Jim, well no wonder they stopped reporting in New York. This is what I had when I gave up trying to find NY info:

So if there are 25 fatalities outside NYC, we've only got 19 accounted for. 6 new ones.
And I doubt seriously that there have been no additional deaths in NYC in the past two weeks.

Also, when I responded to the gentleman who sent me the information to thank him, I asked him if the State would be posting the total number of deaths on their website and he responded that they will not. So, I guess we'll have to call them weekly if we want the information.

I have not had any luck with NYC. Any ideas on who to call?

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Jim, I have no idea what to tell you with NYC. And to be honest, I don't know how you got as far as you did with NY State. I get the feeling they don't want this information getting out there, so once they catch wind that their weekly emails to you are ending up on the web, they'll probably clam up.

Tim Sturm is the first one on today's list, #316

PSA: tomorrow is my birthday so don't be offended if I don't show up to work ;)

Will we be able to keep this count up? The cdc has stopped counting.

If we used the CDC we be at least 40 cases behind. The real question is will local health departments stop as well.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Now that the US CDC and the WHO has taken the position that current reporting of both cases of the novel strain and deaths from it are no longer needed, the work on this site has become even more important.

The accounting done here and by our sister flubloggia sites of the number and circumstances of deaths due to the novel strain may well be the only published indication of the path of the pandemic.

For this reason, it is more important than ever that the work done by Appleblossom and his or her collaborators on FT and Ready Mom and the others on our sister sites continue.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

FT policy - posted on July 20th -

"...It is our spirit. They have seen what is in our hearts and they have come.

It is in this spirit that we continue to track individual cases. We know these numbers represent only a fraction of the actual cases but they are a window into what is happening.

Our only real hope of finding out what this virus is doing around the world.

Detailed information about clinical presentation, treatments, patient contacts, underlying conditions, etc. are almost never reported in news reports. The tracking here is not confined to strict definitions of ?an infected case?. We track all kinds of infectious diseases, often based only on suspected cases. Sometimes we find that some infectious diseases are misidentified or diagnosed incorrectly. Sometimes we find critical information in non-English language sources.

Through the diligence and perseverance of FluTrackers members and other posters in flublogia we find trends that may not yet be recognizable to public health officials that are struggling to interpret their local or regional data...."

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

well I had a wonderful day off, but I don't care for the birthday gift from the CDC. We've never used their numbers here, but lots of journalists who write H1N1 articles quote the CDC statistics, so that's a pretty unfortunate situation for the media.

personally I think the CDC decided to pull a fast one while flu news in slow and people aren't paying much attention. I could imagine if they waited to make an announcement like that in the midst of fall pandemonium, when people are scared and looking for information, it wouldn't go over well.

so here are the updates I missed from yesterday....

I've listed the Suffolk County, NY death as NY #73, I don't think it's a repeat of one of the "no location" deaths reported to Jim by email, because the date of the death is the same date the email was sent.

I strongly agree with The Doctor. I can understand the discontinuation of the counting of the number of cases, but the posting of the number of deaths is extremely important to give an idea of clusters and whether a more lethal strain has emerged. It also gives information about what geographical areas to avoid and when one should be more cautious. I pass a sign each day that says FIRE RISK....with an arrow indicating : low, moderate, high, or extremely high. The death rate is our "fire risk" sign.

I find it very helpful that the new reported deaths for a state are in red. Is that for that week? If so, that gives an indication of possible clusters or more lethal mutation.

In the 1918 epidemic, information about the lethal strain that emerged in July and August was suppressed because of the war. Many civilians died because soldiers (the lethal strain began in the military camps) carried it around the country and into the cities. The deaths were covered up and likely more people died than would have had they know the danger.

You can bet that the CDC IS keeping track of deaths. They have just decided not to share it with US. FluTrackers is performing an extremely important service. We need to use the social networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) to get feedback from individuals whose family members or patients have died of H1N1. State health departments (particularly those with high death rates) are becoming more parsimonious with the death information (notice the frequent lack of gender, specific age, etc). If things start to worsen, there will likely be pressure on the media to control the flow of information so that a particular state's economic interests will not be adversely affected. That is why local feedback from nurses, doctors, the families/loved ones/friends of victims will become so important. It will alllow us to compare the information to that from the state health boards and that carried in the media and draw our own conclusions about the level of risk.

You are all doing an awesome job and it will be ever more important in the months to come. Please don't get burned out. Ask the rest of us for help any time you need it.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - July 13+

Rainbow Lake, thanks for the nice comments :)

I have been highlighting the cases that are new (to me) each day the details list goes up. So the red highlighting would include new cases posted that day, plus cases posted the previous day after 5 PM. To get an idea of new cases per week you would have to scroll back and check the old lists too.

Several FluTrackers members are currently working on a database of info on global fatalities, which allows sorting and searching so that the data can be organized and viewed in many different ways. At this time we have 290 of our current 353 fatalities in the U.S. listed on the database, and I expect the rest of the info will be up shortly. There is a chart which shows U.S. deaths organized by report date, with a red trend line showing how the overall deaths are increasing or decreasing each day, which may answer your questions on risk and increasing virulence.

I am waiting for the "all clear" from our database organizer to make the link available to the public, but as soon as I can I will post the link to the U.S. info in this thread to give everyone access to what we are doing. it ought to be an excellent resource in addition to the info posted here on the forum.
