A few more details...
(Adds details, quotes) By Alaa Shahine CAIRO, March 11 (Reuters) -

A 4-year-old Egyptian boy has contracted the deadly bird flu virus, bringing to 24 the number of Egyptians who have tested positive for the disease, Health Ministry and World Health Organisation officials said on Sunday.

The ministry said Mohamed Mahmoud Ibrahim from the Nile Delta province of Dakahlia had fallen ill with the H5N1 virus after coming into contact with infected poultry. "He is in a good condition," Amr Kandeel, head of communicable disease control at the ministry, told Reuters.

Hassan el-Bushra, regional adviser for communicable disease surveillance for the World Health Organisation, said Ibrahim had started to show symptoms on Wednesday and was hospitalised a day later with a high fever. He was receiving the antiviral drug Tamiflu. "We do not wish illness to anyone but we are happy that people are reporting symptoms earlier," Bushra said.

Egypt has the largest known bird flu cluster outside Asia, with 13 deaths out of the 24 reported human cases. Officials have said the high mortality rate is partly because sufferers failed to report to hospitals fast enough after developing symptoms, either because they did not suspect bird flu or feared authorities would confiscate their poultry. Around five million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and income and the government has said this makes it unlikely the disease can be eradicated.

Bushra said Ibrahim came into contact with dead poultry in the first three days of March. The Health Ministry said in a statement his family was being tested for the deadly virus.

Bird flu initially caused panic across Egypt and did extensive damage to the poultry industry. The government has said poultry production has recovered to 2 million birds a day, the same level as before the outbreak.

Previous cases of infection were usually accompanied by exposure to sick birds. Generally, if a person is infected, the Egyptian health ministry monitors the rest of the family members for signs of the disease.

Several weeks ago, the Egyptian government had suspected that a mutated strain of the virus with ?reduced susceptibility? to the Tamiflu vaccine had emerged.

Medical experts confirmed shortly afterwards that the virus had in fact not mutated to a new and more dangerous strain transmitted between humans.

Note that the 4 year old girl (confirmed case) from Nabarouh district, Dakahlia, is Sara Al Sayed Barham:

Barham is not a last name in Egypt -- at least not as Westerners understand last names. In these cases, Barham should be the (first) name of each of the kids' paternal grandfather(s).

So, they might not be related and each just have a paternal grandfather named Barham -- definitely a possibility. Or, they could be cousins living in neighboring villages in/around Nabarouh.

So is Reham another spelling of Barham?

Yeah, that's right. Google translates the name as "Barham" whereas Sakhr translates it as "Reham" (or "by Reham") [Barham ... Ba rham ... By Reham...].

Sara's name via Google = Sarah Mr. Barham
Sara's name via Sakhr = Sara Al Sayed is by Reham

Mohamed's name via Google = Mohamed Mahmoud Barham
Mohamed's name via Sakhr = Mohamed Mahmoud is by Reham

The names written in the original Arabic are:

Sara = سارة السيد برهام
Mohamed = محمد محمود برهام

This -- برهام -- is Barham or 'by Reham'.

Here's an example of a translation where Sara's name came out 'Reham' (or 'by Reham'):

Re: Four-year old marks 24th human bird flu case in Egypt

But remember -- Barham or Reham or whatever is not a surname.

Mohamed Mahmoud Barham = Mohamed son of Mahmoud son of Barham.

Barham, then, should be the first name of Mohamed's paternal grandfather.

Same should be true for Sara.

The question is, is it the same Barham or not?

Are these 14 new suspected cases in addition to the 17 (?) last week?

Difficult to be 100% sure since there were no specifics given in this last report (no names or anything) -- but I'm pretty sure these are, indeed, new cases in addition to the 17 from last week.

It's the same paper reporting these new sus cases -- Al Masry Al Youm [Egypt Today] -- that reported on the 17 last week. They don't usually repeat themselves on bf stories (and they are reported to be a quite reliable, independent paper, too).

Thanks again for all your reporting on Indo, btw -- your 'heads up' on the latest neighbors as sus cases was much appreciated, for instance! :)

Associated Press

CAIRO, Egypt -- A 4-year-old Egyptian boy has contracted the potentially deadly strain of bird flu, bringing to two dozen the number of people to be diagnosed with the disease since it appeared in the country last year, the Health Ministry said Sunday.

Mohammed Mahmoud Ibrahim tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu Saturday, two days after being admitted to the hospital with a fever and cold symptoms, the ministry said in a statement.

Ibrahim, who lives in the Nile delta town of Daqahliya, is receiving medical treatment at Manshiyat Al Bakri children's hospital in Cairo, the ministry said.

A Health Ministry official said the boy contracted the virus from domestic birds raised by his family. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Thirteen of the 24 Egyptians who have contracted the H5N1 strain since last February have died. Most of the infected have been women or girls, who normally tend to look after chickens and turkeys kept in the backyards of Egyptian homes.

Egypt is on a main route for migratory birds, which are believed to have brought disease from Asia.

Since it began ravaging Asian poultry farms in late 2003, the H5N1 strain has killed at least 167 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Health officials worldwide worry the strain could mutate into a form that spreads easily from person to person, sparking a pandemic.

Yeah, we keep seeing the same governorates over and over again -- some of the 14 sus cases reported today are from the three governorates that the 17 were from -- Al Qalyubiyah, Al Gharbiyah and Dakahlia. However, there were also a couple of other governorates mentioned re. today's cases though -- Qina and Al Minufiyah.

To recap -- re. the 17 from the other day: 4 were from Al Qalyubiyah, 4 from Al Gharbiyah and 9 from Ad Daqahliyah [Dakahlia] (all those 9 were from the Nabarouh district where these two kids are from).

The 14 reported today are from Dakahlia, Al Gharbiyah, Qina, Al Minufiyah and Al Qalyubia. We've seen suspected cases from all of the governorates before -- and confirmed cases from quite a few (all?) of them, too.

To add to this, there were also 6 (although the headline said 7?) more reported on Friday (March 9th) -- 3 from Al Gharbiyah and 3 from Dakahlia....
