Discussion thread VI - COVID-19 (new coronavirus)

Second serious neurological illness reported

AstraZeneca, Under Fire for Vaccine Safety, Releases Trial Blueprints

Experts are concerned that the company has not been more forthcoming about two participants who became seriously ill after getting its experimental vaccine.

This is the second TM case, though the third neuro case since there was an MS case the company claimed was pre-existent. (Hmmm...) This second TM case happened after the second dose. I remember after the first dose TM case, I saw some trial participants interviewed and there was fear, but one person said he trusted the process. These are young people getting ill.

we may end up going with Russian or Chinese vaccines, faster than warpspeed ,
extensively "tested" in real settings

CDC changes COVID-19 guidance, airborne is primary way the virus spreads, touching surfaces is NOT the main way.
#Ventilation is important, as it goes beyond 6 ft and remains suspended in the air. H/T @jljcolorado & @jmcrookston

I do want to stress that we still do not know everything about this coronavirus. The document does say that the virus can remain on surfaces and then it can spread via your hands to your mucus membranes and infect you:
  • Droplets can also land on surfaces and objects and be transferred by touch. A person may get COVID-19 by touching the surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. Spread from touching surfaces is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Also, China has reported the virus on frozen food packaging. They have taken this very seriously and require cleaning of the establishments and registration of persons who were in those establishments. While I think China is completely unreliable on their case and death counts, they have world class science experts.

Please see:

China - Another frozen seafood package tests positive for COVID-19 coronavirus: this time in Fuyu City, Songyuan City, Jilin Province - September 20, 2020

China - Persons who ate at a restaurant where COVID-19 was found on frozen shrimp packaging quarantined at home for "isolation control" - August 22, 2020

China - Guangzhou city to halt frozen seafood, meat imports on virus worry

Philippines bans chicken imports from Brazil on coronavirus scare

NYT has a link to the blueprint for the trial: https://s3.amazonaws.com/ctr-med-71...46f9-8c32-cece903592b9/D8110C00001_CSP-v2.pdf

I went through reports in the media and all 3 neuro cases were in female volunteers. (I'm including the MS case since the blueprint does say that "History of Guillain-Barr? syndrome or any other demyelinating condition" is an exclusion. So they would have to have retroactively diagnosed her and I'm not confident about that.

There are sex-linked differences in the effects of vaccination:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41577-020-0338-x

Don't forget the age factor in African countries. I think it was in a WHO call that I heard that something like 50% of the population was under the age of 18(might have been higher). So age may also be a factor on deaths, along with all the others mentioned.

Has anyone seen any data on why the change? I have been looking for contact tracing studies, etc. and can't seem to find anything coming up yet. I have seen the early on studies that covered aerosols, etc. but nothing new that would lead them to change their requirements over the weekend, or are they that far behind? I have seen several Drs. posting about it now since many set up their practices based on old guidelines and now they have to go back to the table to reset up offices to address this new statement.

This guidance has been retracted.

I guess we should keep an eye out in some of the other countries to see if a trend starts. It's tough to take things from twitter but there were stories that tried to line up with the cases presented. I hate when it is a time will tell case like this one.

I was very disappointed by the CDC retraction today of Friday's guidance on COVID-19 spread. This is not a game. This is the 2nd reversal by them in a week. The other reversal was on testing. link

There are big differences on how to protect yourself in a droplet vs. airborne situation. Which is it? Is COVID-19 spread by aerosol and droplet - or not.

Since it is imperative to get societies functioning again - isn't it important to know exactly how to prevent transmission? Is it just that there are still not enough N95s? Is that it? And speaking of N95s... Everyone who wants one should be able to get one. Where are they? Aren't we the "richest" nation in the world? How is it even possible that our health care workers do not have enough PPE?

I know many people do not think COVID-19 is a harsh illness. Ok. But for those who are at risk, they should be able to obtain the best PPE made. For free. Then the people who do not want to wear masks can do their own thing since the at risk people have the best available protection. How are we at September without a bazillion N95 masks?

Do not wait for a vaccine. I think Dr. Redfield of the CDC had it right about when regular people can get a shot at their local pharmacy. Summer/Fall of 2021. Best case scenario.

Where are the N95s?
