Corona Virus May Have Entered the Arctic

Two persons from a Chinese family have arrived to northern Finland from Wuhan, China by way of a transit in Norway, according to Finnish TV, says Norwegian broadcaster NRK. There is suspicion that the two are infected with the corona virus, which has killed 26 people so far. Another 830 cases of disease have been documented, Chinese authorities confirm.

"Tests from the two will be taken Friday morning", says Chief of Infectious Diseases Markku Broas at Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi to YLE. The Chinese tourists have been to Lapland for a couple of days and sought medical assistance in Ivalo.

Broas says the tourists traveled via Norway to Finland on their arrival. They came from Wuhan, where the new corona virus has its source. He further says to Finnish news agency STT that the two most likely suffer from a different disease and argues that the Finns need not worry.

Finland: 1st 2019-nCov case confirmed in Lapland, a tourist from Wuhan, China

A Chinese tourist who was admitted to hospital for tests after showing symptoms was confirmed to have the deadly new strain of coronavirus that has so far killed more than a hundred people in China.

Markku Broas from Lapland Central Hospital said that the tourist left Wuhan province five days ago. The province, which is the epicentre of the current outbreak, was shut down soon afterwards by Chinese authorities trying to stop the spread of the disease.

The tourist is said to be a female aged 32 and in relatively good health. She sought medical attention in Ivalo when symptoms first appeared. Samples were taken after a transfer to Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi. Tests conducted in Helsinki confirmed the infection.

Officials from the National Institute for Health and Welfare, THL were scheduled to host a press conference at 6pm on Wednesday.

A tourist was found infected by the corona virus at Lapland Central Hospital

29/01/2020

A tourist has been found to be infected by the corona virus at Lapland Central Hospital. The tourist is currently isolated. The tourist comes from Wuhan in China. This is the first confirmed case in Finland.

“It was expected that illnesses related to tourism would also occur in Finland. The risk is still small that the disease is spreading in Finland, so you do not have to worry, ”says Mika Salminen , director at THL.

The Lapland Medical District and the local health authorities continue to manage the situation together with THL. About 15 people may have been exposed to infection. The medical district is following up on their health status.

“We have prepared for any cases in Finland. The health care and laboratories have ready-made business models. The hospitals have good preparedness to investigate and treat coronavirus infections in isolated conditions, ”says Salminen.

THL keeps up with the international situation and updates the following website with current information:

Health officials say that contracting the disease from persons showing no symptoms of infection is unlikely.

The number of people possibly exposed to Wuhan coronavirus has risen to 24 from a previous estimate of 15, according to Lapland hospital district infectious diseases specialist Markku Broas.

The Lapland hospital district said on Thursday that while the majority of persons potentially exposed to the disease are foreigners, some Finns are among the group. According to Broas, one of the persons exposed to infection has already left Finland for Asia. Officials in the destination country in question have been informed about the situation, he added.

Health officials were expected to decide on possible quarantining of the exposed persons on Thursday. Current guidelines are to only isolate patients exhibiting symptoms.

"We are considering the possibility of quarantine for people possibly exposed. That would mean preparing a private space where they can be monitored to see if symptoms emerge. This will be decided during the course of the day," Broas told Yle’s Aamu-tv breakfast programme.
Difficult to reach affected persons

Officials were able to contact some of the affected persons on Wednesday when Finland’s first coronavirus case was confirmed in Lapland. The task of identifying persons who may have been exposed has been complicated by the fact that most of them are travellers...

Two new coronaviruses hit Saturday in Lapland - had attended the same travel event as a Chinese woman in treatment

The Lapland Central Hospital was able to reach two more people exposed to the coronavirus on Saturday, says Markku Broas, chief of infection at the Lapland Hospital District . In Saariselk?, those exposed to the virus were both reached from Rovaniemi.

- Quarantine arrangements are carried out on a case-by-case basis. The quarantine facility can be a homey place to monitor for social contact, and to monitor daily for symptom and heat, says Broas.

Those exposed have participated in the same travel event as an infected Chinese woman who is being treated at a central hospital in Lapland. It was possible to register for the event by first name or nickname, so it has been difficult to ascertain the identity of many of the participants.

Health authorities have searched for a total of 22 people who were traveling with an infected woman at a travel event. 10 of them were reached on Friday. In addition, among the 24 exposed, there are two members of the medical staff who are in home quarantine.

According to Broas, a woman who is infected with coronavirus is doing well. The woman's well being is monitored and possibly sampled early in the week. Once the recovery is confirmed, the woman gets out of isolation.

According to Broas, there are currently no known or suspected cases of coronavirus infection in Finland. On Friday, the Lapland Hospital District analyzed samples of three people who had been exposed to the virus for a long time and confirmed that they were negative.
