So, in the age of genetics and remote RNAs comparisons, we should have an old, good, XIX century bacteriologists lab!

Which is why the lack of confirmation here is so frustrating and concerning.

TOBRUK - height - Libya today
The Libyan News Agency reported that the World Health Organization praised the health measures taken by Libya to contain the incidence of limited disease, the plague appeared in one family in "Trcp" popular Batnan.

Has Khbayrmen WHO, visited the region, "Trcp" that the disease, and suspected cases of bird flu and reviewed all the reports and actions taken in this regard.

One expert said the organization "Dr." Eric Perth "in a press conference on Saturday Batnan Medical Center" The preparations and the work currently under way in the region well and the level required at the discretion of the World Health Organization. "

The Libyan medical specialists in this area have dealt with four cases of suspected bird, which appeared in the same family, who provided appropriate treatment to it after it entered the hospital on the seventeenth of this month, has now recovered these cases.

The plague disease, the world's leading expert said: "The preparations have been taken in conformity with the standards required in the organization."

He also briefed on the isolation of suspected cases of medical status and methods of treatment and control, which confirmed that it is in the level of the World Health Organization.

The world's leading expert during the press conference, a brief history of the disease and hot weather and environmental factors that might show a natural phenomenon occurring in all parts of the world.:tiphat:http://tinyurl.com/l2ds4m

What is going on in this article? I just reread it carefully. They aren't mentioning bubonic plague at all. They are saying suspect bird flu. It seems they are just calling the bird flu "a plague", not talking about Y. Pestis infection. I this in addition to suspected plague cases? Or has the working diagnosis changed? I'm confused.

We ALL need to take a much closer look at the post in #132. My reading of it shows no mention of bubonic plague, and instead mentions suspected bird flu.

Have they changed the suspect diagnosis from plague to H5N1?

Pneumonic plague and H2H H5N1 would look a lot alike in the absence of laboratory diagnosis.

True, but the word plague is often used to mean outbreak (as in the Biblical plagues), and need not refer to infection with Y. Pestis. I wonder why there are multiple references to suspect bird flu in that article.

I supposed that they debated with WHO about multiple illnesses (plague/new fllu/avian flu/AIDS/... in the region at once.

"Bacterial poisoning" in other text is maybe an eufemism about previously cited/supposed cases of septicemic plague, all from rat/fleas provenience.

If a product of an initial old agent leakage, it can be stil plague, carried by rats/rabbits/flies.

I think the story about leakage an old agent is bull, made up by an Egyptian blogger for politcal reasons. If it is plague, it is almost certainly nautral as plague has occurred there before.

I think you're right that the bird flu is a separate issue from the plague. Libya has not reported any human H5N1 cases. That article in #132 mentions four cases of suspected bird flu in the same area as the "plague" cases (which would explain the discrepancy in the dates). Then again, all four cases have recovered, in less than four days, so some other flu is likely there. After all, while Libya might not be able to distinguish plague from H5N1, Egypt would.

That was a bad scare there for a few minutes.

Re: Illness in Libya (poss. plague) & Ministry of Health in Egypt is Preparing Procedures

18 June 2009
Plague is a preventable and curable disease if diagnosed in time
Plague is a bacterial disease, caused by Yersinia pestis, that primarily affects wild rodents. It spreads from one rodent to another by fleas. Humans bitten by an infected flea usually develop a bubonic form of plague, which is characterized by a bubo, i.e. a swelling of the lymph node near the flea bite site.
Plague is a disease that triggers the use of the decision instrument for the assessment and notification of events that might constitute a Public Health Emergency for International Concern under the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR 2005). On 14 June 2009, plague was reported in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in the Tobruk area, a known focus of this disease. Accordingly, the Government of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya conducted a preliminary assessment and notified WHO about the occurrence of plague cases.
Immediate measures were taken by the local authorities including collaboration with relevant sectors, spraying of the infected areas, strengthening surveillance activities, broadcasting educational messages to the public and treating all cases.
A senior expert from WHO, together with the Libyan authorities, is currently in the field to initiate a wide-scale investigation and assessment and assist in setting up an effective response system to contain this outbreak quickly. According to IHR 2005, WHO will provide further public health information once received from the field.
Treatment
Rapid diagnosis and treatment is essential to reduce complications. Effective treatment methods enable almost all plague patients to be cured if diagnosed in time. These methods include the administration of antibiotics and supportive therapy.
Prevention
The objective of preventive measures is to inform people to be aware of the areas where zoonotic plague is active and to take precautions against flea bites and handling of carcasses while in plague-endemic areas. People should avoid direct contact with infective tissues and exposure to patients with pneumonic plague.
Vaccination
Plague vaccines were widely used at one time but have not proven to be an effective approach to timely prevention of plague. Vaccines are not recommended for immediate protection in outbreak situations. Vaccination is only recommended as a prophylactic measure for high-risk groups (e.g. laboratory personnel who are constantly exposed to the risk of contamination).:tiphat:http://www.emro.who.int/pressreleases/2009/no14.htm

#152: "Stances and the World Health Organization citizens to avoid direct mixing of contaminated tissue infection or exposure to patients with respiratory plague."

Another news text unclear statement:
- how an ordinary citizen would istantaneously know if it is exposed to "respiratory" plague
- at the same time in the text is cited:
"
People who are exposed to the bites of infected fleas bubonic plague"

So, or the above in the cited text are only generic WHO guideliness for awareness to generic possible appearance of various plague types of illnesses in the area,
or
there are both bubonic and respiratory (not primary) versions there.

In an area without fences, wroted to be freely roamed some time, if the respiratory one is present, there will be maybe more illnesed, to not mention that some texts (post news text #131) negated the human to human (primary respiratory) plague there.

Several points. First, those are generic guidelines for dealing with plague (Y. Pestis) patients, not necessarily the ones in that area. Secondly, as someone posted early in this thread, pneumonic plague can be a complication of bubonic plague that is untreated, which can then spread to others. If the outbreak is as old and widespread as the Egyptians believe, and if it is due to plague, both types are likely present by now.

And by respiratory plague, they mean droplets from the cough of someone who has plague, whether their infection was bubonic or primary pneumonic.
