look at the list above, notice the clusters of reports in certain states? are they switching to once per week reporting?

Texas and Utah both are reporting weekly. Many states that have not reported deaths yet have gone to weekly case reporting.

I'm stunned that the media hasn't picked up on the fact that the number of deaths in the U.S. are well over 130. They are still quoting the CDC's figure from last Friday.

I haven't seen anything about the flu in our local paper in weeks and none of the major newspapers appear to be reporting on it in their online editions.

No one but appleblossom et al. takes the time to collect the reports from around the country.

Reporters work on a short timeline, and they are really pressed for time now with so many media outlet lay-offs.

If it matters, the MI DOH had changed the previously reported male death (age 44) from 6/15/09 (reported 6/18/09) from Oakland Co to Detroit Co a few days ago. So, both of these 2 new deaths are both from Oakland Co.
I tried to pull up their old table, but they've replaced last week's page with the current one.

Illinois and Arizona among others are only reporting weekly as well. The US has the highest number of reported deaths in the world. I think more than once a week updates are called for under these circumstances. When the CDC went to once a week, I suspected the states would follow suit.

ME: Second person dies of swine flu
June 24, 2009

A 26-year-old Yonkers woman has died of H1N1 swine flu, making her the virus's second fatality in Westchester county, the medical examiner said today.

The woman was admitted June 14 to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers and later transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where she died Tuesday, the medical examiner's office said. Her death certificate lists H1N1 swine flu as the cause, officials said.

The Westchester County Department of Health, the agency charged with monitoring swine flu cases, said this evening that it could not confirm the swine flu death.

"We don't have enough information to confirm or deny the ME's report," spokeswoman Caren Halbfinger said.

On June 9, a 29-year-old Yonkers woman became the county's first swine flu death. There have been 77 cases of swine flu in Westchester, 3 in Putnam and 14 in Rockland, according to New York state health officials.

cutter, thanks for catching the change in location in the Michigan death. I've edited the details list to correct it.

for the second death in Westchester/Yonkers... if things continue on as they are with fatalities, I can foresee a time when the health departments would not be able to keep up, and official press releases would start trailing behind reports from other sources.

So do we want to consider reports of H1N1 deaths from other professional medical sources as "confirmed" ? (coroners, medical examiners, hospitals etc.)

The woman was admitted June 14 to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers and later transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where she died Tuesday, the medical examiner's office said. Her death certificate lists H1N1 swine flu as the cause, officials said.

The Westchester County Department of Health, the agency charged with monitoring swine flu cases, said this evening that it could not confirm the swine flu death.

"We don't have enough information to confirm or deny the ME's report," spokeswoman Caren Halbfinger said.

On June 9, a 29-year-old Yonkers woman became the county's first swine flu death. There have been 77 cases of swine flu in Westchester, 3 in Putnam and 14 in Rockland, according to New York state health officials.

So do we want to consider reports of H1N1 deaths from other professional medical sources as "confirmed" ? (coroners, medical examiners, hospitals etc.)

Yes.
I would trust the ME and hospitals' info more than the health dept, unless one was awaiting post-mortem virus status results.

The ME is (should be?) a public official and so far as I know can make the official pronouncement of the cause of death, therefore what they state can be considered to be correct (and perhaps much more so than a PR person).

sorry Jim I was waiting to see what people thought of Westchester death #2 only being confirmed by the medical examiner. My comment on it probably got buried in all the data I put up afterwards. thanks to everyone who gave me feedback.

skatman thank you! ... if you knew what my SAT math score was you would cry I added the state totals 3 times and I got 3 different answers but I'm going to say.... my total was wrong by +1 ?

so 4th death in Pennsylvania would be #133, and New York Yonkers death is #134 ???

I agree with Cutter and Wotan. As our intent is to keep a running total of US deaths as they occur, and with many states and the CDC only posting weekly updates, we should accept any official report and add them to the total. If "confirmed" cases are later refuted, we can always adjust our total.

I would say yes on the Westchester question.

I have not seen the 4th in Pennsylvania.

A pregnant 24-year-old woman died May 24 and a 42-year-old man died May 19.

El Paso County has had 244 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu to date, city health officials said.

Yes, but more than that, the ME is an MD who has access to the medical records, dialogues to some extent with the MD who cared for the patient, and also has the body to examine and test. Public health people sit in offices.
