THE FINNISH INSTITUTE for Health and Welfare (THL) has reported that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases stands at 359 in Finland, signalling an increase of 40 from Tuesday.

THL on Wednesday announced it is updating its reporting practices on the epidemic and switching to using the infectious diseases register for monitoring the total number of infections, meaning there is no district-specific data for Tuesday.

The total number is also affected by the fact that not all suspected cases are tested for the virus because many hospital districts have decided to focus on testing certain key groups, such as the elderly, people with serious respiratory symptoms and health care professionals.

HELSINKI — The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare confirmed on Saturday the country’s first coronavirus death, saying that an elderly patient in the capital had died.

“Finland’s first coronavirus death is very unfortunate, but not surprising,” it said.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country amounted to 521 on Saturday, the health authority added..

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Police and the Finnish army set up roadblocks on all routes that connect Helsinki with the rest of the country, while Finland’s parliament approved the plan at the last moment to enforce the capital region’s coronavirus blockade by midnight on Friday.

Finland’s government decided on Wednesday to issue a three-week blockade of the region around Helsinki, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in Finland, to prevent people from travelling and spreading the virus elsewhere in the country. The coronavirus death toll in Finland has risen to nine as two more people died-one in Helsinki-Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) and one in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa (OYS) Hospital District- in the last 24 hours, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) said Saturday.

Pekonen said there was no shortage of kits nationally, but noted regional differences in availability, the report added.
