12.4. 15:25 Holiday weekend behind smaller rise in infections


The Easter holiday weekend is likely the reason why Finland reported fewer new novel coronavirus infections on Sunday than on previous days, according to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, THL.

At 69, the number of new lab-confirmed infections on Sunday was relatively small compared to Saturday, when 136 new cases were registered.

THL infectious diseases and vaccinations unit chief medical officer Hanna Nohynek said that people are less likely to seek medical help on public holidays. "What we know about all infectious diseases, whether it's influenza or the RS virus, is there is always a lull," she noted.

Nohynek also pointed out that there may also be a delay between the transfer of information between labs and the infectious diseases register, where Covid-19 cases are now being reported. "But to say that the actual number of infections is declining, I really doubt that," she observed.

Finland reports highest death toll on the same day Uusimaa reopened


THL reported 8 more deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, 6 of them in the Helsinki-Uusimaa region.

THL has disclosed a few details regarding the age of 37 of the dead. There are two dead between the ages of 40 and 59, 13 between the ages of 60 and 79, and 22 over the age of 80. The median age of the dead is 81 years.

Among the deceased, 70% are men and 30% are women.

According to the National Institute for Health and Welfare, 155 new confirmed coronavirus infections have been diagnosed in Finland.
A total of 4,284 confirmed cases have now been identified.


The number of new infections started to rise in Finland, as 146 infections were reported on Tuesday and 115 on Wednesday.
The latest infection figures are based on information from the Infectious Diseases Registry, which is updated with a delay of a few days.
There are a total of about 70,000 samples tested. Not all suspicions have been tested, so it is assumed that there are actually more infections.

According to Wednesday's data, at least 149 people had died of the coronavirus disease in Finland.
