The Fairbanks, Alaska fatality has been linked to Washington State. Looks like she was the one in Spokane:

#8 Spokane County, woman in her 40's, 8th death in Washington, died 7/16/09 reported 7/27/09 *multiple underlying health conditions, visitor to Spokane, died while hospitalized

So I've removed the Alaska listing from our database and edited the Washington listing to reflect her state of residence. The cool thing about the database is that, if you search for "Alaska", her listing will still come up even though she is officially listed under Washington. It does the same thing with the Pennsylvania woman who died while visiting Florida, shows up if you search either Pennsylvania or Florida.

Something important I forgot to mention for anyone who still wants to have a text version of the U.S. fatality details, to post on other web forums or for their own personal use. The database has a download option which allows you to export the case listings to your computer in several different formats, including text, RSS, javascript, and a comma seperated value format compatible with spreadsheet programs like Excel.

To get an updated text version of the U.S. list, click on "United States (US) H1N1 Fatality List (Sorted by State)", then click "Other Formats" in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and choose "Text" Your browser will open a new window with the entire list in text format. The listings will display like this:

is there a list of deaths with genbank sequence-numbers assigned
to them, where available ?

That would be useful to know if maybe some strains are more deadly
than others.
We could surveille+quarantine those stronger, to manipulate
evolution towards milder strains.
We could impose travel restrictions to areas with more virulent
strains.

However, if a case is deadly it could also be genetics or
special conditions or weather or such.
We need to know...

we do need to know. I wish we had more information about these fatalities than we do. it feels a bit like we are flying blind into a brick wall, so much for "the age of information" I guess. but all we can do is try to share what little information is available about these cases.

I don't know if the U.S. sequences are available or how to find them if they are, gsgs that is more your specialty than mine. but there is a way to put sequence information on our database if it is known.

ABC7 News has confirmed that one of the people who died of the H1N1 flu this spring was a pregnant woman from Marin County and her family claims local health authorities were ill prepared to save her life.

The family has kept a low profile since 33-year-old Jaime Norman died, but with the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warnings about the H1N1 virus, they have decided to speak out.

Norman went into the hospital 29 weeks pregnant with flu symptoms -- she never came out. But doctors were able to save her baby. Her baby, Jack, was born nearly two months premature. She held him, her first and only child, just once before she died of the swine flu. "She was at least conscious enough that to know that they had put him on her stomach and touch the hands so there was some contact for about half an hour," Norman's husband Eric Sheldon said.

Norman was Marin County's first swine flu death and her family has questions about whether health care workers were prepared to treat her illness. "Totally the lab had not any experience in H1N1, they thought it was H1N3," Norman's mother Barbara Norman said. Norman checked into the emergency room at Marin General Hospital. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and ultimately swine flu. "I can't be angry because they were fairly out of the loop where most of the cases were happening," Barbara Norman said.

CDC researchers said Wednesday the swine flu has been especially devastating to pregnant women. Expectant mothers who catch the virus have a higher risk of serious illness and death. Fifteen women in the country died of swine flu between April and June; it is unknown how many more, like Norman, have died since then.

After being born so many months early, baby Jack is doing well and expected to be released from Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley in about three weeks.
His father is looking forward to it, but with sadness. "I believe when Jack does get home from the hospital that's when it's going to really hit home that I'm by myself," Sheldon said.

First swine-flu related death reported in Riverside County

The Riverside County Department of Public Health this month reported its first death from a swine flu-related illness, local officials said.

Barbara Cole, the department's disease control director, said Wednesday that a Riverside County man, who suffered from several health problems, died earlier this month while he was out of town. Local public health officials were notified and investigated the death of the man, who Cole would not identify. They confirmed around the middle of the month that the man suffered a swine flu-related death, Cole said.

She said she doesn't believe the man spread the virus to anyone else before his death.

In June, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health reported one of California's first swine flu-related deaths -- a man in his 40s who died at his home. It is the only swine flu-related death that the county has reported to the California Department of Public Health, records indicate.

Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare, San Bernardino County's public health officers, couldn't be reached Wednesday to determine whether more deaths had occurred.

The state's most recent report from July 23 shows that 61 people across California have died from swine flu related illnesses. More than 580 people have been hospitalized statewide.

A total of 30 people with confirmed cases of swine flu have been hospitalized in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Cole said the department continues to monitor possible swine flu cases, especially people who are hospital intensive care with flu-like symptoms. She didn't immediately know if any such cases exist.

"There has been some of that kind of testing," Cole said. "That's one of our main focuses."

Well the latest Texas death will be complicated to list. She is a native of Texas, but died in California. She was 41, and died in San Diego making it quite likely she was #365 listed in CA today.

Check this over and see if you agree. I am NOT going to list this as a Texas death at this time unless some of you can find indications she was not included in the CA report.

If this is #365, at least we will have some details to attach to that report.

I am going to reduce my number for Texas back to 27.

source: The city of Laredo now has its first swine flu related death.
The health department says they are almost 100-percent sure the Laredo native didn’t contract the virus here in town, she later died on vacation.
Today at a press conference Doctor Hector Gonzalez announced that a 41-year-old Laredo woman has died from swine flu.
According to doctor Gonzalez the woman left for a cruise out of San Diego, California on July sixth and died July 20th.
In the events leading to her death she went on the cruise and then stayed in San Diego to visit her sister.
She began feeling ill and went to the emergency room…
There she learned she tested positive for influenza H1N1.
Her condition continued to worsen and she later developed pneumonia.
San Diego’s medical examiner also confirmed she was positive for swine flu.
She died approximately 14 days after contracting the virus.
