I would love to take a "magic pill" and have all of this pandemic situation behind me. If my entire household could take a real life proven safe and effective pill or vaccine, I would take it today.

Until then - I will continue to life a restricted life. I do not go out except to drive around and visit a couple of people in driveways. I always wear a mask (even outside) around others as I do not want to contribute to any burden on the health care system.

So today I signed up for a Moderna shot. I had no choice. A household member has jury duty in two weeks that they have not been able to be excused from. I am high risk for COVID-19 and Florida is continuing to be a national hot spot for variants. link I believe the UK variant is more contagious and more deadly than "regular" COVID-19. On top of this, no one expected the Spring Break surge hitting Florida right now. In my opinion this is a huge spreader event. And I am in the middle of it. link

I think in a pandemic you have to be constantly re-evaluating your personal situation. Things change. While my plan was to wait until June, I assess that my risk has exponentially increased with the jury duty requirement for a person in my household. They are still going to try to re-schedule still, but since they already re-scheduled once, those prospects look dim. The county states that these jury assignments are only for one day. How can that be? I am highly doubtful that jurors can be guaranteed a limit of a one day trial. What kind of justice is that? I suspect they say this so people will show up at all. We discussed getting a hotel room for the family member but they are also high risk and not vaccinated at this time. A hotel will only increase their risk further with the lobby, central halls, elevators, food, so they will have to come home each night if they are selected for duty.

Anyway, this jury thing pushed me over the edge.

I am neither pro-vaccine or anti-vaccine. I think my long history of posts on this site demonstrates this. Some years I get the flu shot, some years not. I vaccinated my children when they were small because we always lived in a large, dense metro area, but I was not a parent who rushed to the doctor for every sniffle. I appreciate modern medicine but I also think that natural medicines are very important to incorporate into our lives.

I also had been summoned for jury duty. Since I did not feel safe, I contacted my physician regarding my concerns. My physician submitted a letter to the courts stating why I was not available to serve at this time: not vaccinated, high risk due to rising rates of Covid-19 pandemic, etc.
I was excused from duty.
Same occurred with my son.in.law who also was excused from duty after his physician wrote a letter to the courts. His household members were at high risk due to comorbidities.

We are calling them again tomorrow since that will be inside the 10 business day window. They make it as difficult as possible as there is a special form required. There are no work excuses unless you are taking care of small children or disabled people. I have been called for jury duty in that courthouse. It is a high rise building with elevators, corridors, shared air flow system, small court rooms. But do not worry...they take everyone's temperature! omg....
 
From the medical form...."The undersigned states in good faith that the Juror has a medical condition that prevents the Juror from serving on a jury at this time. This medical condition prevents the Juror from serving due to mental illness, intellectual disability, senility, or other physical or mental incapacity."
 
My family member called today instead of tomorrow (because I am nagging them incessantly - lol) and finally got a real person. They explained that a 6 month deferral was already given and only a judge can grant another deferral of any kind, so that is that.
 
Someone asked me I am getting the Moderna shot. It is because that is what Publix offers. No special reason. I could have waited until Wednesday to sign up for J&J but Moderna has been distributed for a longer period of time.
 
I've heard of people being found too potentially biased to serve on a jury - knowledge of the system due to relatives in law enforcement, etc, or a close friend or relative who has been or is in prison may disqualify you.
Or if like George Carlin you tell the court that you can spot guilty people by 'just looking at them', they will probably not call you up. (Of course, you have to be telling the truth when you say that.)

Seriously, I am sorry you are both caught in this situation.
 
Reluctantly my family member located a vaccine shot late yesterday and will drive four hours, round trip, to receive it. They do not know which vaccine they will receive. This person has an autoimmune disease, is 20% disabled, over 60, and has another co-morbidity that is "severe" - but is not incapacitated where they can not sit in a chair and listen to testimony. We really have no choice at this point. This person can not be in a room with a lot of people for eight hours and be herded into elevators and through corridors. We believe that COVID-19 is partially airborne despite official declarations that it is "droplet". A surgical mask is ineffective inside against airborne. And if this person is chosen to serve, it could be three or more days of service, including a problematic lunch break. It is an impossible situation. I am going to still show up at my appointment. I feel society around me is not giving me the opportunity for the safety that I need so I am being forced to accelerate my vaccine decision. If I can live to 70 I would consider this a big win at life. My horizon is only 5 years so I am more concerned with short term health situations then the potential negative long term effects of an experimental vaccine technique. We will still live a "stuck at home" type life style because there is another member of the household who is not eligible for any vaccine and I think the evidence is not solid whether a vaccinated person can shed virus. Also, I am not sure about the 90% effectiveness rates. So...that is about it. Pandemic life.

The courts sound desperate or callous, (sometimes those are synonymous). I'm hoping the mRNA vaccines might have less dangers of long term issues than older technologies. If no external cell cultures are being used, they seem cleaner to me.
 
I just received a very nice message about my family member's autoimmune disease and obtaining a doctor's note to be excused from jury duty. I am fairly sure we could get a note (although my family member is not totally incapacitated). This family member has two specialists that they see for this condition. The issue, we discovered this week, is that only a judge can authorize an additional 6 month deferral. We are not sure what the procedure is to do this. My family member gave up and is going to get their first vaccine shot this Saturday. That will be exactly 10 days to the report date. We do not think a vaccine is any kind of "cure". It most certainly is not. While we might get sick, our hope is that it is enough to keep us from dying. I do not think we can avoid COVID-19 forever. So.....groan. I do not know the status of a nasal vaccine in the US. I have no idea what the China government is doing in this regard.
 
The data show that 14 days is quite a sharp cutoff point in there is little or no protection up to that time after which the protection ramps up fairly quickly. Given the enormous number of people who have now been vaccinated, and the absence of any detectable problems against the background despite very careful follow up, I can not see any reason not to get vaccinated - assuming you have no prior history with other vaccines or anaphylaxis. No vaccine is 100% without risk but given the known risks of a COVID infection the benefits clearly vastly outweigh the risks in the middle of a pandemic.
 
My family member's autoimmune disease problem is that it is too active. Maybe they will have a quicker response than 14 days. They have only been eligible to get a shot for two weeks. Most states took almost three months to drop the age eligibility below 65. So far I am not having any adverse reaction. I had a sore spot at the injection site for a day. The shot itself was nothing.

Oxford University is reportedly ready to begin testing a nasal spray version of the Covid-19 vaccine it developed with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, according to documents seen by the Financial Times, which could help bring about a more accessible, needle-free version of the vaccine that is still held up as a leading hope for most of the world despite being plagued by numerous reputation-damaging controversies in Europe and the U.S..

Oxford University has begun searching for participants in the early-stage trial, the Financial Times reportedThursday, which will take around four months to complete and could begin as early as next week.

The small trial, known as a Phase I trial, will test the vaccine?s safety ahead of potentially much larger trials to test efficacy.
