In early November, a dead fox was found in Hiiumaa infected with a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza strain. This is the first case of H5N1 in a mammal in Estonia.

This finding is worrisome, since the transmission of avian influenza from birds to mammals may indicate certain evolutionary processes and the development of the adaptive capacity of the virus, including the possibility of its transmission to humans.

In the meantime, according to a report by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), the bird flu virus is rarely transmitted to humans. However, the high pathogenicity H5N6 strain has already resulted in human casualties in China.

This strain has not been identified in Estonia, but H5N6 is genetically very similar to viruses found in birds from Europe.
