In addition to the recently issued epidemiological alert for the presence of cholera cases in Haiti, the Dominican epidemiological surveillance system has its sights set on other mandatory notification diseases that have a permanent presence in the country, including dengue, malaria, leptospirosis and Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses.
Currently, dengue is the disease with mandatory notification that has the highest incidence in the country, whose cases exceed by 252% those registered last year, with more than 34 deaths and over six thousand cases this year, being the most affected 56% were under 20 years of age. Of cholera, to date, the country has not yet reported new cases.
Meanwhile, the risk of cases of leptospirosis and malaria increases after heavy rains and floods such as those produced weeks ago in the country by the passage of Hurricane Fiona. Meanwhile, despite the fact that Covid-19 is currently at low incidence levels, the virus is still circulating, as is influenza and other respiratory processes, predominantly syncytial virus.
Until last September 10, the national records of the bulletin of the epidemiological week number 36, show the report of 17 deaths and 124 notified cases of leptospirosis.
Among the most common clinical features are fever, headache, muscle pain, especially calf pain, and jaundice. Dengue symptoms appear 3 to 14 days, with an average of 4 to 7 days, after the bite of the transmitting mosquito and manifest with high fever that may be accompanied by headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, or rash.
The different municipalities of Greater Santo Domingo, San Francisco de Macorís, Santiago, Moca, San Cristóbal are the ones that contributed the greatest number of cases in the last record reported by the country in its epidemiological bulletin number 36 and the accumulated incidence of the disease is 70.62 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Malaria.
Until last September, the country had captured 258 cases of malaria, 45% more than the year before that same date.
Symptoms of this illness may include fever, vomiting, and/or headache.
Covid.
Yesterday bulletin 935 reported only 48 new cases of Covid-19 captured in 2,376 processed samples; 297 active cases and 15 hospitalized patients.
