I'll bet the thousand that it will be fun there, but it won't accomplish a hill of beans. I hope I'm wrong, but this site has told the world, and thus, them, many times what to do and what to think. Yet, they're holding a party to "look". Gimme a break.

And on that note, tell them that Tamiflu has a real probability of having randomly effective value. Many may die because of this.

And on that note, raise the fact that the game of school closings...NOT... is a societal benefit, rather than a personal benefit. Suggest that for those who can, they should seriously consider cloistering themselves.

Lastly, tell them about your plan when the fog of this viral war gets thick.

Just by being included. This means they are willing to listen.

It is not a large room. Last year the Secretary Leavitt was there for the entire session even though he had planned to stay only for the first part. Some his staff from HHS was there. The State Department sent an Ambassador. The Department of Homeland Security had 2 people present. Also in attendance were 2 people from the CDC. The Science Advisor to the President was there too.

They listened. I saw their eyes. They paid attention. Some took notes.

And it was not just FluTrackers. National Public Radio, WebMD, ABC News, Reuters, Flu Wiki, Avian Flu Diary, CIDRAP.....others....

This is the digital age and the stakes are high.

Give this new administration a chance. They are reaching out.

We can help them help us.

Internet is superior. Let the electrons travel, not the people.
Shall they post and discuss in internet.
(why don't HHS,flu.gov,CDC,WHO, have an attached forum, BTW. ?)
By accepting their minor form of communication (meetings)
you denigrate the internet-forum concept.

Once it was said that the newspapers can care everything, and by the new technologies objectively we switch the papers now to digits, so the same, and more, could be said for the Internet.

For that and other obvious reasons, the inner circles briefings and infos are shared eye to eye mainly.

Obviously they know very well what's going on, but if they asked for:

"a media interactive session to discuss our perspective on how the government can most efficiently and effectively disseminate information on the novel H1N1 influenza outbreak."

An high percentage of people don't surf the internet for an pandemic quoted "seasonal" at the field.
They absorb the pandemic quotes mainly from the TV daily news, main newspaper pages (on paper, and sites on the web).

The suggestion to the above reached "effectivelly" is to continue where they stop after the first weeks of march main TV flu gov media agressive coverages, but with all the health pertinent advices, and neccessary new social behaviours in a pandemic.

So, to activate daily main TV media information spots, banners, and news talks, about how various could be the symptoms and what it could like if worsen, how people must behave/prepare, and what/when will be done by the structures to prepare the society.

I have one suggestion of a topic to address.

Instead of discussing ways for the Gov't to be effective in dissemination of information, I suggest you also include a comment that will direct their attention to stopping the misinformation that will be disseminated.

We have witnessed dozens of people post here and elsewhere information about remedies, actions, non-actions, etc, that are either totally or mostly "wrong" information.

As soon as the Gov't posts anything, there will be many who will oppose whatever the Gov't says. (Do appreciate that I believe there are very good reasons to be very suspect of the Gov't's statements; many made about pandemic flu have been wanting...and this too is a problem, one of credibility, which is what Niko and Laidback Al have immediately identified as a serious issue).

There must be a way for the gov't to cause the public to independently vet the truth. The Gov't I suggest should direct traffic to the independent blogs, because many people won't trust the Gov't. fluwikie, here, AFDiary are legit. Even direct traffic to the UK Ministry of Health. There's a threshold of fact info that will tilt the doubters either to believe a truth or to stop shouting mis-statements of truth.

I think the real issue will be stopping the cacophany of false and dangerous information that will be flowing from everyone. There will be many vendors who will try to exploit this situation. There will be snake oil salepeople selling stuff. The Government must invest a major portion of its planning effort to announcing that there will be many differing opinions, but there are only very few scientific facts and known treatments.

That will save countless lives.

My $1000. Now, see if you can earn it. It will be a pleasure to pay this if this message can be effectively imparted and acted upon by the Government, whatever they are.

Recently, a Russian news team has been seeking sensationistic stories about the flu. So, heads up. It will be worldwide, and here, where stories that scare rather than stories that educate will be rampant, too. I believe that stopping this, heading it off by challenging it head on, by stating loudly and clearly the truth, by directing traffic to independent bloggers, like this one, will be effective for those who think and read.

One can hope that those who gather the info will pass it on virally to those who don't read, who don't look, who will then be in serious denial and will be profoundly stunned and experiencing cognitive dissonance.

Do appreciate that I am not keen on leaving the schools open if the mortality rate for those who are infected is as high as it appears it is in some localities around the globe. A 4% mortality rate is untenable. It is unconscionable to allow young people to congregate because the alternative would stress our economic system. The Govt effectively is sentencing a number of the kids to death.

I believe the Service Learning program, Learn and Serve America, should be enlisted to require immediately that every teacher in the classrooms which involve about 1 million students in the USA, be given a script or talking points and that they start talking immediately upon school start.

This will be one of the most effective ways of reaching the kids. Sure facebook and youtube and whatever else is out there will be of use, but this is a captive audience, and our taxpayer dollars are being spent to finance the teachers, in part.

That's 1 million kids who will be right in the center of the viral bullseye. That may interrupt some of the chains of infection. Teach them immediately. Teach them to care for others in their families. We're now talking about reaching not 1 million, but 10 million and they in turn can reach maybe 10 million more. That could possibly reach up to 10% of the population. It could be a rocket to major market penetration if Learn and Serve America planned its broadcast to the program directors and they in turn to the teachers in a way that compels the students to discuss this topic in each of their classrooms during a 1 or 2 week window. That would result in reaching those who are conscious. The rest won't matter anyhow as they're unreachable.

Her attendance doesn't denigrate the net forum concept;
it adds to it. It's because of the forum that she was invited.

I just hope they actually take the advice they're given.

mixin, once you accept it as "honour", you also somehow accept their "rules".
Which means members/employees may no longer openly say what they really think but
rather what they anticipate is good for their boss,job,career,copyright.
Those people sign self-censorship agreements about it.

You feel it in the interviews and papers and statements.
They don't talk freely, but are always worried : "may I say this" ?
So they better formulate it ambiguously,unclearly such that they
can later say it weren't meant that way.

On the other hand, internet posters are full of ideas and discussion
and critizism - you just feel it. They rather say too much than too little
so you have to pick, need summaries.

Do we want to become like a government agency, being nice
but with less constructive discussion and ideas less search for truth,
but rather connections,corruption, with banning/censoring
of people who differ ?
When you sit at their table, join their meetings, feeling honored, you promote their rules.
You can cooperate without accepting their methods.

Tele-meetings with discussion are clearly superior , so why don't they do it ?
Reduction of control and censorship-opportunities.

Congratulations to Sharon and all of FT, especially the dedicated, hard-working folks that tirelessly gather, translate and post bits of news from everywhere.

This news lifted my spririts, as I see it as a genuine sign of hope that the concerns, opinions and advice of the general public is respected and sought.

From where I am, it seems that most of the public is still blissfully unconcerned and unprepared for anything out of the ordinary.
The invitation is both an honor and an opportunity.

If I were ever invited to a media session in D.C., it would be pull-my-finger gags for all the media reps during the meet and greet!

But seriously, it would neat if FT was spotlighted on Larry King or The View to stress the role Web 2.0 (user contributed/generated content) in gathering, organizing, and disseminating health information and serving as a tool for public health.

Congratulations on your recognition as being a sane voice in a time of peril. :tiphat:

Just some thoughts...it's true that the GOV staff may toe the party line for career...all the more reason for FL1 to GO...and even though accepting the invite means implicitily accepting the rules of the engagement....I think FL1 is saavy enough to turn any moment to her advantage and get the truth onto the table. :cool: Once it's there, it will be hard for others to sweep it back under rug.

One point I suggest...use the CDC Director's Updates as a launching point for discussion. They seem to be fairly close to reality and their plans lean toward the direction we are trying to lead folks. GOV can't accuse us of extremeism or panic-mentality when we are basing our recommendations on GOV planning and assessment. We just have a higher trust in human nature and strongly feel people deserve all info available to make their own educated (or uneducated) decision in times of crisis.

All in all I have to applaud :applause: our leaders and contributors for their foresight, dedication and commitment to the well-being of the unsuspecting public. That is the very essence of public health.

Sharon, after reading this mornings posts I have something else I wish you would bring up. Evidently, there are many GP's who do not have the time to go over the latest bulletins regarding the probable outcome of SF. When mothers take their children in for a check-up and ask what they should be doing for SF and get a 'duh' answer, it is time for another approach. There has been too much down play to the pandemic resulting in general ignorance even among doctors. If not informing the public isn't bad enough, uninformed medical professionals is downright criminal.

The CDC has a special section on its website for Health Professionals. There is an RSS feed and also the option to sign up for email alerts. There are reference sections for different kinds of flu and a link to Plan and Prepare.

If doctors are not using this service, then......

Just like to add my congratulations with the others and insert a bit of advice.

Beware the politicians and their speakers.

They can pull you right along with flattery and next thing you know, they have you flumoxxed by their world view of what cannot really be done.

Just spent 4 days in April visiting legislators in DC on emergency medicine issues.

Perhaps sticking to the very real, serious issues that are not being discussed is a good place to hold your ground.

I speak of the millions of school children being put at risk rather than addressing properly alternative, less contagious inducing learning environments. The mistake being made is to assume that all learning is either at home or in crowded class rooms. We have lots of other forums to use which permit distancing of at least the 6 feet needed to limit droplet transmission.

It will likely take until the numbers of publicized pediatric deaths reach 50 or more but soon about therein, the news media will turn on the government. But too late for many.

We have CREATED an artificial second wave with an intensity of contagious potential like none ever contemplated by sane people.

Thank you for your taking the time to listen to my railings. May God speed your mission.
