FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - June 5 - June 26, 2009

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

I know this is a lot to ask, but is there any way you can indicate whether or not the person was stated to have "underlying conditions," and what those underlying conditions were, if the info was provided?

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/update.htm

The Friday CDC Update is out - they list 45 deaths and the only one that looks like it's new is the CDC lists one death in South Dakota. The other differences from our totals follow:

AZ (-1)
CT (-1)
MI (-1)
NY (-5)
OK (-1)
SD (+1)
TX (-5)

Total difference - 13 (58 Flutrackers Count - 45 CDC Count)

Thank you appleblossom for doing this!

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

no problem, happy to help out. Anyway I have to do something productive with my insomnia.

All those details I posted came off that PFI spreadsheet. there are "underlying conditions" listed there as well, so I will go back and see if I can add that to our list.

Hey can someone help me out? Someone put up this article on PFI:

Swine flu kills Brooklyn middle school student; Sarah Michel first NYC student to die from H1N1
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/06/12/2009-06-12_swine_flu_kills_brooklyn_middle_school_student_sarah_michel_first_nyc_student_to.html?page=0

They think it was the 5-24 year old in NYC reported yesterday, but I don't have that on my "details" list. So which of the NYC listings is wrong?

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

South Dakota? really... I just googled it and no news articles came up. the SD Department of Health has the following info up on their website:

South Dakota H1N1 Case Reports as of 6/5/2009

(updated every Friday)

Confirmed cases
13
Negative tests
3,257
Hospitalizations
0
Deaths
0
Confirmed cases: Beadle (1), Haakon (1), Lincoln (2), Minnehaha (7), Turner (1) & Union (1) Counties
Age range: 4 to 46 years of age
Gender: 7 male, 6 female

http://doh.sd.gov/H1N1CaseCounts.aspx

So we're due for an update from them today. I guess I'll wait for that before I put up our new numbers.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

but I'm inclined to think the CDC didn't "make it up". If anything they seem to be lagging on their reporting.

It's worth it to keep an eye on this one--they are doing further testing to confirm cause of death.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

The Madison Heights police officer who died didn't have Legionnaire's. This was published in the Detroit Free Press today:

In addition to influenza, Chris Settlemoir said his brother tested positive, initially, for Legionnaires' disease. But University of Michigan and Macomb County health officials said further testing confirmed he didn't have the disease, which typically is caused by bacteria found in warm water, like in hot water tanks or air conditioning systems.

More tests will be conducted during the autopsy, Chris Settlemoir said.

Ryan Settlemoir, who became a Madison Heights officer in 2002, was hospitalized June 1 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township with flu symptoms and respiratory problems. He was airlifted to the U-M Medical Center on June 2, Sagan said.

According to officials from U-M, the general cause of death was lung failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple-organ failure.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Has anyone noticed how closed mouthed the Department of health officials have become since the beginning of the month regarding flu deaths?

Like you, I have been trying to obtain information on the victims, their clinical course and cause of death. This information was not great in May but it has dried up in June. For instance, now the NYC officials only give an age range but not their gender or any pertinent information.

What do you suppose is going on? Why all the secrecy?

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

NYC learned their lesson with Mitchell Weiner. Isn't it odd how we could go from publishing a man's picture in the paper as an NYC swine flu victim, to the kind of press we're seeing now? "unidentified adult 18-65 years old" ... they might as well not even release the info at all, it's meaningless. I think it was the Weiner family coming out and saying the official story that Mitchell was in poor health was b.s.

So now we don't know who the victims are, and there are no (or at least fewer) families to disprove the official point of view that everyone dying was sick to begin with. And conveniently there's now no potentially scary reporting of perfectly healthy people dropping dead of swine flu.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Yes, it is a very disturbing development. Information control of this magnitude and under these circumstances is reprehensible.

And guess what, the director of NYC DOH is now the head of the CDC. Does that give you a warm and fuzzy feeling?

GW

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

I've been wondering what might happen if someone were to set up a website on which family members of victims could post information about their loved ones' experiences with H1N1...
