WASHINGTON (AP) ? The State Department has set up a telephone number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation Tuesday.

The toll-free number to call for information about family members in Haiti is 1-888-407-4747. The State Department advises that some callers may receive a recording because of heavy volume of calls.

Officials say the U.S. Embassy in the capital of Port-au-Prince is still in the early stages of contacting American citizens and notes that communications are difficult within Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake.

HAITI / THREAT OF NATURAL DISASTER / high seismic risk on Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince. "All the conditions are ripe for a major earthquake occurring in Port-au-Prince. Les habitants de la capitale ha?tienne doivent se pr?parer ? ce sc?nario qui finira, t?t ou tard, par arriver ?. Residents of the Haitian capital must be prepared for a scenario that will end sooner or later, happen. " Patrick Charles, 65 ans, g?ologue et ancien professeur ? l'Institut de G?ologie appliqu?e de la Havane, se d?fend d'?tre alarmiste. Charles Patrick, 65, geologist and former professor at the Institute of Applied Geology of Havana, denies being alarmist. Yet, there 'is not gone around the bush when Le Matin offered him the opportunity to respond on the record of seismic threat hovering over Port auPrince. The old researcher has answered our questions with the rigor of a university notified. In his view, the danger is imminent, "God thank you, science gives us tools that can predict these kinds of events, while allowing us to demonstrate our conclusions. C'est le temps et le hasard qui jouent en faveur de notre capitale. This is the time and chance to play for our capital. Une grande catastrophe plane sur notre t?te ?, pr?dit-il. A major disaster hanging over our head, "he predicted.
This is not the severity of Charles Patrick about that intrigues us, but his unshakable belief in his prediction. To convince us he does not hesitate to expose us a detailed course of geology, using very precise geological maps and their PC. ? Tiburon. "Port-au-Prince is built on a large fault that runs from Petion-Ville, crosses the entire southern peninsula, culminating in Tiburon. En 1751 et en 1771, cette ville a ?t? compl?tement d?truite par un s?isme. In 1751 and 1771, this city was completely destroyed by an earthquake. Je parie mes yeux que cela se reproduira. I bet me that it will happen again. La science peut ais?ment le confirmer ?, d?clare-t-il. Science can easily confirm it, "says he.
On the basis of knowledge and scientific data that has accumulated on the subject for several decades, Patrick Charles, as a good citizen, has something to rebel. The imminence of the danger becomes clearer with time and events. And to make his prediction, Mr. Charles takes the example of recent earthquakes recorded in recent days at the Haitian capital. ? "In recent weeks, the earth shook several times in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. Du 1er au 12 septembre, trois secousses mineures ont ?t? enregistr?es ? P?tion-Ville, Delmas, Croix-desBouquets, plaine du Cul-de-Sacc. From 1 to September 12, three minor tremors were recorded in Petion-Ville, Delmas, Cross desBouquets, plaine du Cul-de-Sacc. Le directeur du Bureau des Mines et de l'?nergie (BME), l'ing?nieur Dieuseul Anglade, a confirm? ces informations. The Director of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), the engineer Dieuseul Anglade, confirmed this information. Ces secousses mineures sont inqui?tantes. These minor tremors are worrying. Elles annoncent g?n?ralement des s?ismes de plus forte intensit? ?, avise-t-il. They usually announce earthquakes of higher intensity, warning there. Dieu merci, Patrick Charles n'est pas le seul int?ress? par le sujet. God thank you, Patrick Charles is not only interested in the subject. La question de la menace sismique sur Port-au-Prince est un sujet d'actualit?. The issue of seismic threat in Port-au-Prince is a hot topic. Elle a ?t? d?battue, ces derniers jours, par beaucoup de personnes, dont des intellectuels de haut rang. It has been debated in recent days by many people, including senior intellectuals. Les conclusions sont unanimes : Port-au-Prince risque bien de se transformer, du jour au lendemain, en un amas de ruines au terme d'une violente secousse tellurique. The conclusions are unanimous: Port-au-Prince may well be transformed overnight into a mass of ruins after a violent quake. ? Durantant deux si?cles, aucun s?isme majeur n'a ?t? enregistr? dans la capitale ha?tienne. "For two centuries, no major earthquake has been recorded in the Haitian capital. The amount of energy accumulated in the holes, it runs the risk of an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale. Better not talk, do not panic. But it would be a disaster, "admitted the head of the Bureau of Mines and Energy, speaking recently in the press. Le probl?me est pos? dans toute son acuit?. The problem is posed in all its acuteness. Des mises en garde sont r?guli?rement adress?es. The warnings are regularly sent. Mais les mesures ponctuelles s?rieuses tardent ? venir. But the occasional serious measures soon to come. En cas de violent s?isme au niveau de la zone m?tropolitaine, M. Charles ?voque deux sc?narios catastrophiques : un tsunami g?ant au niveau du Lac Azu?i, inondant la plaine du Cul-de-Sac ; la d?sagr?gation du morne l'H?pital. In case of earthquake in the metropolitan area, Mr. Charles evokes two catastrophic scenarios: a giant tsunami in Lake Azuei, flooding the plain of Cul-de-Sac, the disintegration of the hill Hospital. ? Dans les deux cas, le mal est infini. "In both cases, evil is infinite. Ce sont des choses tout ? fait possibles. These things are quite possible. The key is to take steps to mitigate their effects. I am ready to don the costume of a pilgrim to help my countrymen out of their lethargy, "says geologist.
Facing such a threat, very few preventive measures have been announced by the authorities. The bidonvilisation the hill Hospital and the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac, unregulated exploitation of sand Laboule continues inexorably. It should be noted the efforts of the EAR to install throughout the national territory of instruments to measure the magnitude of earthquakes. Recall, for our readers, that two major faults across the country. One at the northern and the other at the southern peninsula. All departments except the center, are exposed to the earthquake and tsunami. ? "The authorities are obliged to take specific measures to protect unpopular though some areas. Le bilan du passage des trois derniers cyclones sur Ha?ti interpelle notre conscience. The balance of the passage of the three recent hurricanes on Haiti challenges our conscience. Nous vivons une p?riode tr?s difficile et nous devons agir. We live a very difficult and we must act. Le compte ? rebours a commenc?. The countdown has begun. La nature nous demande des comptes. Nature asks us accountable. Il faut agir pour sauver ce qui peut encore l'?tre ?, soutient Patrick Charles. We must act to save what can still be, "says Charles Patrick.

UNICEF urgently appeals for aid for Haiti following devastating earthquake

NEW YORK (January 12, 2010) ? The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is urgently appealing for emergency assistance to aid the victims of a devastating earthquake that rocked the Caribbean nation of Haiti early today.

The quake, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale, triggered a tsunami warning for neighboring countries situated in the Caribbean Sea.

The earthquake was centered about 14 miles west of the capital city, Port-au-Prince and early news stories report of wide spread devastation.

Funds are urgently needed to provide safe water, temporary shelter systems, essential medical supplies etc. UNICEF's country office in Haiti and the regional office located in Panama has deployed emergency teams to assess the situation and determine what the additional emergency needs are for the people of Haiti.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and has a population of 9.6 million inhabitants, of which more than half are under 21 years old. UNICEF has been working in Haiti since 1949 and works directly with Haiti's government on developing long term solutions to current problems caused by poverty and lack of basic health care, education and sanitation services.

The country has been suffering from long-term political strife and a severely depressed economy. In recent years the effects of the global food crisis and particularly strong hurricane seasons have left the country dangerously vulnerable. This catastrophe will only exacerbate the already critical situation for the people of Haiti, especially women and children.
To donate to the ongoing emergency relief efforts in Haiti and the Caribbean region, please visit: www.unicefusa.org/haitiquake or call 1-800-4UNICEF.

American Red Cross releases $200,000 in aid to help communities affected by earthquake in Haiti

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 ? The American Red Cross has pledged an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by today?s earthquake in Haiti, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation.

?Initial reports indicate widespread damage in Port au Prince, with continuing aftershocks,? says Tracy Reines, director of international disaster response for the American Red Cross. ?As with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.?

The American Red Cross has made available all of the relief supplies from its warehouse in Panama which would provide for basic needs for approximately 5,000 families. In addition, it is deploying a disaster management specialist to Haiti, and has additional disaster specialists on standby if needed.

The American Red Cross has an extensive partnership with the Haitian Red Cross, which is expected to lead the Red Cross response to the earthquake.

The American Red Cross has staff on the ground in Haiti who provide ongoing HIV/AIDS prevention and disaster preparedness programs. At this time, all the three American Red Cross staff in Haiti have all been reported safe.

The Haitian Red Cross was founded in 1932 and is one of the primary organizations in the country responding to disasters. Although earthquakes are less common, Haiti is frequently impacted by hurricanes including those in 2008, and the Haiti Red Cross has developed experience in disaster response due those disasters.

For more information and to schedule interviews, please contact Mat Morgan: morganmat@usa.redcross.org or 202-262-9148.

We are not accepting volunteers to travel to Haiti. If you would like to volunteer for the American Red Cross, please contact your local chapter. For inquiries about relatives living and who have citizenship in Haiti, please be patient and call repeatedly until the lines clear or contact other family members who live nearby. Telephone, Internet and other communication lines are often disrupted in times of disaster. People trying to locate U.S. citizens living or traveling in Haiti should contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225.

U.N. Building Damaged, Workers Missing in Haiti Earthquake

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
service_ap_36.gif

UNITED NATIONS ? The headquarters of the U.N. Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti sustained "serious damage" in Tuesday's earthquake and a large number of UN personnel in Haiti are unaccounted for, the U.N. peacekeeping chief said late Tuesday.

Alain Le Roy says other U.N. installations in the Caribbean nation were also seriously damaged. He says the U.N. Peacekeeping Department is still in the process of gathering information on the extent of the damage and the status of U.N. personnel following the "catastrophic earhquake".

The United Nations has a 9,000-strong peacekeeping force in Haiti, which has been there since a rebellion in 2004. The force has been credited with helping to curb violence and crime in the Western hemisphere.

Re: Earthquake Magnitude 7.0 - HAITI REGION - Ambassador to US says "likely catastrophic"

Tectonic Summary

The January 12, 2010, Haiti earthquake occurred in the boundary region separating the Caribbean plate and the North America plate. This plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression, and accommodates about 20 mm/y slip, with the Caribbean plate moving eastward with respect to the North America plate.

Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Hispaniola, one of the Greater Antilles islands, situated between Puerto Rico and Cuba. At the longitude of the January 12 earthquake, motion between the Caribbean and North American plates is partitioned between two major east-west trending, strike-slip fault systems -- the Septentrional fault system in northern Haiti and the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system in southern Haiti.

The location and focal mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system. This fault system accommodates about 7 mm/y, nearly half the overall motion between the Caribbean plate and North America plate.

The Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault system has not produced a major earthquake in recent decades. The EPGFZ is the likely source of historical large earthquakes in 1860, 1770, 1761, 1751, 1684, 1673, and 1618, though none of these has been confirmed in the field as associated with this fault.

Major loss of life feared after Haiti quake

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Haiti raising fears of many deaths in the Caribbean island.

Switzerland has announced it will send an intervention team to Haiti, leaving on Wednesday morning, to assess needs.

Haiti's worst quake in two centuries struck about 15 kilometres southwest of the capital Port au Prince, and was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.

Serious damage has been reported to the headquarters of the United Nations mission in Haiti and a "large number" of its personnel are reported missing.

The national palace and a hospital are among other buildings badly damaged, and rescuers are digging under rubble.

Haiti's envoy to the United States said it was a "catastrophe of major proportions".

The Swiss foreign ministry told the Swiss News Agency that Switzerland had offered its assistance to the Haiti government. Spokesman Lars Knuchel said the Swiss authorities weree in contact with the embassy in Port-au-Prince.

The US Agency for International Development has announced it is sending disaster response teams to Haiti.

French Official: U.N. Mission Chief in Haiti Believed Dead in Quake

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Reports now of heavy damage at airport - control tower may have collapsed. Although Sky News reported last night that a flight was reported by eyewitnesses to have left the airport just after the quake - that may have been an incorrect report or possibly the flight was committed to take off as the quake struck.

Scenes of devastation in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake

Some buildings collapsed, people panicked, injured in the streets and can be killed by the hundreds: Port-au-Prince, whose center has been "destroyed", according to a witness, was plunged into chaos after the powerful earthquake that ravaged Haiti on Tuesday.

There are thousands of people to wander, sometimes in tears, devastated in the streets of the city, uncovering every corner of new images of desolation.

"The center of Port-au-Prince is destroyed is a real catastrophe," Peter coward, covered with dust. He walked many miles to try to reach home.

Residents were forced to discontinue plans their homes and took refuge in open spaces. Somewhere where they are unlikely to be crushed by a collapsing building.

"They sleep outside because they are too afraid to sleep indoors because of the risk of aftershocks," says an official of Catholic Relief Services, Sara Fajardo.

A doctor bloodied, injured his left arm, says that "the dead will be counted by hundreds when it is possible to take stock.

Several television stations in South America have already aired footage of bodies buried in the rubble.

Some buildings have collapsed like a house of cards. Others are still standing but large cracks reflect the impact of the shock.
The presidential palace was seriously damaged and ministries around, while hospitals, hotels and schools have collapsed.
"The headquarters of the Mission of the UN Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) has largely collapsed. There are many people under the rubble, the dead and wounded," said a local employee of the organization .

In a street flooded by the dust, a teenager is wounded lying on the floor while they tried to treat her, as images of the Brazilian TV channel Globo. Later, a group of people trying to rescue a man whose legs were crushed by boulders, according to these images.

"I saw a lot of destruction in my path. I narrowly escaped the collapse of the office where I worked," says Marie Claire, used in a medical laboratory in Port-au-Prince.

Shortly after the quake, the night on the Haitian capital's devastated streets immersed in complete darkness, which only amplifies more the panic that gripped the population.

Vehicles of the Haitian police, UN or the Red Cross trying to transport the wounded but the houses destroyed block traffic.

Another difficulty for relief: the media calls have been seriously affected and cut electricity across the city. Most radio and television in the capital no longer work and a few radio stations broadcast emergency calls.

Several academic institutions have been damaged by shock and students were trapped under debris. "We were able to identify some people from the rubble, there are many wounded," said the head of a private institution on Radio Signal FM in Petion-ville, east of Port-au-Prince.In high school French in Haiti, many kids are stuck inside, often without news of their parents. "There are no victims, many people in the neighborhood came to take shelter in high school," said a teacher.

Many photos on the site of micro-blogging Twitter also show nightmarish situations.

On one of them, a girl covered with dust climbing out of a pile of debris. Another shows the bodies of two women covered with earth, lying in the back of a van. The photos also show the efforts by people to cope with the tragedy, start clearing the streets and rescue the victims. :tiphat:http://www.metropolehaiti.com/metropole/full_une_fr.php?id=16307
