thanks so much to everyone for your patience and help sorting out Texas and California, especially Thebes for the CA county list. You're hired! Night shift starts at 7:00PM

I added Bexar County man to our confirmed list, so Texas total is now 15. I also added in all the mystery deaths in California. Cristian Torres Rodriguez and the elderly Sonoma County man on our suspected list may have been confirmed with those new additions.

The state total somehow got off target again, so I had to adjust the individual listing numbers upwards +1.

I also removed T. Scott Cunningham from our suspected list, since it seems like most of the comments on him are leaning that way.

I read something the other day that really chilled my blood. WHO says our Pandemic 6 is at "severity level 2" which they define as, among other things, 90,000 to 450,000 deaths in the U.S. alone.



I hope that's not what we're looking at here, but if it is, I don't think there's any way to accurately document individual deaths on such a massive scale. I'm already struggling and we're still under 200.

in 1999 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention modeled a moderate pandemic in the United States, including a vaccine in its calculations, and concluded that the death toll would probably be 89,000 to 207,000. If the virulence of this virus does not significantly increase -- and right now there is no reason to think it will -- something close to the lower number looks probable.

Since they go out of their way to report any pre-existing conditions, for purposes of my tracking chart when there is on information given I assume that individual had no underlying conditions and therefore they add to the percentage of healthy people. With all of these new ones we are at 48%.

The CDC's weekly update shows Oregon with 3 deaths. I couldn't find any news articles reporting on it.

OK, Michigan is confusing me.

Although their website says the 7 deaths include only 1 in Detroit and 2 in Oakland County, this new article from today's Detroit News says there are 2 in Detroit and 1 in Oakland.

I think because the Oakland Co. spokesperson only talks about 1 death that the news article is right & the website is wrong.

From the article:

The swine flu has claimed two other Michigan residents, putting the state's death toll at seven, according to state health officials.

The latest victims are a man in his 40s from Oakland County who died Saturday and another person from Detroit.

More information was not available as the state is no longer releasing information to the public.

"Now, as we accumulate more deaths, which is unfortunate, we're leaving it up to the local county health departments to funnel that information out," said James McCurtis, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Kathy Forzley, manager of the Oakland County Health Division, did not release details about the man but did say "he didn't appear to have any classic underlying health conditions" like asthma, obesity and diabetes. A spokesman from the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion could not be reached.

I'm hoping not to add to the confusion here.
I am certain that in the days prior to the new list on the Michigan DOH website being posted, they had amended the initially-reported (6/18/09) Oakland Co death to belong to Detroit Co. Hence, before the current report, there were no Oakland deaths and 1 Detroit death.
I believe the reporter at Detroit News may not have seen the amended report from a few days ago. So, they deduced that the new additions to the current list came from a death in Oakland and Detroit, rather than 2 new deaths in Oakland.
Unfortunately, the MI DOH did not maintain the notation they initially posted on their website from a few days ago.

apploblossom, when you post these case summaries, can you reply to the original message in the thread? This thread has gotten so big it is becoming difficult to find everything. Okay, she answered.
"I spoke to the Oakland Co. Health Division last week for my story about the five deaths and they confirmed one was from Oakland County. I spoke to the same manager yesterday and asked about the second confirmed Oakland County death."

She is pretty sure that it stands as she reported it.
I can't imagine having hallucinated the amended report (I added it to my notes), but I guess anything's possible.
Still it would be good to hear from the Detroit health dept as to whether their death is new or from 1 1/2 weeks ago.

I guess we should hang back on Michigan until we hear from the reporter about Detroit vs. Oakland County.

What about Illinois? They're reporting death #11 and 12 today, but adding those 2 onto our Illinois list makes 13. None of them are repeats as far as I can tell.
