21 new cases of swine flu in Delhi, 1 dies at Safdarjung hospital

Twenty one new cases of swine flu were today reported in the national capital, taking the total number of people affected by the virus to 3,438 so far this year while the toll still stands at 10.

The deadly disease today claimed the life of Jitendra Raghvanshi, a theatre personality and former HoD of foreign languages department of Agra University at Safdarjung hospital.

"His death, however, will not be counted in Delhi's figure for deaths due to the disease," Health department officials said.

"As he hails from Agra, his death will not be counted in the death figure for Delhi despite he succumbing to H1N1 influenza virus at a hospital here," said Charan Singh, Additional Director in-charge of Public Health, Health department.

[h=1]Swine flu kills senior doctor, kin demand compensation[/h] The directorate of health services (DHS) has denied that a senior government hospital doctor had died of swine flu (H1N1) at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 3 even as the patient?s samples tested positive for the viral influenza.
The family of the deceased doctor, Dinesh Kumar Singh, has demanded compensation from the Delhi government for the expenses incurred by them for his treatment, which they claim was `20 lakh.
The Delhi unit of BJP has thrown its weight behind the doctor?s family with party president Satish Upadhyay demanding that the Delhi government compensate for all medical expenses incurred by Singh?s family along with an additional `1 crore as interim compensation.
According to a BJP spokesperson, Upadhyay will meet Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on March 12 and take up this issue with him.
Dr Dinesh Kumar Singh, 34, a senior resident (anesthesia) at Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on February 8. He tested positive for H1N1 influenza at Dr Lal Path Labs, the report of which came on February 9.

Another pregnant woman has died of swine flu in the capital, taking the toll due to the deadly virus in Delhi to 11. The 18-year-old is the second pregnant woman to have died due to swine flu in the city with the other death reported in February. Also, 79 fresh cases of swine flu were reported on Thursday as the total number of cases mounted to 3,806 this year.

Another woman who was admitted at Baba Saheb Ambedkar (BSA) hospital in Rohini soon after delivering her baby at a private hospital became the 12th victim of swine flu in the city. Over 4,000 people have tested positive for the virus since January 1 this year.
Health department authorities said the woman was admitted for a caesarian section at a private hospital in Shalimar Bagh in the first week of March, in the last stage of her pregnancy, when she went into foetal distress. ?Her the baby was saved but the mother was diagnosed with H1N1. Treatment was started but since it was a complicated case due to the pregnancy and she also had diabetes, she was shifted to the nearby BSA hospital, which is the largest government hospital in the area and one of the designated 22 hospitals for H1N1 treatment,? a Health department official said.

NOIDA: The first case of swine flu this season was reported on Thursday from a city hospital, a 64-year-old woman from Delhi who was admitted in Fortis hospital last week after she tested positive for H1N1.

District malaria officer Phool Singh said. "She was admitted in Fortis Hospital, Sector 62 and tested positive for H1N1, according to the hospital authorities." A spokesperson for Fortis said the patient was discharged on Thursday.

The district health department had sent 453 samples of suspected swine flu patients to the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi between January 6 and March 31 this year. It received reports for only 421 patients, of whom 112 tested positive for swine flu.

Swine flu is contagious, and it spreads in the same way as the seasonal flu.

High risk groups to be provided free swine flu vaccine

NEW DELHI: With the scare of swine flu looming over the city, Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain today directed health authorities to make preparations for free and mandatory vaccination of health care providers and high risk groups for prevention of H1N1 Influenza virus.

"The minister directed that doctors, nurses, other paramedics in both government and private hospitals, and high risk groups like children, senior citizens, pregnant women, will be provided free vaccination in hospitals for effective prevention," said a senior Delhi government official.

NEW DELHI: A 59-year-old man undergoing treatment for swine-flu at Safdarjung Hospital here has died, in what is believed to be the first death from H1N1 influenza in the national capital this season.

The deceased hailing from Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital in critical condition on Tuesday and died the same night, hospital authorities said, reporting the casualty on Friday.

"The patient's condition was critical and was admitted in the ICU of the hospital. He tested positive for swine flu and was referred to Safdarjung hospital from Apollo hospital," the medical superintendent of Safdarjung hospital, Dr A K Rai, said.

The national capital has reported the second death due to swine flu this year with a 60-year-old woman succumbing to the H1N1 virus at a hospital while undergoing treatment.

The woman, hailing from Faridabad, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Safdarjung Hospital on October 2.

"Her condition was critical and she was on ventilator since October 2. She tested positive for swine flu and was referred to our hospital from Fortis Escorts Hospital in Faridabad. She died last night," said Safdarjung medical superintendent Dr A K Rai.

Also, two men, aged 68 and 32 years and natives of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, were admitted to the ICU of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where they are undergoing treatment since October 2.

The number of swine flu patients in the Capital is on the rise and so doctors and support staff fear getting infected with the disease due to lack of vaccines.
The Delhi government had purchased the vaccines nearly two weeks ago but despite instructions from the health ministry, the same could not be made available to doctors.
As per norms, doctors and medical staff are given the vaccine for swine flu in advance as they are the most vulnerable lot because of their interaction with patients infected by the H1N1 virus. Last year, a large number of resident doctors were infected due to the lack of vaccines while affecting health services across hospitals.

Delhi: 59-year-old man dies of swine flu, becomes season's first victim in capital


A 59-year-old man, who was undergoing treatment for swine flu treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, died on Tuesday, 6 October. Though he is reportedly the first swine flu victim in Delhi this season, the Delhi government is yet to confirm it. The man, a resident of Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Safdarjung Hospital in Tuesday. Hospital authorities on Friday, 9 October said that the man was suffering from a critical condition and died on Tuesday itself, PTI reported.

"He tested positive for swine flu and was referred to Safdarjung hospital from Apollo hospital," Dr AK Rai, the medical superintendent of the hospital, said.

Surge in swine flu cases in Capital

A new threat has been lurking around periphery of a choked and gasping Delhi since early October.

In fact, the city hospitals have now alerted the Central Government about the rise in the number of swine flu cases that have started coming in.

The city reported 15 swine flu cases and one death between October and November this year.

Last year, the swine flu cases (10,000 reported) spiked during December, with the number climbing till February.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here currently has two women ? aged 55 and 39 ? who have tested positive for swine flu and are under treatment for multi-organ failure.
