The 14 reported today are from Dakahlia, Al Gharbiyah, Qina, Al Minufiyah and Al Qalyubia. We've seen suspected cases from all of the governorates before -- and confirmed cases from quite a few (all?) of them, too. . .

Dakahlia, Al Gharbiyah, Al Minufiyah, and Al Qalyubia all have had confirmed human cases. I don't think Qina has had confirmed human cases.

Avian influenza - situation in Egypt - update 8
12 March 2007
The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No.3 (NAMRU-3).
The 4-year-old boy was from Ad Daqahliyah Governorate. He developed symptoms on 7 March 2007, was admitted to hospital on 8 March and his condition remains stable. The boy was exposed to sick birds during the first three days of March. Contacts of the boy remain healthy and are being closely monitored.
Of the 24 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 13 have been fatal.

New Confirmed Human Case of Avian Influenza in Dakahliea Governorate
11 March 2007

Case number: 24
Gender: Male
Age: 4 years
Governorate: Dakahliea
Occupation: Child

Specimens: Pharyngeal swabs and serum specimens. First samples were taken on the 8th of March 2007; second samples were taken and sent to NAMRU-3 on March 10. All samples were tested positive for influenza A virus matrix, H5, and N1 genes in both, the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories and NAMRU-3.

Date of onset of symptoms: 7 March 2007

Clinical history: the patient was admitted to Mansoura Chest Hospital on 8 March 2007 and transferred to General Manshiet Al Bakri Hospital in Cairo on March 10. Treatment with Tamiflu started on March 8, 2007.

Prognosis: His condition is stable and still alive.

Exposure status: the sick child had a positive history of contact with dead birds during the first three days of March (1, 2, and 3 March 2007). Throat swabs were taken from direct and indirect contacts. They are still under surveillance and healthy until this date.

This brings up the total number of confirmed human cases of avian influenza in Egypt to 24 with 13 deaths.
