Dengue cases almost quadruple in the Dominican Republic; 11 deaths

According to data from the General Directorate of Epidemiology, the number of people affected by dengue has almost quadrupled. The system reports 2,190 cases of infected people.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito transmits dengue. Last year on the same date, week 23, 638 cases of people affected by the viral disease were registered.

In the last four weeks, from 20 to 23, 567 cases have been reported, for a total of 2,190, including 11 deaths that the Clinical Audit Committee has not yet audited.

15 people have died from dengue fever this year

Santo Domingo, DR.
Covering water stored for domestic consumption and cleaning the surroundings of houses to avoid breeding sites of the transmitting mosquito continue to be the recommendations made by authorities and specialists to the population to avoid dengue fever.

This disease, endemic in the country and whose first warning sign is sudden onset high fever, has maintained high levels of incidence this year, causing to date the registration of 15 deaths and 3,185 suspected and confirmed cases, equivalent to 299% more than those reported in the same period last year.

Of the 230 cases reported during the last epidemiological week, 57% correspond to the municipalities of Santiago, Hato Mayor del Rey, Santo Domingo Norte, San Cristobal, Santo Domingo Este, La Vega, Moca and Santo Domingo de Guzman.

20 die from dengue fever and 25 are hospitalized in two hospitals

Santo Domingo, DR
Cases of dengue fever and deaths continue to increase in the country, reaching 20 deaths due to the disease in the first eight months of this year, and 3,837 people have been affected, primarily minors.

Meanwhile, pediatric hospitals continue to register admissions of children affected by the disease, whose initial symptoms are sudden fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, and general malaise, signs that can evolve to seriousness if not treated promptly.

Only two pediatric hospitals in Santo Domingo yesterday had 25 patients hospitalized for this cause.

The Hugo Mendoza Pediatric Hospital had 18 patients admitted yesterday affected by dengue fever and maintains an average admission rate of about seven children per day, informed its director, Dr. Dhamelisse Then.

Meanwhile, seven patients were hospitalized at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital, all of them stable, which, according to its director, infectious disease specialist Clemente Terrero, had been reduced in relation to previous days, when he reported 14 patients admitted.

288% more

The epidemiological report corresponding to week 31, which records notifications up to August 6, shows an increase in suspected and confirmed virus cases that reached 288% in relation to last year in the same period when 11 deaths and 981 infected patients were reported.

25 children hospitalized due to dengue
September 21, 2022 | 11:18 am

The accumulation of rains left by Hurricane Fiona that hit the country this Monday could unleash a greater increase in infections and demand for hospitalization for dengue, than currently exists, so it is necessary that both the authorities and the families intensify the vigilance and prevention of breeding sites for the transmitting mosquito, warn specialists.

Yesterday at least 25 children with the disease were hospitalized at the Hugo Mendoza and Robert Reid Cabral pediatric hospitals. The president of the Dominican Society of Infectious Diseases, Clevy Pérez, warns that these figures could increase in the next few days as a result of the rains left by Hurricane Fiona.

To date, the country reports over 27 deaths from dengue, mostly in children under 15 years of age, and over 4,000 cases of dengue, as well as more than 11 deaths and over 90 cases of leptospirosis...

Cases of dengue rise to 5,660 and those of monkeypox to 25
Authorities report that a period of at least 14 days must be expected to determine epidemiological effects after the passage of Fiona

In the last four weeks, 40 cases of leptospirosis have been reported in the country

Santo Domingo - Sep. 28, 2022 | 01:00 PM m.

The general director of Epidemiology, Ronald Skewes, reported this Wednesday that so far this year, dengue cases have risen to 5,660 and associated deaths to 33.

During the weekly meeting with the press, the doctor specified that "we are still in an alert situation", that is, above the green security zone, but without reaching the outbreak area.

Skewes explained that the spread of dengue is not automatic when receiving a mosquito bite, but rather requires an incubation period that can last between 14 and 30 days.

When the insect bites an infected person, "it has to go through a process until it reaches the salivary glands of the mosquito and can inoculate the virus," he explained. This process alone can take up to 18 days.

The epidemiologist called on the entire population to eliminate the breeding sites, since in this way there will be a drop in population density and it will take the mosquitoes about two weeks to repopulate the adults, distancing the start of the cycle.

"It's two to three weeks after an atmospheric effect when we can be witnessing increases in dengue," he clarified when asked about the consequences of Hurricane Fiona, especially in the eastern provinces.
"Now is the right time for interventions. Where is the problem? In those tanks that stayed in the houses, which I protected because it was the water I need to live. That's where the larvae and pupae are"Ronald SkewesGeneral Director of Epidemiology“

Skewes was reiterative in the importance of fumigating, eliminating junk and all kinds of mosquito breeding sites.

Likewise, he exhorted people to communicate with the provincial offices so that they are provided with abate, the larvicide that the Ministry of Public Health supplies, in order to "maintain the environment of the houses with the least amount of mosquitoes possible.

Dengue registers the highest incidence
Illness. It has caused 34 deaths, out of 6,000 cases this year and the most affected are under 20 years of age.

Santo Domingo, DR

In addition to the recently issued epidemiological alert for the presence of cholera cases in Haiti, the Dominican epidemiological surveillance system has its sights set on other mandatory notification diseases that have a permanent presence in the country, including dengue, malaria, leptospirosis and Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses.

Currently, dengue is the disease with mandatory notification that has the highest incidence in the country, whose cases exceed by 252% those registered last year, with more than 34 deaths and over six thousand cases this year, being the most affected 56% were under 20 years of age. Of cholera, to date, the country has not yet reported new cases.

Meanwhile, the risk of cases of leptospirosis and malaria increases after heavy rains and floods such as those produced weeks ago in the country by the passage of Hurricane Fiona. Meanwhile, despite the fact that Covid-19 is currently at low incidence levels, the virus is still circulating, as is influenza and other respiratory processes, predominantly syncytial virus.

Until last September 10, the national records of the bulletin of the epidemiological week number 36, show the report of 17 deaths and 124 notified cases of leptospirosis.

Among the most common clinical features are fever, headache, muscle pain, especially calf pain, and jaundice. Dengue symptoms appear 3 to 14 days, with an average of 4 to 7 days, after the bite of the transmitting mosquito and manifest with high fever that may be accompanied by headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, or rash.

The different municipalities of Greater Santo Domingo, San Francisco de Macorís, Santiago, Moca, San Cristóbal are the ones that contributed the greatest number of cases in the last record reported by the country in its epidemiological bulletin number 36 and the accumulated incidence of the disease is 70.62 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Malaria.

Until last September, the country had captured 258 cases of malaria, 45% more than the year before that same date.

Symptoms of this illness may include fever, vomiting, and/or headache.

Covid.

Yesterday bulletin 935 reported only 48 new cases of Covid-19 captured in 2,376 processed samples; 297 active cases and 15 hospitalized patients.
