I missed number 45. Goodness, Ft. Bend County is home. And Texas Children's Hospital is where my daughter is treated for her CF.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Yep, Lady Thud, just saw that the first Oregon death was reported today - in Marion County (Salem, Oregon), spoke of underlying condition as usual, a woman who was hospitalized for 8 days then died. No other facts yet, ie age, etc.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Thanks for the welcome :)

On a post by Shiloh, it also mentions a sixth death being reported by the Arizona State Health Department, but it gives no individual details, so I don't know if you would want to include until more information comes out...

Flu cases still widespread
Arizona health officials blame abnormal numbers on swine flu

by Ginger Rough - Jun. 9, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

The onset of June and the Valley's typically high summer temperatures usually spell the end of Arizona's flu season.

Not this year.

State health officials are still reporting widespread flu activity, a very atypical occurrence they attribute directly to the novel H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, that first appeared in April.

"I've been doing this for 20 years, and I can't ever remember seeing widespread flu in the middle of June," said Will Humble, interim director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. "It's not just in a little pocket here and there, it is across the whole state."

The "widespread" designation essentially means that flu activity is at the highest level of a five-rung scale used to monitor the influenza virus; it occurs when at least half the regions in the state report lab-confirmed cases of the illness.

Typically, Arizona's flu season begins just after Thanksgiving, peaks in February, and subsides in late May. In recent years, the state has confirmed anywhere between 1,600 and 5,300 influenza cases, depending on the severity of the season.

This year's season was on track to follow that path until the H1N1 virus showed up on April 29.

The state reported widespread flu activity from mid-February until the first week in April, when the number of confirmed cases began dropping. But once the H1N1 strain appeared, flu activity shot back up to widespread, where it has remained for the past five weeks.

The state now has 580 laboratory-confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus; which equates to about 11 percent of the state's overall flu activity. To date, Arizona's health officials have recorded 4,877 flu cases and six flu-related deaths.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

I don't know Lady Thud. I looked all over for information on a sixth death in Arizona and couldn't find anything. Should we consider it a typo in the article? or maybe we should keep a separate tally of suspected deaths on this thread. What do you think would be a good way to handle it?

technically Death #37 - Texas , 43 year old in El Paso County reported on June 5 was "probably swine flu" not 100% confirmed like the others. but he was confirmed at the hospital, so I included him. should I have put him under a separate listing as a suspected death, and wait for more info?

thoughts?

Pinal County Public Health & State Confirm H1N1-related Death

Main Category: Swine Flu
Also Included In: Flu / Cold / SARS; Public Health; Respiratory / Asthma
Article Date: 09 Jun 2009 - 5:00 PDT

Pinal County Public Health officials have received confirmation that a 64-year-old woman who died last week was positive for the H1N1 virus. The woman had underlying health conditions and was being treated for pneumonia at the time of her death.

This is the fifth death statewide related to the H1N1 virus and the second death involving a resident of Pinal County. The total number of confirmed cases in Arizona is 580 as of 2 PM on June 4.

"Prevention is a key component to disease control," says Tom Schryer, Director of Pinal County Public Health. "One of the best things you can do is to frequently wash your hands with soap and warm running water for at least 15 to 30 seconds. People who are sick with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least seven days to minimize contact with the public. If you have to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose and promptly dispose of used tissues."

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to other forms of influenza and can include sore throat, coughing, fever, chills, fatigue or head and body aches. Diarrhea and vomiting may also occur.

The H1N1 virus strain currently being monitored in the United States is a new type of virus never seen in people until it was discovered recently. Influenza viruses are constantly changing and evolving, which is why researchers develop new flu vaccines each year.

I don't know if we should start a different category for suspected death one reason is that I think an attempt is already starting to be used like this statement I read in one of the articles about the two resent El Paso deaths "Although the decedents tested positive for H1N1, it is not know at this time what connection if any the virus played in their deaths." I noticed that this language becoming more common and I am afraid that they may change it to died of Asthma bla, bla bla bla then later in the article the mention the decedent was diagnosed several weeks ago with a mild case of novel flu:tiphat:.......(or something similar)
