Discussion on Indonesia Outbreaks

Thank you Doctor Niman,

This raise some question for Indonesia. Does anybody know Relenza production capacity by GlaxoSmithKline??
My understanding is that it is small--which is why the Australian company that patented it is suing GSK. Additionally, it should be noted that Relenza is an inhalable drug and is only available to the lung tissue itself. Any infection that is in the blood or other organs would be virtually inaccessible by the drug at least at therapeutic levels, anyway.

I read a while ago that they were working to make an injectable or tablet variant, has anyone any further information on this as Relenza appeared to be less resistance prone - than Tamiflu - during in vitro trials. The ion channel blockers are significantly more prone to resistance but I personally would like to see them stockpiled with Tamiflu for use in combination therapy as I think this will help to slow down the emergence of a Tamiflu resistant strain.

Shannon, Post #19 - Thanks you for my first smile of the day.

"I do not like putting on a foil hat. It clashes with my hair".

I agree 100% with everything you've said.

Thank you; this was the first time I had seen the Tin Foil Hat Study; hilariously entertaining, Al!

Re: Discussion on Indonesia Outbreaks

Here?s a bit of analysis on my part. I am a firm believer of ?watch what they do?..not what they say?.

Today is 10/20. There seems to be two trouble spots. South Sulawesi and North Sumatra. Let?s go back 10 days to 10/10. We have had 4 patients in South Sulawesi. Of these 4, 2 have been under 6 months old. In North Sumatra, we have had 5 patients in the last 10 days. Out of the 5 patients, 3 of them have been 3 years old and under. So between South Sulawesi and North Sumatra, we have had 5 children under the age of 3 years old in the past 10 days.

Now, here are some clips from todays newspapers (posted at the wiki):

?Since Fajrin, the baby suspect bird flu died, last Sunday October 15, the official of the Health and the Livestock Breeding Service of the Service, Marine, and fisheries (PKP) appearance increased preparedness.?

?JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia, the country with the highest number of bird flu deaths in the world, intends to bar city residents from keeping chickens and other poultry in their backyards, ministers said on Friday?.

?The government will do re-industrialisation the poultry followed the concern about the increase in the case of bird flu in Indonesia.? ?That was revealed by Coordinating Minister for People?s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie in being in a meeting of the Kesra Co-ordination about the handling of the case of bird flu in Jakarta, on Friday (20/10).?

?The Banda Lampung mayor Eddy Sutrisno, on Thursday (19?10), said if a chicken died suddenly, the citizen was asked immediately to report to the service/the related agency.?

?the Section Head the Health of the Banda Lampung City Dr. Reihana said his side has dropped the medical team off to check the citizen Umbul the Key and investigate the possibility spread him the bird flu virus.?

?totalling 13 Muslim scholars who were bundled into the Muslim Scholar?s Indonesian Council (MUI) South Sulawesi spread out the Ramadan Safari that was coordinated with with the socialisation of the prevention of bird flu to 13 mosques in the Sidrap Regency, on Thursday (19/10).?

Re: Discussion on Indonesia Outbreaks

South Sulawesi is a very conservative, very religiously active, isolated area.
The Moslem scholars, whoever they may be, know very little about bird flu. They are religious scholars. They're not doctors or nurses or public health nurses.

Sounds like they are working with the Government in spreading the word into 13 mosques. They wouldn't be doing that unless it was of utmost importance.

Re: Discussion on Indonesia Outbreaks

Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population estimated at 182,570,000. I believe there are 10,000s of mosques.
