FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Here are more details for the case we have recorded as:

#422 New Jersey - Gloucester County, unidentified person reported 8/5/09 on NJ DOH website

This report has the sex, age and date of death.

http://www.courierpostonline.com/ar...--is-Glouco-s-1st-swine-flu-death-?FORM=ZZNR3

A 66-year-old man from Clayton is the first Gloucester County resident to die from swine flu, according to state and county officials.

The man was an in-patient at the University of Pennsylvania health system in Pennsylvania where he died, according to spokespeople from the state health department and Gloucester County.

Tom Slater, a state health department spokesman, said the man died June 24. Slater and county spokeswoman Deb Sellitto said the man's swine flu death was confirmed via a Pennsylvania state lab and that the man had underlying medical conditions.

Slater said that has been a consistent element for the state's other 15 swine flu death victims. He said the state health department won't release the man's name, consistent with state policy.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

6th death in Contra Costa county. The database only lists 5 so this hasn't been entered yet.

A man with no pre-existing health conditions has become the sixth person to die from swine flu in Contra Costa County.

County officials declined to reveal details, except to say that he died Wednesday.

At least 114 county residents have been hospitalized with swine flu, otherwise known as the novel H1N1 virus.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

I believe this is the 11th death in Michigan.

http://bx.businessweek.com/swine-fl...kYW60fAG8/jackson_county_has_died_of_swi.html

A 54-year-old Jackson County man has died as a result of swine flu, or the new H1N1 virus, Jackson County and state health officials said today.

The man had the third confirmed case of the disease reported in Jackson County, said Dr. Donald Lawrenchuk, medical director of the Livingston and Jackson county health departments.

Lawrenchuk said he could not release personal or specific information about the man's case, but said he had been hospitalized for "quite some time because of his status."

The man died July 29, said a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Community Health.

As of July 30, 10 deaths were reported in Michigan, according to the state health department.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

hey Jim, thanks for catching my error with Florida, and MedTroll thanks for all the updates. It seems like Florida and California are experiencing an uptick in H1N1 fatalities, possibly a preview of what's in store for fall. I have to admit that I lack the intellectual stamina to keep up with the scale of what we're facing. And now that health officials have had all summer to practice obscuring and confusing the facts, I'm beginning to confuse myself trying to keep it all straight.

I initially joined FluTrackers and started this U.S. thread because I felt the information provided by public health officials on an emerging global pandemic was not adequate, and seemed geared toward fostering complacency and apathy in the public. I thought that access to better information would be the best way to motivate people to protect themselves and prepare for potential supply disruptions. But the people that were going to learn about H1N1 and prepare for the fall have done it by now, and for the rest.... I can only hope that the flu fizzles out and goes away, or that the available vaccines will be safe and effective. We are out of time. School is starting in a couple more weeks, and the wolf is at the door. Perhaps the time to prepare and learn has passed us by.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I personally feel that I've done what good I could do with this project. If I gave up most of my summer to even help one person, it was enough. Continuing to track fatalities into the second wave is merely an academic exercise for me. If people haven't been convinced of the seriousness of this pandemic by now, then nothing I say or do here will make a difference for them. I know there are plenty of FT members who would disagree with that statement, and maybe you rightly feel that it is never too late to inform and help people. If there is anyone out there who wants to continue the U.S. count, you have my blessings to take the reins. No doubt there are plenty of forum members who could do a far better job with it than I have.

I feel very strongly that all of our hopes and fears about H1N1 will soon be resolved for better or worse. Either H1N1 is "just the flu" like we've been told all summer, or it isn't. If the future I am expecting comes to pass, people will not have to look to websites like ours to learn about flu. it will be right in their communities, schools, and homes all too soon. And prepared or not, this is going to be a difficult winter for all of us.

Joining FluTrackers and being a part of this project has been inspiring to say the least. I've gotten to know some wonderful, selfless people and have really developed a healthy respect for the amount of hard work and dedication involved in maintaining a website like this one. I have to hand it to you all, you've created an amazing and comprehensive resource for the public good, and I am proud to have participated in it.

Best of luck to everyone, stay safe this flu season.

Thank you Appleblossom, and everyone, for all that you have done.

We are tired. I know I am.

I think everyone should gear down in August. Take time off from posting. Enjoy the next few weeks before school starts. Take time for your family, friends. Read a book.

The work done here is done no where else in the world.

Not WHO.

Not the CDC.

Not anywhere.

Reliable and public.

For our near ones.

For strangers we will never meet.

For many of us - we fell into this path. I know I did not plan to do this.

Somehow we were drawn by the need. The knowledge that if we do not do it - no one will. All of us - on all the flu forums. The small body of world scientists, scholars, moms and dads, public health authorities, health care workers who are spreading the word probably number less than a 1000.

Less than a 1000. Out of 6 + billion in the world.

A very profound and sobering realization.

It is this group that is responsible for all of the progress made to date.

Thank you to all - especially the families who generously contribute their loved one to this endeavor.

You are all humanitarians.

Thank you for taking a chance with us. For being part of the dream that regular people can make an impact.

That one person can really make a difference.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Many thanks to all who work on Flutrackers. I check this site every day; my extended family and I are much better prepared for this winter than if these truths were not told. I live in Wichita, Kansas where H1N1 has scarcely been mentioned. Even the woman's death this week from H1N1 was downplayed as much as possible in the local news. Unforgiveable really.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Very well said Florida1.
I am tired also.

Thank you appleblossom. I know you won't be gone completely. And I'm sure I'll bump into you down the road.

Thanks appleblossum. Your contributions have been tremendous. Though I have to say your presence will be missed even more than your contributions.

It has been quite a privilege to work with you on this thread.

I agree.

The presence, the spirit is what we emphasize.

We encourage people to drop out and drop in.

You will always be welcomed back with open arms. Today, tomorrow, next week. Next year.

It does not matter.

There are no posting expectations on FluTrackers.

The most important thing to us is the happiness of your spirit.

I agree it has been a real privilege - an honor.

Everyday when I log on I am in awe of all of all the monikers I see listed at the bottom of the page. I know the sacrifice that is being made. I know I am one of the luckiest people on earth.

To be able to associate with such a fine group.

Thank you again.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Appleblossom, thank you again for all your tenacity and hard work. You do fabulous work.

I would like to reiterate Fla1. It looks like this fall may be very stressful indeed. It would be wise to try to decompress. If you can, take a breather now. I am going camping for a week. I hope others can do something to help alleviate their stress. Sunburn, woodsmoke and mosquitoes will be a welcome change.

Thank you. I have used your source on numerous posts on "The Other" trackers site. I know it was a lot of time and energy. You did a FANTASTIC job!

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

You're awesome appleblossom. I have enjoyed working with you. I'm taking a week off starting tomorrow and going away with the family. I'll be back trying to catch up.

As of today, I stopped counting cases and am only counting deaths abroad, as well as deaths and hospitalizations in the U.S.

Sadly, as many predicted, the number of deaths to track is pretty much the same as the number of cases being tracked two months ago. The case counts aren't very meaningful anyway, given the number of places where they are no longer reported.

Have a great week everyone.

Appleblossom - I do hope you'll pop in once and a while and say hello.

Dear Appleblossom,

The contribution made by you and the other principals on this thread has considerably advanced our understanding of the pandemic as it unfolds in the US. The information provided here is truly unique. We can not obtain it from any other source.

I agree with you that in the event the pandemic becomes severe and the CFR increases dramatically, then continuing this count would be meaningless. However, what will be key is to see the rise in deaths in an exponential manner that will precede the pandemic becoming severe. So, for this reason, I hope you will continue your surveillance effort for our benefit as this change in the number of deaths will be the most informative data we have available since TPTB have determined to deny this information to the public on a timely basis. When dealing with a pandemic, time is of the essence.

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Thank you Appleblossom, JimO and all who have contributed to this monumental task. I have relied on it a great deal in trying to educate people, and it has been helpful to me in that effort. I have constantly been amazed at the work you all have been willing to put into this for such a long stretch of time--not something I could have maintained. Y'all are special people! :tiphat: ;) .

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

If I gave up most of my summer to even help one person, it was enough.

I believe you helped many more than one!

I tracked similar stuff (mine was the more obscure suspect stuff) along side you in the early stages, and have much appreciation for exactly how much work this entails. I just wanted to let you know that I understand more than most how much research and time you spent maintaining this thread.

I'm quite sure your data will be used and has likely already been used as a true reference to the severity of Swine Flu. I would bet that the president himself has seen these figures as reference data in some way.

Congratulations and nice work!

Re: FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - August 1+

Seeing this info in black and white (sometimes red) has opened the eyes of some of my coworkers -RNsetc. It is startling to see all the specific listings in front of your eyes. All my ramblings didn't go far, and here this thread on paper got their notice. Thank you!
