Discussion thread VI - COVID-19 (new coronavirus)

As we have said here many times "do not wait for a vaccine". It is normal vaccine development to have successes and failures along the way. There are several other candidates and we will see what happens.

FluTrackers is neither "pro-vaccine" or "anti-vaccine". In a perfect world a cheap, already available, generic drug or traditional medicine would be a great treatment for COVID-19. Also in this perfect world a free, 100% safe vaccine would be widely available.

Again, our vaccine policy is "contact your medical provider". Someone who knows you and your medical history is in the best position to offer you pertinent advice.

However, I suspect that as it is a generic and not licensed or produced in some countries e.g. the UK for any indication that this may get overlooked as it will be of little interest to the mainstream Pharma sector.

There needs to be some high quality trials undertaken very rapidly to take a proper look at this compound, but I am not able to determine if there are any of a suitable design, size or quality underway. What do we think? We do still need compounds that will fill the gap around vaccines (limitations in production capacity and roll outs), especially if (as per gsgs' post above) we get a rapid vaccine escape.

Vaccine effectiveness against transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Data are limited to assess the effect of the vaccine against transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from individuals who are infected despite vaccination.

Demonstrated high efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 may translate to overall prevention of transmission in populations with high enough vaccine uptake, though it is possible that if efficacy against asymptomatic infection were lower than efficacy against symptomatic infection, asymptomatic cases in combination with reduced mask-wearing and social distancing could result in significant continued transmission.

Additional evaluations including data from clinical trials and from vaccine use post-authorization will be needed to assess the effect of the vaccine in preventing virus shedding and transmission, in particular in individuals with asymptomatic infection.

Interpretation


Pigs and chickens could not be infected intranasally by SARS-CoV-2, whereas fruit bats showed characteristics of a reservoir host. Virus replication in ferrets resembled a subclinical human infection with efficient spread. Ferrets might serve as a useful model for further studies—eg, testing vaccines or antivirals.

The possible genetics of certain animal lines would have to be published before they can be cited.

In other words, if we eliminate the possibilities of cell lines, the possibilities of animal lines seem to me to have to be published before any scientific publication is accepted.

so, where is this going ?
We are getting 0.1% of the population dying and >1% with
long-covid per year, even with strong measures.
Bergamo has 0.6%, that may be the maximim, they have a milder wave now
with only 0.05% dying.
But 0.3% and 5% may be the average , even if the vaccines work well and
immunity lasts long.
After that maybe 0.02% of the population dying per year, 70000 in USA.
Until we find some good antivirals.
Is that realistic ? Who saw other estimates?

Dr Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said he was worried about what this information could mean for the millions of Americans who suffer from severe allergies.

“We don't know the details of those two cases. We don’t know specifically what it was they were allergic to, or what their history with severe allergies was,” Dr Offit said, who is a voting member of the committee.

“There are tens of millions of people in this country who carry EpiPens with them — because they have peanut allergies, because they have egg allergies — who are going to believe now that they can't get this vaccine,” Dr Offit said. “That's a lot of people.”

“This issues is not going to die until we have better data," he added, imploring Pfizer to launch another clinical trial specifically for Americans with severe allergies.
