FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - June 5 - June 26, 2009

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

The 2 separate reports of 7 dead in NYC are accurate as far as I know. Each group is also described the same way as "hospitalized in late May" which has made me wonder if they have a big backlog of deaths that they are reporting in batches. 7 dead and then 3 days later 7 more dead seems too orchestrated somehow.
The NYC website clearly states 30 dead, after the second batch of 7. Not only do the two batches have the same number of fatalities, but they don't give individual ages or underlying conditions (because there are NO underlying conditions - those with underlying conditions were released earlier).

expected, however, hospitalizations and fatalities continue to occur. As of June 19, the Health Department had recorded 748 hospitalizations and 30 deaths. The latest deaths occurred in persons aged 26-64.

thanks niman. I missed the age range 26-64 the first time around. I will update our details list.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

I keep checking around the web on other lists to see what we've missed. This is how we are currently matching up to other websites:

Wikipedia is reporting 112 deaths, all state totals match ours.

Monotreme on PFI Forum is reporting 113 deaths, lists 2 in Washington to our 3 (missing Seattle). His/her individual numbers total 111. I don't know what the other two U.S. deaths are. Worldwide the fatalities are now 241.

Sky on TimeBomb 2000 is reporting 110 deaths as of Friday 6/19/09 9:00PM I'm not sure what is missing, the list is organized by order of death not by state. This is a really really excellent list. Every death has a small synopsis and an associated news link.

flucount.org is reporting 104 U.S. Deaths as of 6/20/09 8:34 AM and lists 10 in Illinois to our 11, 3 in New Jersey to our 4, 30 in New York to our 36.

Market Ticker is still listing new deaths but is not counting them as far as I can tell.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Readymom, thanks for pointing that out! The article is dated 6/4/09 and only describes the person as a "Milwaukee adult" with a common underlying medical condition.

Could this be Wisconsin Death #1: Milwaukee 27 year old woman, Andrea Morgan, died 6/3/09 reported 6/4/09 *common underlying condition, sought treatment 5/31, sent home?

Appleblossom, I'm don't think so. But sure could be wrong. Some of this gets confusing, till you 'Google' and dig for a few more news items. This is why I've been keeping track of news stories w/each fatality ... 'just in case'.

Check out these two threads I have: (I noted some snip clues, below from the reports)

It's the first reported death from the H1N1 virus in Wisconsin.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

2 Additional suspected cases for Arizona...

The Arizona MMWR's list the 08/09 first pediatric death on Feb 21 which is a type b. They list 6 additional deaths for April, May and June. 5 of these are type A and 1 is B.

We officially have 3 pediatric deaths reported, 2 for May and 1 for June. They list the 1 for June. That leaves 2 unaccounted for Type A deaths in April and May.

Since the odds of these type A deaths not being H1N1 related are slim to none, they should probably be marked suspected Arizona Deaths.

Also... the 4 month old child who died, #7, is definitely not the suspected infant death. The MMWR lists that as a new death which occurred in the month of June.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Hey cutter, if you have a list going why not share it on the thread?

As far as I can tell the most current reporting on the Yonkers woman is still 6/11/09.
Her cause of death is pending autopsy. Should I pull her and put her on the suspected list?

appleblossom,

1. Happy to share info from my list, but it?s essentially the same as yours. I don?t want to overload anybody with redundancy. Besides, I?ve thrown everything into a single, unwieldy word doc that is both tabulated and annotated with random source excerpts, etc. Anyway, not sure if it adds anything to your list. I?ve gained more info from you than the few tidbits I was able to provide.

2. I would definitely keep the Yonkers woman on the list (at least she?s stuck on mine). The ME and Health Dept would not have become involved unless her clinical course resulting in her demise would lead the MDs to believe it was consistent with a swine flu death.

3. Did you include the Sonoma County, CA male that was reported last night? There so much info here this AM.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

it looks like we're going to have to make some collective judgement calls here. How do we want to handle discrepancies between media reports and official press releases? The reporting of fatalities is so vague that this is bound to happen more and more. It would be easy to discard some of the earlier Wisconsin articles listing an additional "first" Milwaukee death as typos, but we have already had a situation like that on this thread. In Arizona the media leaked a number that I thought was a typo because I could not confirm it, and it turned out to be real.

Does anyone want to offer some guidance on dealing with these kinds of discrepancies? Should we stick to official numbers, or should we include any and all media numbers when they are higher?

Sorry, my post was confusing even to me. Here it is in simpler terms...

2/21 - 1 death (Not H1N1)
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb160809.pdf

5/17 (3 deaths - 2 suspect H1N1 deaths)
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb200809.pdf

5/24 (2 suspect H1N1 deaths)
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb210809.pdf

6/13 (1 suspect H1N1 deaths)
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb230809.pdf

Total of 5 suspect pediatric H1N1 deaths reported by state of Arizona. Subtract the 3 confirmed pediatric deaths and there are 2 suspect deaths remaining.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Pflu, is this right?

5/17 (3 deaths - 2 suspect H1N1 deaths)Arizona Death #3 & #4?
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb200809.pdf

5/24 (2 suspect H1N1 deaths)

6/13 (1 suspect H1N1 deaths)Arizona Death #7?
http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/oids/epi/fl...uweb230809.pdf

And then we would describe the 2 suspected deaths like this? :

Arizona - pediatric influenza A death, reported week of 5/24/09

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Should we stick to official numbers, or should we include any and all media numbers when they are higher?

I think you should continue to follow the media reports with the kind of common sense you have been, ie if they sound very ambiguous, continue to list them as suspicious deaths until a more definitive report comes out.
Many of the state and county health departments seem to be heading towards more delayed reporting by batching the death counts, or generally avoiding disclosure. Plus, I'm sure all of the confirmatory labs are being inundated with specimens to process, further delaying a final official report.

To me, if you have a period of at least a few days of hospitalization, with positive viral culture results, and a clinical course that points to a swine flu cause, it is more than likely to be confirmed by post-mortem exams. So, I would include those cases as definitive.

I agree with Cutter, the official sources are all clamming up and have lagged way behind what is being reported in the media.

The only possible twist to this presentation that could be of use is to show the "official" tally in contrast to the media "verified" tally. The value of this display would be to provide the community with a measure of how much the official figures lag those reported by the press.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

cutter and doc thanks for your input. I think (?) the wisconsin articles may have been typos since the official state tally is still matching ours a couple weeks after they were published. Only time can answer that for sure.

gsgs that's a good question. are you wondering if it's becoming more virulent? it's certainly killing people faster now. 2-4 days after developing symptoms for some.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Yes, more people are dying quickly, after only 2-4 days, but mightn't that be because more people are sick? If the number of cases is rising exponentially, then the number of people infected over the last few days to a week (i.e. one doubling period) could be equal to all the people infected before that time. More infections means more quick deaths, and, eventually, more slow deaths as well.

I have been tracking this state by state, but with most of the states with the highest numbers of reported cases no longer testing unless the cases are serious, it can give the false impression that there are higher hospitalization and death rates based on case numbers.
