Influenza A/H1N1: no "summer break" found so far

PARIS - No "summer break" has, as yet, been observed in the progression of the pandemic influenza A/H1N1 in France, "said Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot, in an interview published Monday in Paris .

"L'?t? est normalement moins favorable ? la contamination par le virus mais, contrairement ? ce que nous esp?rions, nous n'enregistrons pas, pour le moment, de r?pit estival", a indiqu? Mme Bachelot. "The summer is normally less favorable to infection by the virus but, unlike what we expected, we do not, for now, summer break," said Bachelot.

The Health Minister said that two scenarios have been studied: "summer break with rebound in the fall, or scenario with a linear slope on the rise."

"Les vacances ?tant l'occasion de voyages et de vie sociale plus active, l'?t? peut ?tre une p?riode propice ? la circulation accrue du virus", note-t-elle, estimant les personnes malades devront envisager de reporter leur d?part. "The holidays are an opportunity to travel and more active social life, the summer can be a time for the increased circulation of the virus," she notes, feeling sick people should consider postponing their departure.

Appellant did not relax the rules of hygiene, she stressed that the masks will be distributed automatically in case of epidemic high.

According to Ms. Bachelot, the balance of influenza A/H1N1 in France since the beginning of the epidemic is 276 confirmed cases.

The last balance sheet published Friday by the Institut de Veille Sanitaire (InVS) reported 239 confirmed cases.

Re: France reports 371 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu

France has 371 cases of influenza A (H1N1)

By Reuters, published on 06/07/2009

PARIS - France Monday reported 371 cases of influenza A (H1N1) since the beginning of
the epidemic, according to a final point of the Institut de Veille Sanitaire (INVS).
During the previous review, July 3, 331 cases had been identified.

Of the 371 cases confirmed Monday, 330 are in metropolitan France and 341 are
cases imported or linked to imported cases.

The French Minister of Health, Roselyne Bachelot, said the week
last that the vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) is available in the fall in
France.

According to experts, immunizing a French two, approximately 30 million
people, is sufficient to protect the entire population of the country.

Roselyne Bachelot said that the situation in France, where there are no "no
serious case of influenza A had nothing to do with the United Kingdom, where almost
10,000 patients have been reported.

?To July 15, six cases of influenza requiring a hospitalization were reported. They are old from 14 to 70 years and 4 are of female sex. Five of them were hospitalized for suspect?e or proven pneumonia, for exploration of a prolonged fever?. Three patients left the hospital and, specifies the institute, ?any death is not announced?.

793 cases confirmed or probable in France

PARIS - France added up Wednesday 793 cases confirmed or probable since the beginning of the epidemic of new influenza has (H1N1), indicated to Wednesday the managing director of the National Sanitary Surveillance Institute (InVS), Francoise Weber.
?One can say that in France one is in front of an epidemic which overall to date does not present character of gravity and which develops in a way still limited on the territory?, Dr. Weber at the time of a press conference to the ministry for Health declared. ?We are not in a situation with English, if I then to say?, it added.
On the whole 586 cases are confirmed on the French territory (including 483 case in Metropolitan France). 207 probable cases are added to it which were not the subject of virological tests. 37 episodes of grouped cases were recorded, specified InVS.
19 patients were hospitalized ?and among these 19 patients, only 3 required a recourse to the intensive care?, specified Dr. Weber. ?All had a favorable evolution?.
Dr. Weber indicated that the inspection networks ?do not show an unusual activity except for S.O.S doctors which has a small increase in activity?. ?But one is during one time when the doctors leave on holiday?, she added.

PARIS - France added up Wednesday 1.022 cases confirmed or probable, including 4 serious cases, since the beginning of the epidemic of new influenza has (H1N1), according to the last point of situation of the National Sanitary Surveillance Institute (InVS).
?The disease remains benign to date?, indicates InVS. ?The grippale activity in liberal medicine or at the hospital does not show a sign in favour of a broad circulation of the virus in the population?, adds it.
One counts 852 cases for the only metropolis: 556 confirmed cases, to which 296 probable cases are added which were not the subject of virological tests.
?In metropolis, the increase moderate in the number of episodes of cases grouped in communities continues with 14 new episodes, that is to say on the whole 51 identified episodes, including 35 without bond with imported cases?, InVS indicates. 14 episodes occurred in Ile-de-France, the 36 others being distributed mainly in the tourist areas.
At July 29, 31 people were hospitalized for the influenza has (H1N1) 2009, which 27 left. Only 4 adult patients (between 39 and 70 years) required a recourse to the intensive care: 3 bacterial pneumopathies and a hypoxemy (lowering of the oxygen pressure in blood) badly tolerated in elderly. ?All had a favorable evolution?, specifies InVS.
In the Antilles and in Guyana, no new case was confirmed. Seasonal viruses circulate on the island of the Meeting where cases related to the new virus are also identified (26 confirmed cases and 6 probable cases).

Influenza A: Ten dead in France

The death toll due to influenza A heavier. To date, the virus has killed ten people in France.

Five in New Caledonia, three in French Polynesia, and recently he made a second victim in the metropolis.

Monday, Institut de Veille Sanitaire (InVS) announced that a woman of 56 years carrying the influenza A (H1N1) died in the department of Landes. This is the second death in the metropolis.

InVS said in a statement that the latest victim "had multiple risk factors. She was staying in a home for disabled adults.

More worryingly, the epidemic of influenza A/H1N1 has in the last days, his first victims in New Caledonia among those showing no pathology or known risk while local authorities ensure that no damage health situation.

A man of 30 years and a 46 year old woman died Friday and Saturday as a result of influenza, said Monday the Department of Health and Social (DASS) of New Caledonia.

This brings to five the number of deaths on the Caillou related viruses. Three victims are also counted in French Polynesia.

"Two people died this weekend in New Caledonia had no prior disease, said health authorities Monday Caledonian in a statement. "These two patients had no known risk factor", unlike the three previous victims.

Dr. Lecocq, intensive care unit of the Gaston Bourret hospital in Noumea, however, said on TV New Caledonia that the man of 30 years was rocked by an overweight. The news states that the DASS died August 21 following a lung disease caused by H1N1 virus. He was hospitalized from August 14 to Gaston Bourret, where his condition rapidly worsened.

The 46 year old woman, also died of pneumonia, was hospitalized for her last week in the ICU the same center.

Philippe Dunoyer, local government official in charge of health, nevertheless felt that there was no new phase of the epidemic. "The people should not worry. Influenza A is the same, it has not changed in severity, it is no more morbid than before," he said.

"These deaths are anything but a translation of a lack of control of New Caledonia," said Mr. Dunoyer. No shortage of medicines is to be deplored and hospitals are not overwhelmed "even if the situation is somewhat tense," he said.

Christian Bulot, director of Gaston Bourret, confirmed that "resources were sufficient and that the assumed quality. But be careful "not to exceed a certain fatigue," he added.

Reinforcements hardware from the city - mainly in ventilation and dialysis equipment - are expected in the coming days to a date not yet specified, but the reinforcement humans are not necessary in the current situation, said government.

Philippe Dunoyer said that emphasis would be placed on the reception of patients, because "the global epidemic should lead to a particular vigilance".

In the Loyalty Islands, which is from the woman died this weekend, health officials believe that the epidemic is declining, and the peak was reached. "Consultations diminish," said a doctor.

In Northern Province, the epidemic is stagnating. "It moves from commune to commune. In some, it is virtually complete while in others it explodes," said provincial health official.

Flu had the first three victims last week in New Caledonia: a girl of eight, a woman aged 58 and a young man of 27 years. All three were considered at risk, carriers of serious diseases. According to government estimates, about 10% of the population has already been in contact with the virus H1N1.

H1N1 FLU PANDEMIC

France records 2nd flu death

PARIS - A 56-YEAR-OLD disabled woman with pre-existing health problems has become mainland France's second H1N1 flu patient to die, the national health monitoring agency said on Monday.

France's European homeland has so far escaped relatively lightly from the A(H1N1) pandemic, with the only previous fatality being a young woman with a serious lung infection who died in Britanny on July 30.

France's Pacific Ocean territories of New Caledonia and French Polynesia have been worse hit, with five and three fatalities respectively, despite the relatively tiny size of their populations.

These islands, along with the Indian Ocean territory of Reunion, are in the southern hemisphere and thus already going through their winter flu season.

France was to send a nine-strong team of emergency medical reinforcements to French Polynesia later Monday, both to help local officials contain and treat the outbreak and to learn lessons ahead of the northern hemisphere winter. --
