacombe.

The epidemiologist wants to be cautious despite everything in the face of an epidemic which is potentially evolving in silence.

"The current figures are most likely underestimated," she believes, recalling that the diagnosis must be made in a specialized center, few in France, to be officially confirmed.

“The parallel chickenpox epidemic can also create confusion and underdiagnosis,” she adds.

Until research progresses and we know more about this sudden epidemic outbreak, "the only treatment is prevention", sums up Karine Lacombe, in reference to the vaccine against smallpox.

Marseille: a first case of monkeypox diagnosed in a hospital professional

Published on06/06/2022 at 3:17 p.m.
Written by Annie Vergnenegre

A case of infection with the monkey pox virus was diagnosed on Saturday in a professional from the Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Marseille (AP-HM), we learned on Monday. The case is mild and the agent has been placed in solitary confinement at his home.

The Monkeypox virus (monkey pox) was detected in a professional from a Marseille public hospital on Saturday, AP-HM said in a press release.

“Currently isolated, he is doing well”, specifies the Public Assistance. Staff who have been in close contact with the patient have been informed and may consult occupational medicine if they wish to "clarify the risk of exposure" and be informed about the vaccine.

The risk of transmission to patients ruled out

“Given current information, the probability of contamination to other people is considered negligible”, assures the AP-HM.

This particularly applies to patients in the hospital concerned, "given the precautions applied by the professional".

Monkeypox is a rare viral infectious disease. The Monkeypox virus is mainly transmitted to humans by rodents, then the contamination is from person to person by droplet or close contact.

First case in Paca

The symptoms are comparable to those of smallpox but the disease is less severe.

The first case of infection with the Monkeypox virus was confirmed in France on May 19 in the Paris region.

Santé Publique France indicates that as of June 3, 2022, 51 confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported: 37 in Ile-de-France, 6 in Occitanie, 4 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 2 in Normandy, 1 in Hauts-de-France. -France and 1 in Centre-Val de Loire. All the cases investigated are men, aged between 22 and 63 years. None died.

This first case of monkey pox confirmed in Marseille is also the first in Paca.

Case of Monkeypox: update in France

As of June 7, 2022 at 2 p.m., 66 confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported in France: 48 in Ile-de-France, 8 in Occitanie, 5 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 2 in Normandy, 1 in Hauts-de-France , 1 in Centre-Val de Loire and 1 in Paca.

Out of 66 cases confirmed as of June 7, 2022 at 2 p.m., 61 have been the subject of an investigation, one has refused it and remains unreachable and 3 are under investigation. All the investigated cases are men, aged between 22 and 63 years (median age: 35 years). Among the cases investigated, 3 are immunocompromised, one was hospitalized but is no longer so; none died.

To date, as in other European countries, these cases have occurred mainly, but not exclusively, in men who have sex with men (MSM), with no direct link to people returning from endemic areas.

Among the cases investigated, 28 traveled abroad before the onset of their symptoms, some of which to several different countries: 14 trips are thus reported to Spain, 4 to Belgium, 4 to Germany, 1 to Portugal, 1 to the United United, 1 in the Netherlands, 1 in Morocco, 1 in India, 1 in Switzerland, 1 in the United States and 1 in Mali. These trips do not systematically constitute the origin of the contamination.

Most of the cases investigated declare that they cannot identify the person who allegedly infected them. Finally, 3 of the cases investigated are secondary cases, including 2 unvaccinated and under investigation, of confirmed cases in France.

The next update of this report will take place on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

Given what has been observed in Europe on the disease, targeted communication was quickly implemented towards MSM people. The messages recall the modes of transmission, the symptoms, and what to do in the event of symptoms. They are currently broadcast digitally on the Sexosafe site dedicated to MSM and via social networks. At the same time, in the field, posters, flyers and advice sheets were distributed thanks to the associative actors, the ARS and the Sexofe teams present in the field. Preventive actions will adapt to the evolution of the situation.

The Bordeaux University Hospital (CHU) ( Gironde ) announced on Wednesday June 8, 2022 that a case of monkey pox had been diagnosed within the establishment. The patient in question is a man in his thirties whose state of health "does not inspire concern" , said the hospital in a press release relayed by Sud Ouest . CHU officials reported the patient to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of New Aquitaine .

Placed in an isolated room

It could be the first case of monkeypox recorded in the region, indicates the regional daily. The patient was placed in an isolated room in the university hospital center and remains under medical supervision. The declaration to the ARS was followed by the launch of an action to trace the young man's contact cases.

Nationally, health authorities were aware of 66 confirmed cases of monkeypox , also called monkeypox, as of the end of the day on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, our colleagues report. Four days earlier, Public Health France (SPF) had identified only 51 cases in the whole country.

Prevention of the risk of transmission of the monkeypox virus by labile blood products, grafts and other elements of the human body

Notice (417 KB)

Document date: 09/06/2022
Date posted: 06/13/2022

In the context of recent episodes of cases of monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection occurring outside endemic African areas, the HCSP proposes preventive measures to be implemented to prevent the transmission of MPXV by blood products, grafts and other products and elements of the human body (PCH).

In view of the data available on the modes of transmission of MPXV, diagnostic methods, persistence of MPXV in the human body, virus inactivation processes and international recommendations, the HCSP recommends:

1) For contact persons who have received the Imvanex© vaccine, exclusion from PCH donation for a period of 4 weeks after the last dose of vaccine
2) For donors of blood and organs, tissues, cells:

  • A 21-day deferment to donation for people identified as contact cases
  • A 42-day donation deferment for people with confirmed MPXV infection
However, these recommendations take into account specific situations requiring:
  • In the event of a vital emergency (heart and liver) for organ donations from donors with a confirmed, probable or suspected infection, to carry out an orthopoxvirus PCR on blood, subject to being able to provide the result within the deadlines and assess the benefit/risk ratio on a case-by-case basis,
  • If it is impossible to postpone a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, to be able to have the result of an orthopoxvirus PCR on blood,
  • In the presence of elements in favor of MPXV infection in deceased donors, to exclude them definitively from the donation of organs, tissues or cells.
3) For medically assisted procreation, people who have had a confirmed MPXV infection are adjourned 42 days from the date of onset of clinical signs and those identified as contact cases are adjourned 21 days from the date of last contact.

For the preservation of fertility, the sample is postponed whenever possible or otherwise frozen (an orthopoxvirus PCR test will be performed at the time of thawing).

Monkey pox: a first suspected case of Monkeypox recorded in Montpellier

Published on06/15/2022 at 22:01

MIDI LIBRE INFO - A case of monkeypox or "Monkeypox" could have been recorded in Montpellier (Hérault). Investigations are underway at the Gui de Chauliac hospital to confirm the case.

A first case of monkeypox was reportedly detected at the Gui de Chauliac hospital in Montpellier (Hérault) on Tuesday, June 14.

A man in his fifties

According to our information, it would be a man of about fifty years victim in particular of a rash in the form of pustules, of those which could be characteristic of the famous smallpox of the monkey. The patient was admitted yesterday to an infectious and tropical disease unit and his condition is not believed to be critical.

"At this time, we cannot confirm 100% that it is a case of monkey pox, indicates the communication department of the CHU. But we have strong suspicions".

Angoulême: a first case of monkeypox detected and isolated

Published on 06/16/2022 at 4:14 p.m.
Written by Clément Massé with Jérôme Deboeuf and AFP

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency confirms that a very first case of monkey pox has been diagnosed at Angoulême hospital. At present, Europe finds itself at the center of the spread of this disease. The WHO is concerned about the risk of the virus taking hold on the continent.

A very first case of monkey pox was diagnosed at the Angoulême hospital center (16), the Regional Health Agency (ARS) told France 3, confirming information from our colleagues from La Charente Libre.

"We have indeed had confirmation of a case of monkey pox in the Charente department" , explains Johanne Vassellier, head of the health monitoring and infectious risk prevention center at the ARS in Bordeaux. "We received the return of the analysis which confirms this case on Tuesday evening June 14 quite late. The person is not hospitalized, he is isolated."

She specifies that "as the protocol asks us, this person was called by Public Health France and the ARS for a first investigation around his state of health and the list of possible contact cases. Confirmed cases and contact cases , if there are any, are then called twice a week by the ARS to follow the evolution of their situation and answer any questions.

These reminders take place throughout the imposed duration of the isolation, i.e. 3 weeks, further specifies the ARS.

ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE

Monkey pox: what is the risk of spreading to pets?

Cats, dogs, rodents…to which pets can humans transmit monkeypox? Following the increase in the number of people infected with this virus in many countries outside endemic areas, including France, ANSES received an urgent request on this issue.

The animal species most at risk of contamination by humans

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) or monkey pox is an endemic zoonosis in Central and West Africa, where the virus has been demonstrated in various wild animal species without the reservoir having been formally identified.

In the available scientific literature, data relating to the susceptibility of pets to monkeypox are very limited or even absent. The Agency therefore emphasizes that the conclusions of its expert appraisal are likely to change.

In the state of knowledge:
  1. Lagomorphs, such as rabbits or hares , are receptive and sensitive under experimental conditions, especially baby rabbits. These are the most represented animals in the new pets.
  2. The sciurids, including squirrels and prairie dogs, seem to constitute a receptive and sensitive family, possibly the most at risk of contamination by humans. However, the possession and sale of these animals is not authorized in France.
  3. Pet rodents , such as brown rats, mice, guinea pigs or even hamsters, seem not very receptive to the virus in adulthood but could be so for the youngest animals.
  4. Data are lacking for ferrets and dogs. Concerning cats, only one serological study exists with negative results. At this stage, no clinical cases have been reported in these three species.

Receptivity, sensitivity: what's the difference?
The receptivity of a virus is the ability of an animal species to harbor the virus without necessarily developing symptoms.
Susceptibility is the ability of the animal species to express clinical signs and/or lesions due to the virus.

Recommendations to limit the spread of the virus to pets

When a person is infected with the monkeypox virus, the precautionary measures include:
  1. Avoid contact between the animal and the infected person as much as possible , ideally by having the animal looked after by another person during the isolation period;
  2. Before each contact with your animal, wash your hands, then wear gloves and a single-use mask.
These recommendations may be refined based on new data.
Pending additional data on the sensitivity and receptivity of pets, the greatest vigilance is recommended to veterinarians receiving in consultation animals whose owner is symptomatic. This will help detect any early signs of the virus passing from human to animal. This will require organizing a monitoring program involving field veterinarians.

A new expertise to come

By the end of 2022, new expertise will complete these initial elements. It will focus on the assessment of the risks of transmission of the virus to peridomestic fauna (particularly rodents) and to the environment as well as the measures to be taken to prevent and monitor it. An assessment of the risk of virus importation by infected animals will also be carried out.

The next update of this report will take place on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Given what has been observed in Europe on the disease, targeted communication was quickly implemented towards MSM people. The messages remind you of the symptoms and what to do in the event of symptoms. They are currently broadcast digitally and via an affinity display network in bars and restaurants. At the same time, posters, flyers and advice sheets were distributed thanks to associations, ARS and Sexosafe teams present in the field.

Finally, on the site sexosafe.fr , dedicated to the sexuality of MSM people, a summary of knowledge on the subject and preventive measures is offered.

Monkeypox: the reactive vaccine strategy specified for primary vaccinees and children

PRESS RELEASE - Posted on Jun 20 2022

June 20, 2022

On referral from the Ministry of Health, HAS specifies the vaccination strategy to be implemented around a confirmed case of monkeypox ( Monkeypox ) for two population groups: first-time vaccinators, i.e. people who were vaccinated against smallpox in childhood, and children. The HAS thus recommends administering a single dose of vaccine to at-risk contact persons vaccinated against smallpox before 1980, except for immunocompromised persons. In addition, HAS proposes that the vaccination of children exposed to the virus and likely to develop a severe form of the disease can be considered on a case-by-case basis, by specialists only and after a strict assessment of the benefits and risks.

On May 20, 2022, HAS published an initial recommendation for a vaccine strategy against Monkeypox virus (monkey pox) . It was subsequently contacted by the Director General of Health in order to provide details on the reactive vaccination strategy for two population groups: first-time recipients and children. To do this, in its opinion of June 16, 2022, HAS took into consideration the definition of cases and contact persons at risk according to Public Health France (SPF), the opinion of the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and health products (ANSM) [Link to the opinion] concerning the vaccination of people who have already been vaccinated against smallpox in childhood and the use of the smallpox vaccine of 3generation in children, [SUP]the [/SUP]WHO recommendations dated June 14, 2022 as well as several studies and clinical trials.

One dose for first-vaccinated at-risk contact cases, three if they are immunocompromised

Preventive vaccination against human smallpox was compulsory in France until the 1980s (1979 for primary vaccination, 1984 for boosters). To establish, with or without a document justifying the vaccination, proof of prior smallpox vaccination, the HAS retains the presence of an indelible waffle scar , characteristic in people who have been vaccinated with a 1st [SUP]or[/SUP] 2nd [SUP]vaccine[/SUP] . generation.

While several studies referenced in the HAS opinion have demonstrated the persistence of the immune response in individuals vaccinated against human smallpox in childhood, three clinical trials have also shown that the administration of a dose of Imvanex ® in a person who has previously received a primary vaccination with another type of smallpox vaccine confers a booster effect, even very far from this primary vaccination.

The HAS therefore recommends the administration of a single dose of the Imvanex ® vaccine for at-risk contact persons who received smallpox vaccination with a 1st generation vaccine [SUP]before[/SUP] 1980.

In the particular case where the contact persons at risk are immunocompromised patients, previous vaccination with another smallpox vaccine does not modify the vaccination schedule initially recommended in this population, ie 3 doses of Imvanex ® .

A vaccination of minors in post-exhibition to consider on a case-by-case basis

The number of cases of infection by the Monkeypox virus is increasing rapidly in France but does not currently concern children. While smallpox vaccination has long been implemented in infants and young children with first and second generation vaccines before the eradication of smallpox, the Imvanex ® vaccine is only authorized for adults.
To issue its opinion, HAS analyzed the available studies. Several of them, carried out in African countries, show that children are more likely to develop serious forms of the disease and that mortality is also higher in this population. During the epidemic that affected the United States in 2003, among the 35 laboratory-confirmed cases (of the 71 declared cases), 11 were children aged 6 to 18, of whom 2 developed a severe form of the disease. sickness.

Furthermore, although the Imvanex ® vaccine is currently authorized only in adults, several studies concerning other vaccines using the same platform as Imvanex ® (the Modified Virus Ankara - MVA), at higher doses than those recommended for Imvanex ® , have demonstrated good tolerance in children over 4 months. Additionally, no adverse effects were reported following vaccinations – including of children and infants – during the UK outbreak in 2018 and 2019.

The HAS also relied on the opinion of the ANSM which emphasizes that the immunogenicity data are insufficient to enable a full decision to be made on the benefit/risk ratio concerning the administration of 3rd generation smallpox vaccines in the pediatric population [SUP].[/SUP] . However, the ANSM considers that the historical safety data obtained with the 1st generation [SUP]vaccines[/SUP] (the vaccine was used from the age of 1 year) as well as the safety data available concerning the "MVA platform" used as a vector for immunization against other pathogens (Ebola virus, malaria and tuberculosis) [SUP]are[/SUP] in favor of the use of vaccines of 3rdgeneration, after a case-by-case assessment for each child, as part of post-exposure reactive vaccination.

Based on these different elements, HAS:

  • Proposes that the reactive vaccination of children at risk (as defined by SPF) can be considered to protect exposed children and possibly more likely to develop severe forms of the disease, especially the most fragile and immunocompromised. However, in the absence of clinical 3rd generation vaccine safety data (indirect, reassuring safety data, being nevertheless available), the HAS recommends that the vaccination of people under 18 is envisaged on a case -by -case basis, by specialists only and after a strict assessment of the benefits and risks for the minor concerned, within the framework of a shared medical decision, and with the consent of the parents (or the legal guardian of the child), and of the teenager if applicable.
  • Recommends the acceleration of the conduct of clinical trials in the pediatric population evaluating the efficacy and safety of third-generation smallpox vaccines with a view to an extension of indication in the pediatric population by the EMA.
HAS will adapt this preliminary recommendation as soon as the data from clinical trials in the pediatric population are available and according to new epidemiological and clinical data. It stresses the importance of soon having more precise data on the mode of human-to-human transmission for the cases currently identified, epidemic monitoring data and additional real-life data relating to the efficacy and tolerance of the smallpox vaccine. of 3rd generation, administered in pre-exhibition [SUP]and[/SUP] post-exposure to the monkeypox virus, on the prevention of severe forms and on the transmission of the disease in the various population subgroups, as well as data relating to the efficacy and tolerance of a booster dose in people who have been vaccinated against smallpox in their childhood.

Finally, the cases identified in France concerning men having sex with one or more men (MSM), the HAS insists on the need to inform them of the risks of transmission during close or intimate physical contact . It also recalls the importance of respecting the measures to prevent the transmission of the Monkeypox virus both for the general public and for healthcare personnel , as recommended by the High Council for Public Health in its opinion of May 24 .

Case of monkeypox: update in France

As of 21 June 2022 at 2:00 p.m., 277 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in France: 195 in Ile-de-France, 16 in Occitanie, 14 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 16 in New Aquitaine, 12 in Hauts -de-France, 12 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, 6 in Normandy, 1 in Centre-Val de Loire, 1 in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 1 in Grand-Est and 3 in Brittany. Among these cases, a first female case has been confirmed, whose mode of transmission is under investigation, and all the others are male.

Of the 248 cases confirmed as of June 20, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., 243 have been investigated, one remains unreachable and 4 are under investigation.

All confirmed cases as of June 20, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. are male, aged between 19 and 71 (median age: 34).

Symptom onset dates range between May 7, 2022 and June 15, 2022 (Figure 1). Cases were diagnosed a median of 7 days (range 0 to 22 days) after symptom onset; therefore, data for the last week is not consolidated.

Figure 1. Confirmed cases of monkeypox (n=248), by date of onset of symptoms, France, May-June 2022 (data as of 06/20/2022)

fig_cas_confirmes_variole_singe_210622.jpg

Among the cases investigated, 78% presented a genito-anal rash, 75% an eruption on another part of the body, 70% a fever and 69% lymphadenopathy.

Among the cases investigated, 11 are immunocompromised; none died.

To date, as in other European countries, these cases have occurred mainly, but not exclusively, in men who have sex with men (MSM), with no direct link to people returning from endemic areas. The majority of cases report multiple sexual partners.

Most of the cases investigated declare that they cannot identify the person who allegedly infected them.

Finally, 38 of the cases investigated are secondary cases.

Among the cases investigated, 67 had travelled, stayed or worked abroad before the onset of their symptoms, some of them in several different countries: 35 trips were thus reported to Spain, 8 to Belgium, 6 to Germany, 4 to the United Kingdom. United, 4 in Switzerland, 3 in Portugal, 2 in the Netherlands, 2 in Denmark, 2 in Mali, 2 in Greece, 1 in Luxembourg, 1 in India, 1 in the United States, 1 in Colombia, 1 in Morocco, 1 in Cyprus and 1 in Serbia. These trips do not systematically constitute the origin of the contamination, and the list of countries cited may change as the data is consolidated.

The next update of this report will take place on Tuesday, June 28, 2022.

Prevention actions are continuously adapted to the evolution of the situation and the state of knowledge.

In the usual absence of monkeypox in Europe and of a link reported by the cases identified with a risk zone, the current European context constitutes an alert and suggests contamination in Europe. This is why, in France, the long-term surveillance of monkeypox through the mandatory notification system is reinforced and information and alert messages are sent to health professionals. Exchanges are also continuing with other European countries, the WHO and the ECDC.

Monkey pox: A first confirmed case of monkeypox in a child in France
A child attending primary school in Ile-de-France was infected with monkeypox. He is the first child to be affected by this disease in France. "He shows no signs of seriousness," say the authorities.

"The Île-de-France Regional Health Agency (ARS) informs of the occurrence of a first confirmed case of monkeypox (monkey pox) in a child attending primary school in the region. He was taken care of and shows no signs of seriousness," authorities said in a statement on Saturday evening.

This is the first confirmed case of Monkeypox in a child in France; the virus had previously only affected adults (330 cases confirmed by Santé Publique France as of June 23 at 2 p.m.).

The ARS Île-de-France and the teams of Public Health France indicate that they have "immediately started the investigations in order to trace the child's chain of contacts as quickly as possible. A probable case has been identified within the same siblings" .

Measures have been taken with National Education and a message has been sent to the parents of children who are at-risk contacts at the school attended by the child, in order to follow the following recommendations...

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) Île-de-France informs of the occurrence of a first confirmed case of monkeypox (monkey pox) in a child attending primary school in the region. He was taken care of and shows no signs of seriousness.

The ARS Île-de-France and the teams of Public Health France immediately began the investigations in order to trace the chain of contacts of the child as quickly as possible. A probable case has been identified within the same siblings. Measures have been taken with National Education and a message has been sent to the parents of children who are at-risk contacts at the school attended by the child, in order to follow the following recommendations:
  1. Monitor the appearance of symptoms (fever, rash) and call 15 if necessary;
  2. Be offered a consultation in order to have the child benefit from a vaccination if it is deemed necessary by the doctor;
  3. In the absence of symptoms, and in the state of knowledge, there is no known risk of contagion. No measure is therefore necessary for the child (neither isolation nor adaptation of activities) nor for the other members of the family.
This is the first confirmed case of Monkeypox in a child in France; the virus had previously only affected adults (330 cases confirmed by Santé Publique France as of June 23 at 2 p.m., including 227 in Île-de-France)

The characteristics and the contagiousness of this disease mean that it can also affect children in a family setting by sharing linens, living rooms, cutlery, in particular. This is the case in some countries where this virus is endemic and where transmission can occur through close contact with a person who shows signs of the disease (rash in the form of “pimples”) . The risk of transmission, for the entire population, is assessed as low.

The cases reported in France and in Europe have so far occurred mainly in young adults, and are benign.

From the start of the epidemic, the health authorities anticipated the appearance of the virus in children in order to be able to prevent it and take care of confirmed cases through recommendations adapted from the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) and Haut Public Health Council (HCSP).

A first confirmed case of monkeypox in Corsica

By: Marie-Céline Spor

A first case of monkeypox was confirmed in Corsica this Sunday, June 25.

A first. The regional health agency (ARS) of Corsica confirms, this Sunday evening through a press release sent to our editorial staff, the first case of monkeypox on the island. More commonly known as "monkey pox ", the individual with "mild symptoms" was taken care of a few days ago.

The ARS of Corsica indicates that it "is an adult person with no history of travel to a country where the virus is circulating" .

For the time being, "his condition shows no sign of seriousness" specifies the specialists.

An epidemiological investigation launched

The ARS of Corsica is thus carrying out, in cooperation with the teams of Public Health France, an in-depth epidemiological investigation “with the doctor who took charge of this person” .

The press release also indicates that "the people who have been in close contact with this patient have been identified" by the health authorities, who also gave them the "information on what to do" .

Management measures have been put in place to minimize the spread of monkeypox on the island.
