Washington - Haitian President Rene Preval and his wife were unharmed by the massive earthquake that hit Haiti earlier Tuesday, according to the Haitian ambassador to the US.
The ambassador, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told CNN that First Lady Elisabeth Debrosse Delatour had spoken to his colleague in the US and reassured him that she and the president were OK.
But the presidential palace and ministry of commerce in Port au Prince, the capital, were damaged.
'If those buildings are damaged, can you imagine what has happened to all those flimsy abodes around Port au Prince on the hillsides?' Joseph asked.
He recalled his growing dismay over the unregulated building of shacks on the hillsides, and how he had written an article some years ago saying it was a 'catastrophe waiting to happen.'

(CBS) CBS News anchor Katie Couric spoke with Raymond Alcide Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States about a magnitude 7 earthquake that hit 10 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince - perhaps the strongest earthquake ever to hit the region.

Couric: What are you hearing about what has happened in Haiti from residents there?

Joseph: I was able to reach the secretary general to the presidency Mr. Fritz Longchamp, the only official I was able to contact. And he told me he was driving his car east from Port-au-Prince to a suburb east of the capital and buildings started to collapse on both sides of the streets so he had to park his car and start walking. And it was just at that instant that I found him. He said it is a "catastrophe of major proportions." That's his own words. And he told me he was not able to reach any official, not the president nor anyone. And he was walking to his place not knowing what was awaiting him, not knowing whether he could cross the bridge to get to his place. So, you know, it's hard reading.

Couric: Mr. Ambassador, we've been hearing reports that a hospital collapsed, that people are crying out under that collapsed structure. Have you heard anything along those lines?

Joseph: I spoke with somebody from World Vision while I was on the air on CNN and he was saying there was wailing, crying all over, dust rising up all over the place. So he also said that's all we can say because nobody can count the dead yesterday. But he said it's going to be a real catastrophe.

Couric: President Obama, Mr. Ambassador, issued a statement and said "my thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake, we're closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti." What kind of help and support might you need from the United States and other nations?

Joseph: You know, in the past, the United States came to our help. In 2008 we had four hurricanes that hit in a matter of three weeks and the United States had dispatched the U.S.S. "Comfort" to Haitian waters. Hospital beds aboard the "Comfort." And the southern command which is the U.S. military in Florida came to Haiti's support. Now I suppose the same thing can be done. I'm quite sure we will need everything. Somebody has just called me and talked to one of my colleagues to say they found out that the White House in Haiti, which you call the palace, is damaged. Also, the equivalent of the tax office, you know, I.R.S., is damaged. And there are some shantytowns around Port-au-Prince, around the hills, they have collapsed like cards.

Couric: Well, U.S. Ambassador Raymond Alcide Joseph, thank you for talking with us and updating us on this terrible situation in your country. We so appreciate it.

A Reuters reporter in Port-au-Prince said he had seen "dozens of dead and injured people" in the rubble of fallen buildings.
Karel Zelenka, a Catholic Relief Services representative in Port-au-Prince, told colleagues in the US "there must be thousands of people dead".
The aid worker had managed to phone his colleagues before communication links to the country failed.

The BBC's Nick Davies in neighbouring Jamaica says the ground apparently shook for more than a minute in Haiti.
Local people, he said, were using anything they could get their hands on - including farm equipment - to help release those trapped in the quake.
Our correspondent adds that, as the poorest country in the western hemisphere, Haiti is likely to need international aid in order to cope with the quake's impact.
'Three million affected'
US President Barack Obama said in a statement that his "thoughts and prayers" were with the people of Haiti and America stood ready to assist them.

"We are trying to get in touch with our people on the ground but we are experiencing communication problems, which is not unusual in a disaster such as this," spokeswoman Stephanie Bunker told AFP news agency in New York.
Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the US, told CNN: "I think it is really a catastrophe of major proportions."
He said he had just spoken to a government colleague in Port-au-Prince:
"He had to stop his car just about half an hour ago, and take to the streets, start walking, but he said houses were crumbling on the right side of the street and the left side of the street.
"He does not know whether he would reach his home, not knowing what he would find, because he had a bridge to cross to get there."
Mike Blanpied of the US Geological Survey said that, based on the location and size of the quake, about three million people will have been severely shaken by its impact.
"This quake occurred under land as opposed to off-shore, so a lot of people were directly exposed to the shaking coming off that earthquake fault, which was quite shallow," he told the BBC.
He added that as the quake had occurred near a highly populated urban area, the aftershocks could cause additional damage to already shaken buildings.
'Rubble and wire'
An Associated Press cameraman saw the wrecked hospital in Petionville, a hilly suburb of the capital, and Henry Bahn, a visiting official from the US Department of Agriculture, said he had seen houses which had tumbled into a ravine.

He said he had been walking to his hotel room when the ground began to shake.
"I just held on and bounced across the wall," he said.
"I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance."
He said rocks were strewn all over the place, and the ravine where several homes had fallen in was "just full of collapsed walls and rubble and barbed wire".
BBC News website readers in the Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti on the island of Hispaniola, said they had also felt the quake.
"My family is on the 8th floor of a tower in downtown Santo Domingo," wrote Max Levine.
"We felt a swaying of the building for 5-10 seconds. All the lamps were swinging. There was a 20-second pause and then another similar sway. We rushed out of the building with many others to the street." :tiphat:

Major Earthquake Hits Near Haitian Capital

A major earthquake and several aftershocks have hit the impoverished country of Haiti, causing buildings and homes to collapse in and around the capital city Port-au-Prince.

The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 hit Haiti Tuesday afternoon, and was centered about 10 kilometers west of the capital Port-au-Prince.

Witnesses reported that homes and buildings had collapsed, including a hospital in Petionville, a hillside Port-au-Prince district.

They said dozens of people were lying under rubble, while panicked survivors ran in the streets.

A member of the U.S. group Partners for Haiti, which does religious aid work, Kyn Tolson says she has been scrambling to get news directly.

"Our organization is trying to reach our mission house which is in Port-au-Prince," said Kyn Tolson. "It appears that cell contact and landline contact is either down or so busy that we definitely cannot get through. We are emailing all sorts of people too. We want to see if there are any problems first of all with our people in our mission house."

President Obama released a statement saying his thoughts and prayers were with the people of Haiti and that the U.S. government is ready to assist with aid.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It has been devastated in recent years by destructive and deadly hurricanes. nother major tragedy hit star-crossed Haiti Tuesday when a massive earthquake smashed the capital, knocking down hospitals, high-rises, ministries, churches and part of the presidential palace. Hundreds - maybe thousands - of dead and wounded people were believed buried under rubble.
"It's going to be a major catastrophe when we start to count the dead," said Haitian Ambassador Raymond Joseph.
Haitipal TV reported many of the downtown buildings had collapsed, including the parliament. The presidential palace was badly damaged, Joseph said.
He said he was told President René Préval was not hurt.
In the center of town, more buildings were down than standing, witnesses said.
"People were screaming 'Jesus, Jesus' and running in all directions," said Reuters reporter Joseph Guyler Delva. "It's total chaos."
A five-story apartment building was also said to have fallen down, with much loss of life.
The magnitude 7.3 quake hit near the capital Port-au-Prince, home to 2 million people, at 4:53 p.m.
Two powerful aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 on the Richter scale soon followed, further damaging structures weakened by the initial quake.
Haiti has been struggling to recover from a string of hurricanes that devastated the island in 2008, destroying the island's infrastructure and killing hundreds.
President Obama said the United States stood ready to help with the latest crisis.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake," he said.
The Red Cross pledged an initial $200,000 in aid. "We do have staff on the ground - we have not been able to reach them," said Red Cross spokesman Abbi Weaver.
Witnesses said the streets of the capital were full of panicked people, and screams were coming from under the piles of rubble seen everywhere.
People were clawing at the rubble with their bare hands, trying to save loved ones, witnesses said.
Power was out, radio was off-line and phone service was down. Haitians in New York City frantically trying to contact relatives back home were having little luck getting through.
There were reports the airport in Port-au-Prince was badly hit, which could hamper efforts to fly in aid.
Emergency meetings were being held at the State Department, which was having trouble contacting the Haitian government.
"We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "Our prayers are with the people who have suffered."
Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who is the United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti, promised his office was "committed to do whatever we can to assist the people of Haiti."
In Petitionville, where a hospital fell down on top of screaming patients, a visiting U.S. Department of Agriculture official said he saw a number of homes collapsed into a ravine.
"The sky is just gray with dust," Henry Bahn told the Associated Press.
"I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance."
Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere subcommittee, urged the administration "to do everything possible to help."
"This is the worst possible time for a natural disaster in Haiti, a country which is still recovering from the devastating storms of just over a year ago," Engel said.
A government analyst it was the worst quake to ever hit Haiti, which was last hit by a major magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984.

Leaders in the Haitian community felt powerless as yet another calamity has hit their native country. With no communication to Haiti in the last three yours, people called each other to see if anyone had heard anything.

The suspense is sending a chill as people try to imagine the extent of this catastrophe.

Four hours ago, a major earthquake shook the capital city to its core and left Port-au-Prince into a smoke haze.

At this moment, the number of death and people injured are not known. People could be heard screaming and crying. The metropolitan area is home to two million people in an area originally planned for 200,000. Houses are poorly constructed with lax codes, if any.

“The earthquake registered at 7.0- with an aftershock of 5.9. The palace has been severely damaged said, Frank Williams, national director for World Vision in Haiti.

“This is a catastrophe of major proportions, said Raymond Joseph, Haitian ambassador to the United States, on CNN The Situation Room. “The place is really bad now.”

Joseph made a plea for the world to come to Haiti’s rescue at this moment of intense grief.

An Associated Press videographer saw the wrecked hospital in Petionville, near Port-au-Prince, and a U.S. government official reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a ravine.

Don Blakeman, an analyst at the USGS in Golden, Colorado, said such a strong quake carried the potential for widespread damage.

"I think we are going to see substantial damage and casualties," he said.

Blakeman said Haiti had already been hit by many aftershocks, the two largest registering magnitude 5.9 and 5.5.

Major earthquakes in the area are rare but do occur. For example in Puerto Rico a 7.5 earthquake hit in 1918.

THIS MESSAGE APPLIES TO COUNTRIES WITHIN AND BORDERING THECARIBBEAN SEA...EXCEPT FOR PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS.... THE TSUNAMI WATCH IS CANCELLED ...THIS BULLETIN IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE
DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA ANDANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 2153Z 12 JAN 2010 COORDINATES - 18.5 NORTH 72.5 WEST LOCATION - HAITI REGION MAGNITUDE - 7.1EVALUATION A TSUNAMI MEASURING 12 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH WAS RECORDED AT SANTO DOMINGO IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND A TSUNAMI LESS THAN 1 CM CREST-TO-TROUGH WAS RECORDED ON A DEEP OCEAN GAUGE IN THE EAST-CENTRAL CARIBBEAN. BASED ON THESE DATA THERE COULD HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI WAVES NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER BUT THERE IS NOT A THREAT TO COASTAL AREAS FURTHER AWAY.

THEREFORE THE TSUNAMI WATCH ISSUED BY THIS CENTER IS NOW CANCELLED. FOR ANY AFFECTED AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS.
