An Ontario resident who recently travelled to East Africa is being tested for Ebola, according to the province's Health Ministry.

In an email to CBC News Wednesday, a spokesperson for Ontario's Ministry of Health said that the patient is being assessed in hospital. "Out of an abundance of caution" the person is being tested for a variety of infectious diseases, including Ebola, as they recently travelled to the region which is experiencing a large and deadly outbreak, the spokesperson said.

"All appropriate infection prevention and control measures are in place," reads part of the ministry's statement.

"There are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in Ontario."

The ministry did not say whether the person is currently experiencing symptoms or where in Ontario they are located.

Ebola in Ituri: Six patients flee after a violent incident at Rwampara Hospital

The response to the Ebola Bundibugyo epidemic was severely disrupted on Thursday, May 21, at the Rwampara General Hospital, located about ten kilometers from Bunia, in the Ituri province, following a serious security incident involving the relatives of a deceased patient.

According to several health sources, family members of a patient suspected of having Ebola forcibly retrieved the deceased's body despite opposition from medical staff responsible for applying health protocols related to the safe handling of remains.

The situation quickly escalated into clashes and scenes of panic within the hospital. Taking advantage of the chaos, six patients escaped, including three confirmed Ebola cases and three other suspected cases placed in isolation.

The facilities of the medical NGO ALIMA, involved in the response to the epidemic at the site, were also set on fire during the violence. Given the seriousness of the situation, medical staff were placed under military protection, while police forces were deployed to try to restore order around the hospital.

This incident highlights the significant community resistance faced by response teams in some areas affected by the epidemic. Health authorities reiterate that the unsafe handling of victims' bodies is one of the main factors in the spread of the Ebola virus.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health as of May 21, the Ebola Bundibugyo epidemic has already caused 139 probable deaths for more than 600 suspected and probable cases recorded across the country.

To date, there is no licensed vaccine or treatment against the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, further complicating efforts to control the epidemic.

Ebola in the DRC: Serious Incident in Rwampara; Patients Flee, Alima Facilities Set Ablaze

Thursday, May 21, 2026 – 1:51 PM

A serious incident erupted on Thursday at the Rwampara General Hospital, located approximately ten kilometers from Bunia in Ituri province—the epicenter of the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak currently sweeping across eastern DRC.

A suspected patient in the terminal stages of the disease presented at the hospital this morning. He subsequently died. Members of his family attempted to retrieve the body. Medical staff tried to dissuade them, but without success.

Six patients were under care at the facility at the time of the incident: three confirmed cases and three suspected cases, according to sources from ACTUALITE.CD. They have fled the site.

The facilities deployed by the NGO Alima at the site—including tents and medical equipment—were set on fire.

Alima staff members are currently under military protection. Police forces are attempting to contain the situation.

The handling of bodies and burial practices constitutes one of the primary vectors for Ebola transmission. Direct contact with the remains of a patient who has died from Ebola exposes loved ones directly to the virus.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment. As of May 20, preliminary figures reported 543 probable cases and 136 probable deaths, according to the Congolese Ministry of Health.

South Kivu: a suspected case of Ebola reported in the Miti-Murhesa health zone, tests in progress

Posted on Thu, 05/21/2026 - 13:06 | Modified on Thu, 05/21/2026 -

Patients received at the CBCA hospital in Goma (North Kivu) on Thursday, January 22, injured in the city of Sake, creating panic in the city.

The health alert is triggered in the territory of Kabare (South Kivu). A suspected case of Ebola virus disease, with a clinical picture of hemorrhagic fever, was reported in the health zone of Miti-Murhesa, about twenty kilometers north of Bukavu. The patient died and samples were rushed to Goma for in-depth analysis.

The patient is a young man in his twenties, recently arrived from the province of Ituri - current focus of the epidemic - accompanied by his wife and younger brother. Before being referred to the official medical circuit, the patient first consulted a private practice, then a traditional practitioner.

Faced with the worsening of his symptoms, he was finally transferred from the local health center to the Lwiro hospital, where he succumbed. "The man died with bleeding and a high fever," said Dr. Crispin Mutwedu, an epidemiologist at the Provincial Health Division (DPS) of South Kivu.

Secured bury and new suspected cases

Alerted immediately, the DPS's rapid intervention teams went to the scene to record the death and proceed with the essential biological samples. In order to avoid any risk of community spread, a dignified and secure funeral (EDS) was organized this Wednesday.

However, concern grows around the relatives of the deceased. His wife and little brother, in turn, began to develop characteristic symptoms, including fever and violent headaches. Their cases have been validated by the medical authorities for strict investigation.

Goma laboratories requested

A total of four biological samples were collected and centralized late in the evening in Bukavu, before being shipped to the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) based in Goma, North Kivu. The provincial health authorities now say they are "on the lookout" pending molecular results that will confirm or invalidate the presence of the virus.

Detroit-bound flight diverted to Canada after passenger from Congo boarded ‘in error' amid Ebola outbreak

The passenger shouldn’t have boarded the aircraft because of “entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus,” a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said.

A draft DHS memo directs commercial airline passengers who traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan or Uganda in the past 21 days to land at Dulles.
An Air France flight bound for Detroit was redirected to Canada after a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo boarded “in error” amid the Ebola outbreak in central Africa, officials said Wednesday.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said the agency took “decisive action” by prohibiting the flight from landing at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The flight departed from Paris and landed in Montreal, Canada, shortly after 5 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to data from tracker Flight Aware.

“Due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane,” the CBP spokesperson said in a statement.

The Montreal Trudeau International Airport directed requests for more information to Air France, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment…..

Ebola-infected American Medical Missionary Receiving Superb Medical Care in His Fight for Survival

BERLIN, GERMANY — May 21, 2026 — Leaders at Serge, an international Christian missions organization, are hearing from Ebola-infected American medical missionary Dr. Peter Stafford, who is now receiving superb care.

Peter shared, “Before I was evacuated I was feeling really concerned I wasn’t going to make it. And now I’m cautiously optimistic.”

Dr. Scott Myhre, Serge’s Area Director for East and Central Africa, says as of today, Peter is critically ill but not acutely deteriorating. “I was able to speak with Peter briefly by phone on the morning of May 21 and he reports he’s feeling better than he was yesterday and is beginning to eat small amounts of food. Peter is continuing to show the predictable sequence of Ebola signs and symptoms. He passed through the first days of nonspecific symptoms (fever, aches, fatigue), and has now passed into a phase with vomiting, diarrhea, and rash, with labs trending slightly in the right direction.”

“Peter has also received two intravenous treatments designed to improve Ebola outcomes,” said Dr. Myhre. “The German care teams rotate in 3 hour shifts since they must wear full-body hazmat suits as they care for him. We’re thankful for their dedication and expertise.”

Dr. Peter Stafford’s wife, Dr. Rebekah Stafford, and their four children landed in Berlin just before 10:00 p.m. local time and have moved into a separate space within Berlin’s Charite University Hospital. They are all asymptomatic and will continue to isolate and be monitored. Dr. Peter Stafford’s family was able to see him through a window and the hospital staff say they hope to provide that level of access periodically. Both Drs. Stafford say they were relieved to have had the opportunity to see each other and were finally able to have their first few hours of peaceful sleep following the window greeting.

Serge-Dr-Stafford-Family-ebola-transport-1024x768.jpg

The Stafford family leaving Africa

The Staffords’ colleague Dr. Patrick LaRochelle is now in Bulovka Hospital in Prague, in quarantine and being monitored, and he remains asymptomatic. Dr. Rebekah Stafford and Dr. Patrick LaRochelle had been potentially exposed by their work at Nyankunde and Bunia Hospitals in DRC.

Serge requests prayer:
  • for the full recovery of Dr. Peter Stafford, the sustained health of his wife, Dr. Rebekah Stafford, and their four young children, and for the sustained health of Dr. Patrick LaRochelle.
  • for two Congolese hospital colleagues who are now confirmed ebola-positive, along with so many others in the Congolese community who are sick or serving the sick.
  • for the rapid escalation of the international response needed to supply the Congolese with what is needed to stem the outbreak and save lives.
Out of respect for the family’s privacy, Serge requests that media outlets refrain from contacting family members directly or publishing images of the Stafford children.

Additional updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.

Congo red travel alert issued

May 21, 2026
The Government today announced it issued the red outbound travel alert for the Democratic Republic of the Congo based on public health considerations, reminding Hong Kong residents to avoid non-essential travel there.

The Government announced on May 17 the activation of the Alert Response Level in accordance with the Preparedness and Response Plan for Ebola Virus Disease. The relevant departments are fully prepared. Once a suspected case is identified, testing and comprehensive prevention and control measures will be implemented immediately in accordance with established protocols to prevent the spread of the virus in Hong Kong.

The Government emphasised that no confirmed cases of Ebola disease have ever been recorded locally. At present, the risk of Ebola disease is primarily confined to outbreak areas and the immediate public health impact to Hong Kong is currently low….

Ebola: "There is still a lot of work to be done," says Florent Uzzeni of Doctors Without Borders

Published on:21/05/2026 - 07:11

(audio)

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a response is being organized to the Ebola epidemic that has been affecting various areas in the east of the country for several days. The epicenter is in Ituri, where Florent Uzzeni, deputy head of emergencies for Doctors Without Borders – Switzerland (MSF), has arrived to coordinate his organization's response. He describes the scale of the needs, particularly in Ituri.

RFI: You have just arrived. What have you seen on site?

Florent Uzzeni: I've seen many actors here to provide assistance. I've seen coordination being established by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). But in concrete terms, there aren't yet any very effective actions on the ground. Ituri is remote. It takes a long time to get equipment and personnel to the region. There's a will for things to change, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

When you say there is still a lot of work to be done, what exactly is missing?

The most striking example is that today in Bunia, there is no more space in the various isolation wards of the health facilities. This means that if someone thinks they have Ebola or has symptoms, they cannot be admitted to hospitals or health centers because they are all full. One of the urgent needs is to set up treatment centers, to be able to test suspected cases so that they can either be treated at the center or sent home. This is a major problem today in Bunia and Mongbwalu.

When you talk about centers that are full today, which center are you referring to?

I'm talking about the isolation center at Rwampara General Hospital, but also about other smaller health centers, hospitals, and private clinics in Bunia that had a few beds for isolating patients. There's no more room to take in new ones.

Let's talk about Mongbwalu. What is the current situation there?

The situation in Mongbwalu is equally catastrophic, as the center that could accommodate these patients is full, and therefore the sick remain in the community, risking infecting others. This is our urgent priority, and the focus of all the work we are doing with the Ministry of Health to rapidly increase the isolation capacity for Ebola patients.

How many Ebola patients are currently at Mungwalu General Hospital?

Today, there are 24 patients hospitalized in this center. The numbers fluctuate regularly, but clearly, there is a need to increase, to double, to triple the capacity for treating patients with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Suspected cases also need to be hospitalized in specific isolation. We also have the problem that tests take a very long time to be sent to Bunia and processed. Patients occupy isolation beds for a long time before their serological status can be confirmed or ruled out, and therefore before they can be found to have the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

How long does it take for the tests to leave Mungwalu and arrive in Bunia?

It takes several days for the tests to be done. This is common at the very beginning of an epidemic. Now, things are speeding up, and we hope that by the end of the week, the process will be in place so that we have results in less than 24 hours, which is not the case today.

There are also two reports in Fataki. According to our information, MSF is also deploying teams for suspected cases.

We have teams that have been working for months in the Fataki refugee camp, a vast camp of over 65,000 people. Our teams, along with those from the Ministry of Health, have been involved in managing highly suspected cases of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Unfortunately, one case has died. Currently, we are tracing contacts to determine whether patients—those who have been in contact with this case—develop symptoms. We have set up a small isolation unit to potentially manage suspected cases. We urge all stakeholders not to forget the community's needs, which are not solely related to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. There are still pregnant women who need care, children who need vaccinations, and malaria cases that require treatment. These are real needs for the people of Fataki. Access to water is extremely limited. We call on all actors involved in this response to the epidemic to have a global vision and to provide healthcare to the entire population.

Ebola in the DRC: 159 deaths estimated and 626 suspected cases, announces the Congolese Minister of Health on RFI

The Congolese Minister of Health announced this Thursday morning, May 21, on RFI's "Appels sur l'actualité" program , a new update on the Ebola epidemic affecting parts of eastern Congo. Samuel Kamba reported 159 deaths likely due to Ebola and 626 suspected cases. The epicenter of the outbreak remains in Ituri province, in the provincial capital Bunia and the mining town of Mongwalu, Djugu territory, but cases have also been recorded in other areas.

Published on:21/05/2026 - 14:04

By : RFI
With our correspondent in Kinshasa, Paulina Zidi

Until now, North Kivu was the other province affected by the epidemic, with one confirmed case in Goma and two confirmed cases in Butembo. Now, South Kivu is also affected. The armed group AFC/M23, which controls part of the area, announced this morning that a case has been diagnosed in Miti, in the Kabare territory. A young man who had arrived from Tshopo, more precisely from the city of Kisangani, according to the rebel group's statement. Two of his contacts, who are also ill, have been placed in isolation.

In Ituri, the epicenter of the outbreak, the situation is complicated. " There is still no effective action on the ground ," Florent Uzzeni of MSF told us this morning. The Minister of Health, Samuel Kamba, acknowledges that there is significant strain on hospitals, but according to him, the first centers dedicated exclusively to Ebola patients must be operational quickly: " today or tomorrow ," he stated.

Less dramatic hemorrhages

The minister explained that this strain of Ebola, different from the one in Zaire that usually circulates in the country, is more difficult to detect. " For the Bundibugyo variant , confirmation is done by the laboratory. We cannot confirm it clinically, only based on symptoms ," Samuel Kamba explained to Juan Gomez on the program "Appels sur l'actualité" (Calls on Current Events).

“ Unlike the Ebola virus in Zaire, which we regularly see in our country and which is very dramatic, this one is less dramatic ,” the Congolese Minister of Health also explained. “ That is to say, it causes fever, a high fever, very high even. It causes vomiting, it causes diarrhea. (...) This is what is seen in many other diseases, for example, malaria. And then, hemorrhages can gradually appear. ”

It's also difficult because not all laboratories can detect Bundibigyo. Indeed, not all INRB laboratories in the country are equipped for it; they are equipped for the Zaire strain. For now, we can at least rely on those in Kinshasa, Goma, and Bunia. But the pace of testing doesn't allow for the confirmation of all cases. For example, it takes several days for tests to leave Mongwalu and be processed in Bunia.

Subject: Enhanced Ebola Airport Screening Begins at Washington-Dulles International Airport
Date: May 21, 2026 1:58 PM

Media Statement

For Immediate Release

Thursday, May 21, 2026

Contact: CDC Media Relations

Enhanced Ebola Airport Screening Begins at
Washington-Dulles International Airport

On May 18, 2026, the CDC issued an Order suspending entry to the United States of foreign nationals who were in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days before arrival. U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents who were in these countries within 21 days are permitted to enter the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted a federal register notice, available here, that outlines the redirection of these affected travelers to Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD) beginning 11:59 p.m. May 20, 2026, for enhanced public health screening.
CDC will conduct the enhanced public health entry screenings for these travelers and confirm their contact information for public health follow-up if recommended. Travelers that have been in the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan in the 21 days before their flight, and are scheduled to travel to the United States, while screening is taking place will be contacted by their airline to rebook travel to IAD.
To date, no suspected, probable, or confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported in the United States, and the risk of Ebola domestically is low. However, public health entry screening is part of a layered approach that, when used with other public health measures already in place to detect symptomatic arriving travelers, can slow and reduce the spread of disease into the United States.
How Public Health Entry Screening Works
·Travelers who were in DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan in the 21days before arriving to the United States will be escorted to an area of the airport set aside for screening.
·Travelers will respond to a brief questionnaire that asks about their travel history and symptoms, and collects information so the travelers can be contacted, if needed.
·CDC staff will observe these travelers for signs of illness and take travelers’ temperatures using non-contact thermometers (thermometers that do not touch the skin).
·Travelers who do not have symptoms, but have been in DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan in the past 21 days will be given information on monitoring their health and actions to take if symptoms later appear. These travelers will continue to their final destinations. Traveler contact information will be shared with state and local health departments for additional follow-up and support.
·If a traveler has a fever or other symptoms, the traveler will be evaluated by a CDC public health officer.
o This evaluation includes a review of the traveler’s signs and symptoms and questions to assess the traveler’s risk of exposure to the disease.
o Sick travelers who are reasonably believed to be infected with or exposed to Ebola will be transferred to a hospital for further assessment. The hospital will isolate the sick person, provide medical care as needed, and work toward a diagnosis.
·CDC partners with state and local public health authorities and designated hospitals within those states to work quickly to identify and take appropriate public health actions for persons who present with symptoms of illness in the community. Working together, U.S. federal, state, and local authorities are ready to manage travelers who become ill after they reach their destinations.
·If a suspect case is identified, CDC will work with state/local health departments to conduct routine contact investigations to notify passengers.
CDC is prepared to provide additional resources in response to this Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda. The latest information on this outbreak is available here.
